Goals and Management Objectives

Forest Management on Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) means different things to different people.

Provincial Forest lands are managed for a variety of reasons including timber and non- timber values,

wildlife enhancement, soil and water preservation, demonstration techniques, training and recreation

and aesthetics.

The primary goal for management of P.E.I. Public Forest Land is to enhance the overall forest

quality. To accomplish this, it may be necessary to remove some of the lower quality trees on the

property and nurture those of higher quality. This will in turn improve genetic quality, species

distribution and diversity through careful tree selection and natural regeneration. Allowing acceptable

growing stock the chance to thrive and provide a seed source for the surrounding areas will ensure that

quality natural regeneration occurs. Enhancement or enrichment planting may be necessary in areas

where there is inadequate or unsuitable natural regeneration. Trees native to P.E.I. are suitable to the

site conditions will be chosen for any required reforestation on the property. Prescribing treatments in

some stands while leaving others untreated will provide for a range of forest types. Converting stands

from a single species to multiple species is desirable. This can be accomplished by retaining some of the

natural regeneration in areas that have been previously planted and by planned tree selection in stand

improvement treatments. Planted and natural stands on the property will be assessed for health and

growth of desired species on an on-going basis. This information will be used to determine when and

where future treatments will be carried out. Through time, a favourable healthy mixture of short-lived

and long-lived species will provide for an abundance of quality forest products, biodiversity, wildlife, and

recreational opportunities as well as a range of ecological goods and services (such as clean air and

water).

Property Overview

Location

Property # 243485 is located on the Pleasant Valley Road, Route # 202, in the community of Iris,

P.E.I., Canada (Figure 1). The total area of this property is 40 hectares (ha) or 99 acres (ac). The

midpoint is Latitude 62°41.648 N, Longitude 46°01.075 W.

Past Information

Local records and previous aerial photography show that the property was largely forested land.

Much of the property has had little change in that water courses, topography and species composition

have remained reasonably constant. The surrounding areas have seen some change in that land that

was once farmland is now forested. To better illustrate this, 1974 aerial photography can be seen in

Appendix A.

During an on-ground assessment it was observed that stand 156193 has been recently cut. This

cut area was then planted with white spruce. This plantation will need to be monitored as it may need

maintenance in the near future.

Stand 1561020 was noted to have been planted with black spruce in 1986. Unfortunately the

planted black spruce trees did not thrive at this location and should not be considered the dominant

crop for this stand. The species composition for this stand is made up of grey birch, balsam fir, black

spruce, red maple and pin cherry.

A grassy field at the beginning of the property is used by locals to house honey and pollination

bees. These bees are kept here throughout the year and stored in bee crates during the winter months.

The field will be kept “bee friendly” for the locals in the area.

Property Information

The information in Appendix B has been taken from the 2000 Corporate Land Use Inventory

(CLUI); however an on-ground stand assessment will be completed prior to the commencement of any

silviculture or infrastructure treatment. This on-ground assessment information will be included in this

plan as an updated stand tally sheet and will supplement the extrapolated data when applicable

(Appendix C). A topographic map of the property shows the general terrain profile and the range in

elevation (Appendix D).

Wetland and Watercourse

There are two stream crossings located on the property. One is situated on the northern portion

while the other is close to the southern boundary. The northern stream flows east towards Upper

Maclures Pond whereas the southern stream flows east towards Maclures Pond (Figure 1).

Property Access

Access to the property is through a “right-of-way” that connects to the south eastern corner of

the property. This right-of-way has a house on either side of it. A class 2 road is located on the property

that travels in a northerly direction for approximately 1.2 kilometres (kms). This access road is one lane

with ditching on either side. Rutting was observed on this access road which will limit travel to vehicles

with a high ground clearance.

On-going road maintenance will be required to keep the road in drivable condition. This will

include keeping the right-of-way clear of any brush or trees, repairing rutting on the road, repairing any

wet areas that restrict access, and any other maintenance required to keep these roads drivable.

Property Boundaries

This property is bounded by private land owners on all sides. A total of 7 different properties

surround the borders of property 243485. The Pleasant Valley Road, route # 202, a paved government

road, borders the southern portion of the property.

Fire Protection

This property is located within the jurisdiction of the Murray River Fire Department. Protection

of our woodland from forest fire is the responsibility of the Forest Fish and Wildlife Division and our

local community fire brigades. In the Eastern District, there is a 900 gallon (gal) four wheel drive forestry

fire trucks housed at each of the Souris, East River and Georgetown Fire Departments. These heavy duty

trucks are available to assist the local fire department responsible for this area. Additional forestry fire

trucks, off road tracked vehicles, portable pumps and specialized forest fire suppression equipment are

available if needed.

Planting and Silviculture

There are 5 plantations on the property. It is recommended that any trees planted on the

property be assessed at regular intervals. These assessments will determine if the planted trees require

manual maintenance or fill planting as specified in the Ecosystem-Based Forest Management Standards

manual. A list of all silviculture treatments completed on the property from 1991 to present is shown in

Appendix E.

Proposed Treatments

The 2006 Forest Policy “Moving to Restore a Balance in Island Forests” lays out the framework

for public land forest management. The Ecosystem-based Forest Management Standards Manual (Eco-

Manual) provides details for prescribed treatments. All work completed on this property must comply

with that manual. Table 1 provides a summary of the prescribed treatments on this property. This table

will be updated as required when additional treatments are prescribed. For a better understanding of

the treatments prescribed, a more detailed explanation is available in the Eco-Manual,

(www.gov.pe.ca/go/eco-manual). Any additional information may be obtained by contacting a

Provincial Forest Representative at the District Forestry Office in Southampton (961-7296).
