Prince George County is centrally located in southeastern Virginia. This 266square mile county is bordered on the north by the James River and the westby the Appomattox River. The cities of Petersburg and Colonial Heightsconstitute the southwest border and Hopewell forms the northeast border.Prince George County is ideally situated on Interstates 95 and 295 andprovides ready access to all major East Coast and Sunbelt markets.
Prince George County is 25 miles southeast of Richmond and 130 miles southof Washington, D.C. The Port of Hampton Roads is 90 miles southeast.

Abundant medical facilities are available to Prince George County residentsthroughout the metropolitan area. Southside Regional Medical Center inPetersburg, a 311-bed acute care facility, offers extensive facilities andservices that include 24-hour emergency care; intensive and coronary care;physical rehabilitation; and a school of nursing. John Randolph Hospital inHopewell with 150 beds also offers a full range of services. The VirginiaCommonwealth University Medical Centeris located in the city of Richmond.This internationally known teaching and research hospital offers the latesttechnology, services and facilities. Numerous other medical facilities andservices are available throughout the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area.
The public health center provides extensive county-wide medical servicesincluding immunizations, obstetrics, well baby clinics, and home health care.John Randolph Hospital, in Hopewell, operates a 124-bed nursing homefacility. An additional 23 nursing care facilities are located throughout themetropolitan area.
There are over 2,000 physicians and 500 dentists who practice in theRichmond-Petersburg metropolitan area. In the immediate area of PrinceGeorge County, Hopewell and Petersburg, there are approximately 150physicians and 70 dentists.

Prince George County is a member of the Appomattox Regional LibrarySystem. This library system circulates over 119,000 volumes. Four branchesof this library are located in the county. Library facilities at the numerouscolleges and universities located in the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitanarea are also open to the public. These systems include the 64,105 volumelibrary at Richard Bland College; John Tyler Community College with a 75,472volume collection; and Virginia State University with 768,818 volumes.
Over 40 places of worship representing the leading Protestant denominations,the Catholic Church and Jewish synagogues are located in the county andHopewell.
The County provides recreational facilities in conjunction with public schoolsites and residential subdivisions, accessible from all parts of the County.All-season youth and adult sports, physical fitness programs, family trips &activities, special interest classes and youth support day camp programs areoffered by the PG Department of Recreation & Parks. Four parks in theCounty, Scott Memorial Park, Temple Recreation Park, Appomattox RiverRegional Park, and JEJ Moore Athletic Complex, are open to residents fromdawn to dusk.
Numerous shopping opportunities are available to area residents. A broad mixof commercial establishments are located in Prince George County at severalshopping centers. As part of the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area,county residents enjoy easy access to more than 75 shopping centers andmalls located throughout the region.

Prince George County and the metropolitan area offer a variety of historical,cultural and recreational opportunities. For the Civil War enthusiast there is thePetersburg National Battlefield Park, Pamplin Park, the Siege Museum, theMuseum of the Confederacy, the US Quartermaster Museum (Fort Lee) andthe US Army Women's Museum (Fort Lee) and the Richmond NationalBattlefield Park. Other historical sites in the area include six James RiverPlantations, homes of presidents and historical notables.
Cultural attractions in the area include the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, whichdisplays an extensive collection of world art; the Science Museum of Virginia,which features a computer center, Imax/Omnimax space theater andnumerous permanent and traveling exhibitions; and the Valentine Museum,where decorative arts and exhibitions on the social and political history of thearea are displayed. Other cultural activities include theatrical performances byten area production companies and scheduled national touring productions;musical performances by the Virginia Opera and the Petersburg andRichmond Symphonies; and performances by the Richmond Ballet and theConcert Ballet of Virginia.
Recreational opportunities are also plentiful in the Prince George County area.The James and Appomattox Rivers offer fishing, boating, and water skiingactivities. Several marinas are located on the Appomattox River. PocahontasState Park in nearby Chesterfield County offers hiking, ball fields, picnicfacilities, and three lakes for swimming, boating, and fishing.
