Revise the sounds satpinmdgocke

I have allocated some phonics games to your child’s active learn profile under the tab “bug club” that will help with phonics revision. (Please see the help sheet on signing up to active learn from last week if you haven’t already).

Watch the jolly phonics songs on youtube for each phoneme Pick a sound during your walk and see if you can find something that starts with that sound If you have magnetic letters you could stick them to your radiator or fridge and give your

child a soft object, such as a ball of socks when you say “d” your child has to try and throw the soft object and hit the letter. If you don’t have magnetic letters this game works just as well on the floor.

This week introduce “In the garden” by looking at growing. Our superstar challenge this week is to grow cress or sunflower seeds. If you didn’t manage to get

seeds, there are lots of time-lapse on YouTube. Check your seeds every day and record a photo diary of the changes seen- make it clear to your

child that changes seen are the seeds growing. Look at baby photos of your child and other members of your family- talk about how they have

changed and tell them this is also called “growing”. What do humans need to grow? Discuss how every animal and plant needs things to help them grow; This video is helpful for this

but does have a lot of words so may not be appropriate for everyone https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpxnyrd/articles/zxxsyrd

Play “Get growing” on tvo kids it’s a short animation were children can pick what they want to grow, water the plant and give it sunlight. https://www.tvokids.com/preschool/games/get-growing.

Explore the sounds of the garden through Twinkl’s “Level 1 phonics The Garden Environmental Sounds Game” https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/tg-ga-146-level-1-phonics-the-garden-environmental-sounds-game

Music- Introduce the concept of beats (also syllables); go on a walk around your garden or street and clap out the beats in words. Can your child remember all of the names of the children in our class- how many beats are in their name? Whose name has the most syllables?

P.E.- I have attached the schemes for “Fundamental Movement Skills Balance” and “Fundamental Movement Skills Catch” in case you find these helpful on working on fundamental movement skills at home alongside this topic.

Literacy Ideas ITG week 1

● Read “Jack & the beanstalk” together or any other book about growing that you have at home. I have attached an e-book from twinkl that you could read together. Remember to try and build comprehension through this reading asking simple questions such as “point to the cow” and building up to trickier questions such as “how do you think Jack feels.”

● BBQ scene talking prompt - To continue to work on comprehension work download the “BBQ scene talking prompt and

answers”. For verbal children try asking them the “wh” questions and accept any logical answers.

- For children who are non-verbal try adapting the questions to have a receptive response such as “point to their favourite fruit” or “point to the animal on in the tree” or you could also adapt the activity by making little cut outs of the pictures and letting your child give you the answer through picture exchange.

- You could also use this prompt for some word level understanding work. For 2WL activities ask your child to “point to” i.e. “point to the banana and the boy” or have a selection of toys to choose from and give the instruction “give the cat the car”. For 3WL extend this by asking the child to do this with three things “point to the banana, the boy and the cat” or selecting from toys “give the cat the car and the train.”

● Continue to work on number and letter formation any way you can- you could create letter or number “trails” with seeds, lentils etc. and ask your child to follow the pattern and then try and copy the pattern.

○ Plan a garden together- discuss what would be the perfect garden- what plants, play areas etc. would you have! You can stick pictures on or draw it and then an adult can write about it or label it using your ideas. The planning for writing is the important part but if able and willing it would be great if your child contributed to the writing, even if it was hand over hand.

Using Mathematics ideas ITG week 1

Number:

● Ordering numerals: Bud’s number garden starts with a revision counting song, ordering numerals 1-5 and then works its way through a range of number work with increasing difficulty. https://www.bbc.co.uk/games/embed/education-ivor-starting-school?exitGameUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fbbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzd4b382

Download the “Addition fingers to 5” or the “Addition stories to 10” handout based on your child’s ability- if able work on writing the number sentences correctly.

● Continue with any counting and addition games from previous weeks or home as revision. You can take 5 minutes at the starter of your measure and money work to recap some of these skills.

Measure: Height This week we are working on comparing 2 heights using the terminology “taller” or “shorter” or any other appropriate terminology. This can be extended by comparing and ordering 3 heights from smallest to tallest.

Check to see if your child can respond to the instruction “point to the taller thing” or “smaller” by sorting the toys out. Take two toys out of a “special” box or basket and tell them each time the taller toy has to go to one area of the room and the smaller one has to go to a different area of the room.

If your child can sort taller and smaller then you can ask them to expressively answer “is this toy taller or smaller?” or you could give them a taller and smaller visual that they give you to answer this question. If you are not sure, practice using this terminology and repeating this game with as many different things as you can find.

On Twinkl search “beanstalk height ordering game” this game ranges from one star (3 sizes) and gets more difficult- it isn’t clear but the aim of the game is to order the beanstalks from smallest to tallest by placing the smallest on the left hand side of the screen and moving them until the tallest one is on the right.

Give your child an item such as “a pen” and send them on a hunt around the room to find something bigger/taller/ longer or smaller/shorter than it.

Money: Introducing coins and exploring different ways to sort coins Go through the introducing coins 1p and 2p powerpoint on our class website. Gather real 1p and 2p coins (if you would like extend this to 5p/10p) and ask your child to sort the

coins into money dishes. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins- game play the sorting one coin section of this game to

enable experience of a range of coins- point out the coin the box is looking for an ask your child to find all the coins that are the same and put them in the box.

Practice counting on in 1s and 2s with 1p and 2p coins using a number line to support counting on in 2s.

Structured play ideas: ITG week 1

I am aware that you all have different toys at home and there are very different interests across the class, so I will only include 3 or 4 play ideas a week that I would be doing in school, but please do not feel pressure to replicate these at home, structured play is about helping your child learn about the world around them in a really fun, child-led way.

If you have some toy fruit or vegetables, you could create a “growing” tuff tray. Give your child some colours and paper and ask them to draw what they see in the garden or

outside. Water play: Create a “garden potion” with items found lying around the garden/outside and a

bucket of water- can your child remember what is in their potion?

As always there is absolutely no pressure! Use what is helpful, ignore what is not! Hopefully you can all access the allocated phonics work on active learn this week as I’m going to allocate some reading for next week as well. I can see who has been on their allocated work; I’ve already seen one name and it was lovely to see his wee name pop up so I will hopefully be able to check that you have got it working okay- again no pressure! I am not checking in to make sure you do all that is set at all, it’s just nice to know you were able to understand my instructions.

Thank you for everything you are doing for your family right now! I’m thinking of you all and miss my lovely little class so much! Please pass on that Mrs Lemon & Miss Anderson send their best wishes too.

Mrs Thompson
