Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the PEI Legion
Dedicated to all Prince Edward Islanders who served their country in times of war and peace.
VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 16 / 1
ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION - MILITARY SERVICE RECOGNITION
Islanders have a long and proud tradition of answering the call of duty
in times of conflict and in times of peace – protecting and helping those in need
here at home and around the world.
We are privileged to live with the freedoms that we have been afforded.
Freedoms that brave individuals have chosen to serve for and uphold …
freedoms that we can innocently take for granted. It is important that we
honour them and those who carry on their legacy.
On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, I offer warm
wishes and congratulations to the Royal Canadian Legion on the annual
publication of the Military Service Recognition booklet.

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND
June 6th, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day battles which freed Europe from the Nazi tyranny. A tour
of the many European Commonwealth war cemeteries will show you that this was at a tremendous cost to our
nation and to our precious Island homes. Some of the epitaphs written on the tombstones of fallen PEI comrades
tell the sad story:
“Lonely, dreary are the days since one we love went away. Lovingly remembered by his grandmother.”
“The blow was hard, the shock severe to part with one I loved so dear. Mother”
“We think of him in silence his name we oft recall, all that’s left to answer is his picture on the wall.”
“Free men everywhere should remember them on your name.”
We can be very proud of the role our Canadian soldiers played in both world wars and subsequent peacekeeping
and military actions that have taken place around our world. These epitaphs ring true even today for loved ones
whose sons or daughters have suffered or died for our country.
This is why the Legion exists, so that Canada will never forget and why we advocate for the care and benefits for
all who served Canada, regardless of when or where they served. This booklet provides another vital way to
remember those who have served.
On behalf of the Prince Edward Island Command executive council of The Royal Canadian Legion, I wish to
express our gratitude and appreciation for the countless volunteer hours logged by our members, staff and the
Ladies Auxiliary of The Legion.
It is through the strong effort of this booklet and our organization that we will continue our strong community
support to develop and fund programs for our Veterans, seniors and youth.
“We will remember them.” - « Nous nous souviendrons d’eux. »

100TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE
The year 2019 marks the 100th Anniversary of the
Provincial Command of what is now The Royal
Canadian Legion.
On the 24th of September 1919, Veterans from
seven branches of the Great War Veterans’
Association met in Charlottetown and formed a
Provincial Command of the association. At that
time there were eight branches of the G.W.V.A. on
Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown,
Summerside, Tignish, Alberton, O’Leary, Souris,
Georgetown, and Montague. All the branches
except Montague were represented at the
meeting.
The meeting elected the following members:
President - D. A. McKinnon, Charlottetown; Vice-
President - J. F. Sterns, Souris; Second Vice-
President - J. W. Whitney, Summerside; and
Executive Members - A. E. B. Murphy, Tignish;
W. W. Rogers, Alberton; Robert Horne, O’Leary; R.
R. McLean, Georgetown; and Reg Doiron,
Montague.
In 1925 the G.W.V.A. joined with other Canadian
Veteran groups and formed the Canadian Legion
of the British Empire Service League, and in
1958 the name was shortened to just the Canadian
Legion. Finally, in 1960, by Royal Assent, the
Legion became The Royal Canadian Legion.
