T o e m p h a s i z e the role of the scho o l in the n u r tu re of v a l u e s in its s t u d e n t s is not mea nt to deny the r e s p o n ­s ib i l i ty of the fa m i l y and o t he r i n s t i tu t i o n s s u ch as the c h u r c h for w o r k i n g t o w a r d s re a l iz a t i on of the s a m e aim. Nor is it mea nt to m i n im iz e the i m p o r t a n c e of re s p e c t in g d i f f e r e n c e s in i nd i v i d ua l be l i e f s . A n e x a m i n a t i o n of four Un i te d S t a t e s P r e s i d e n t s and c r u c i a l d e c i s io n s in the f ield of foreign a f f a i r s m a d e dur ing the ir re s p e c t iv e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n s i n te re s te d me and I b e g a n to l ay out the rough out l in es for the s e m in a r . A s the d oc to r told the old s to r y abo ut s m a s h i n g a mule ov er the head w i t h a s t i ck to get its a t t e n t io n , I w a s s t r u c k jus t abo ut as hard and s u d ­den ly by the n o n - a c a d e m i c , or in te r re la t ed , na tu re of w h a t I w a s hear ing . I r e m e m b e r e d that at l eas t three of our l ast y e a r ’s i m p o r ta n t d ia g n o s e s had com e f rom the In d u s t r i a l A r t s and P h y s i c a l E d u c a t i o n te a ch e rs . T h o s e three s t u d e n t s c o u ld n ’t l earn h o w to spel l , or do p r e - A lg e b r a , or s o m e th i n g , and all of us lo fty a c a ­dem ic t e a c h e r s c o u l d n ’t t e ach the m how , nor cou ld we f igure out w h y . A f ield h o c k e y co a ch o b s e r v e d that one kid jus t c o u l d n ’t s e e m to fit into p a t t e r n ed play. A d ra f t i ng t e a c h e r d i s c o v e r e d tha t a n o t h e r s tude nt a b ­so lu te ly cou ld not fo l l ow s e q u e n c e d s p o k e n d i r e c ­t ions . A p h y s i c a l e d u c a t i o n te a c h e r no t i ced tha t a boy w h o could p lay s o c c e r we l l c o u l d n ’t ha nd le s imple , r y t h m i c e x e r c i s e s .

In our ne x t m ee t in g to d i s c u s s s tu d e n ts , tho se o b s e r v a t i o n s “to o k .” T h e m a th t e a c h e r said, “S a m e in my c l a s s ! ” T h e F r e n c h t e a c h e r had a s i m i l a r re ac t ion . T h e l a ng ua g e s k i l l s ( read l ea rn in g d i s a b i l i t y ) t e a c h e r got to m u s in g a loud and the ps y ch o l og i s t said, “so u nd s f a m i l i a r ” and we had a b r e a k t h r o u g h . A n d we had s om e te s t ing , and s o m e s pe c ia l help , and s o m e y ou ng people be ga n to s uc ce e d w h e r e they had met f r u s t r a ­t ion be fore .

So w h a t ? S o P .D .S . s o m e t i m e s s e e m s too big, but the fac t tha t we are big en ou gh to ha v e three people in the I n d u s t r i a l A r t s D e p a r t m e n t s a v e s a b ou t tha t m a n y a c a d e m i c c a r e e r s a n n u a l l y . S o a k i d ’s f a i lure in s o c c e r and a k i d ’s f a i lu re in m a t h bo th ca n h a p p e n for the s a m e re a so n . S o a d e v e l o p m e n t a l o p t o m e t r i s t can t e ach a c o a c h s o m e of the s a m e t r i c k s sh e t e a c h e s an E n g l i s h t e a ch er . So jus t a f ew w e e k s ago w e d i s ­co v er ed tha t a k i d ’s s oc ia l p r o b l e m s and hi s long d iv i s io n t r o u b le s w e r e b a s i c a l l y the sa m e . It s e e m s tha t thi s boy rea l ly , ho n es t l y , h a s a l m o s t no s e n s e of h i s r e la t io n s h ip in s p a c e to o t h er people and he a l w a y s s ta n d s a n n o y i n g l y c lo se to o t h er people , w h o rea c t in a r e j e c t in g fas h i on , w h i c h s e t s o f f more , s u b t l e r e a c ­t ions , w h i c h re s u l t s in d a m n l i t t le so c i a l c o n f id e n c e for thi s poor f e l low. G i v e n thi s s p a t i a l r e la t io n s h ip w e a k n e s s , is it c o i n c i d e n c e tha t hi s m a t h h o m e w o r k looks l ike a s p i de r w e b in a w i n d s t o r m ? No. S o s o m e ­t i m e s w e get luc ky , or are a w f u l l y s m a r t , and so lve one. But ho w m a n y o t her s do we m i s s a m o n t h ? H o w m a n y are m i s s e d n a t i o n a l ly a m o n t h ? H o w m a n y s m a r t “d u m b ” k ids are ru n n in g ar o u nd out there , f ru s t r a te d and u n ta p p e d ?

Now , tha t d a y d r e a m d id n ’t r ea l l y ta k e too long. It h a p p e n s to h a v e cos t me abo ut a w e e k ’s c o n c e n t r a t io n . T h e c o m b i n a t i o n o f my l i t t le , m e n ta l s o j o u r n and w h a t I l earn ed and w h a t I m i s s e d w h i le o f f on m y d a y d r e a m h a s left me fee l ing fut i le , f r u s t r a t e d , ab ou t h o w m u ch I d o n ’t k no w .
