T o e m p h a s i z e the role of the scho o l in the n u r tu re of v a l u e s in its s t u d e n t s is not mea nt to deny the r e s p o n ­s ib i l i ty of the fa m i l y and o t he r i n s t i tu t i o n s s u ch as the c h u r c h for w o r k i n g t o w a r d s re a l iz a t i on of the s a m e aim. Nor is it mea nt to m i n im iz e the i m p o r t a n c e of re s p e c t in g d i f f e r e n c e s in i nd i v i d ua l be l i e f s . For the p re v i ou s tw o s pr in g te rm s , I had been co n d u c t i n g a s ma l l c l a s s on “W o m e n in H i s to ry . " In the fal l o f ’77 1 d ec ided that the top ic had lost s om e o f i ts ap pe a l for s t u d e n t s and I b ega n to cas t about for s o m e t h i n g to rep la c e it. A n e x a m i n a t i o n of four Un i te d S t a t e s P r e s i d e n t s and c r u c i a l d e c i s io n s in the f ield of foreign a f f a i r s m a d e dur ing the ir re s p e c t iv e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n s i n te re s te d me and I b e g a n to l ay out the rough out l in es for the s e m in a r . But then I began to re con s i der ; c e r ta i n ly the re wo uld h a v e bee n s tud en t in te re s t in the pro po se d top ic and there w a s good r e a s o n to o f fe r it pu re ly on c ont ent . It o c c u r r e d to me, h o w e ve r , that the p o s s i b i l i t y of o f fe r in g s o m e th i n g ou ts i de the f ield of h i s to r y mig ht be s a l u t a r y s in ce most o f my t e a ch i n g and re ad ing fall w i th i n that field.

T h i s b a c k g r o u n d , of cours e , w a s most helpful . Huey Jacobus , Karen B a ic k e r and J im Je f fe r s had not done any p a i n t i n g b e fo re but w e r e e a g er to l earn . We met to g e t he r once a w e e k for three ho u rs and w o rk e d on l o c a t i o n e x ce p t w h e n w e a t h e r c l os ed in and then we re pa i r ed to the C o l r o s s l iv ing room. S i n c e the c a m p u s , p a r t i c u l a r l y the g r o u n d s s u r r o u n d i n g the M c C l u r e ’s f a rm and the po nds , o f fe r su c h a v a r i e t y of s i t e s , the g r e a t e r part of our l oc a t i on pa in t i ng w a s at our doo rs te p , and we did not ha v e to ra nge too far f ro m base . We took t ime e a c h we e k to d i s c u s s e v e r y o n e ’s w o r k and the p r o b l e m s of a p a r t i c u l a r pa i n t ing . E a c h w a s ab le to l earn f rom fe l lo w m e m b e r s and this proved to be very v a lu a b le . At the c o n c l u s i o n of the s e m in a r , m a ts w e r e cut by the s tu d e n ts in p r e p a r a t io n for f r a m in g one of the ir pa i n t i n g s . T h e s e m i n a r w a s s u c c e s s f u l and the group w a s ver y a m i a b l e and g oo d- na tu re d .

I l ea rn ed th in gs from thi s f i rst g roup w h i c h e n a b l ed me to m a k e thi s pas t y e a r ’s s e m i n a r mo re e f fe c t i ve . F o r e x a m p le , the group met tw ic e a w e e k ra th er than once a nd the a d d i t io na l t ime to ge th e r pr o ve d use fu l . A ls o , I s w i t c h e d to w a t e r c o l o r b lo c k s ra th e r th an s i n ­

M a n y l i t t le th in gs of a t e c h n i c a l n a tu re w e re i m p r o v e d upon, and I look for a s i m i l a r l ea rn ing e x p e r i e n c e in the future, w h i c h wi l l e n a b l e the more e f f e c t i v e m a n a g e m e n t o f a pa i n t i n g group. A s the d oc to r told the old s to r y abo ut s m a s h i n g a mule ov er the head w i t h a s t i ck to get its a t t e n t io n , I w a s s t r u c k jus t abo ut as hard and s u d ­den ly by the n o n - a c a d e m i c , or in te r re la t ed , na tu re of w h a t I w a s hear ing . I r e m e m b e r e d that at l eas t three of our l ast y e a r ’s i m p o r ta n t d ia g n o s e s had com e f rom the In d u s t r i a l A r t s and P h y s i c a l E d u c a t i o n te a ch e rs . T h o s e three s t u d e n t s c o u ld n ’t l earn h o w to spel l , or do p r e - A lg e b r a , or s o m e th i n g , and all of us lo fty a c a ­dem ic t e a c h e r s c o u l d n ’t t e ach the m how , nor cou ld we f igure out w h y . A f ield h o c k e y co a ch o b s e r v e d that one kid jus t c o u l d n ’t s e e m to fit into p a t t e r n ed play. A d ra f t i ng t e a c h e r d i s c o v e r e d tha t a n o t h e r s tude nt a b ­so lu te ly cou ld not fo l l ow s e q u e n c e d s p o k e n d i r e c ­t ions . In our ne x t m ee t in g to d i s c u s s s tu d e n ts , tho se o b s e r v a t i o n s “to o k .” T h e m a th t e a c h e r said, “S a m e in my c l a s s ! ” T h e F r e n c h t e a c h e r had a s i m i l a r re ac t ion . T h e l a ng ua g e s k i l l s ( read l ea rn in g d i s a b i l i t y ) t e a c h e r got to m u s in g a loud and the ps y ch o l og i s t said, “so u nd s f a m i l i a r ” and we had a b r e a k t h r o u g h . A n d we had s om e te s t ing , and s o m e s pe c ia l help , and s o m e y ou ng people be ga n to s uc ce e d w h e r e they had met f r u s t r a ­t ion be fore .

So w h a t ? S o P .D .S . s o m e t i m e s s e e m s too big, but the fac t tha t we are big en ou gh to ha v e three people in the I n d u s t r i a l A r t s D e p a r t m e n t s a v e s a b ou t tha t m a n y a c a d e m i c c a r e e r s a n n u a l l y . S o a k i d ’s f a i lure in s o c c e r and a k i d ’s f a i lu re in m a t h bo th ca n h a p p e n for the s a m e re a so n . S o a d e v e l o p m e n t a l o p t o m e t r i s t can t e ach a c o a c h s o m e of the s a m e t r i c k s sh e t e a c h e s an E n g l i s h t e a ch er . So jus t a f ew w e e k s ago w e d i s ­co v er ed tha t a k i d ’s s oc ia l p r o b l e m s and hi s long d iv i s io n t r o u b le s w e r e b a s i c a l l y the sa m e . Now , tha t d a y d r e a m d id n ’t r ea l l y ta k e too long. It h a p p e n s to h a v e cos t me abo ut a w e e k ’s c o n c e n t r a t io n . And, as we have m ov ed o f f the fa rm, the re are m o re s t r a i n s on the p r o c e s s o f s h a r i n g p a re n t i n g b e t w e e n the tw o p a re nt s . Like it or not, w i t h the b es t of i n te n t io ns , F a t h e r of ten ca n n o t be as v i s ib le or as invo lv ed , e i th er as an a c t i v e ly s u p p o r t i v e force , or as a mode l w h i c h is both u n d e r s t a n d a b l e and w i th i n r e a c h for the chi ld. If we see our ch i ld re n as e x t e n s i o n s of o u rs e l v e s , we wi l l e xp e c t them all to s h a p e up the s a m e w a y to m a k e us look s u c c e s s f u l , and we wi l l fail.
