ATLANTIS: THE LOST CITY

This week, we’re going on an adventure! We’re going to explore the vast unknown, at the very bottom of the deep, dark ocean. Be prepared for absolutely anything as we voyage to the legendary lost city of Atlantis!

What is Atlantis? Is it fact or fiction? Where did the legend originate? Where, if anywhere, can the lost city be found?

Today, I would like you to conduct some research into this fantastical place and create a non-chronological report.

Please click on the following links to access information which will support you with today’s work:

FEAR-A IN THERA

Many believe that the legendary city of Atlantis was catastrophically destroyed by a ginormous tsunami around the 16th century B.C. The tsunami occurred as a result of the devastating Minoan eruption on the island on Thera (modern day Santorini), which is described as being four times more powerful than the terrifying eruption of Krakatoa in 1883.

Today, I would like you to write a newspaper report about this world-changing event! I would like you to report on the destructive eruption of Thera, the unprecedented tidal wave that followed and the tragic loss of the city of Atlantis.

Don’t forget to include an attention-grabbing headline, a 4W sentence, a picture and a caption and lots of quotes!

OCEAN VIEWS ALL AROUND

Now that we know a little bit more about Plato’s doomed city of Atlantis, I would like you to prepare a travel brochure for our forthcoming trip!

To create your travel brochure, you can include some of the facts discovered earlier during the week, but you may also need to depend upon your own vivid imagination! What will the city look like? What are the highlights of this magnificent city? What activities can we look forward to?

Travel brochures need to be attention-grabbing and persuasive! You will need to include rhetorical questions, exclamations, imperative verbs, second person pronouns and countless superlatives!

Please click on the following link to access a resource which may support you with today’s activity:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgcwmn/articles/zrjqpg8

You may wish to look at some of the following exemplary persuasive texts to inspire you:

HOW WILL WE GET THERE?

Currently, Atlantis lies at the bottom of a huge, tumultuous ocean, so the journey to this incredible destination will not be easy! Only the strong and the brave will survive our epic adventure into the unknown!

How will we journey across the vast, unpredictable ocean? How will be battle the enormous, turbulent waves? We’re going to need a bigger boat!

How will we descend hundreds of feet beneath the dark, murky surface of the Atlantic ocean? We’re going to need scuba diving equipment!

Today, I would like you to write a set of instructions. You may decide to write instructions on how to build the raft you designed during Tuesday’s Science lesson, or you may decide to write instructions about how to scuba dive.

Remember: instructions should contain subheadings, numbered bullet points, imperative verbs and adverbs!

Please click on the following link to access a video which will help you with today’s task:

WISH YOU WERE HERE!

Wow! We did it! We ventured where no man or woman has ever ventured before!

How was your trip to the lost city of Atlantis? What was your favourite part? What will you never forget? Who would you recommend this visit too?

Today, I would like you to write a postcard about this once-in-a-lifetime escapade! You will need to write in first person and past tense.

hsCO-ORDINATES

Where on Earth is the lost city of Atlantis? Historians have debated this question since before Christ was born.

Today, I would like you to pinpoint Atlantis on a map of the Mediterranean Sea. To do this, you will need a secure understanding of how to use coordinates.

Please click on the following link to access an article which will support you with today’s task:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgthvcw/articles/z96k9qt

Following this, practise what you have learnt by playing the following interactive game:

https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/click-coordinate.html

Now, you are more than ready to don your detective cap and find these hypothesised locations for the city of Atlantis on the map below:

1. (3, 9)2. (4, 9)3. (15, 13)4. (18, 13)5. (19, 9)6. (27, 9)7. (28, 10)8. (27, 12)9. (33, 8)10. (33, 5)

HOW MUCH WILL OUR VISIT COST?

How much will our epic trip to Atlantis cost? I’m almost certain that it may cost above and beyond the school’s budget!

Today, I would like you to use your knowledge of currency and addition to calculate the grand total of our visit.

We will need a flight for twenty-nine children to the Greek island of Santorini, a hotel stay for at least one night, meal allowances for breakfast, lunch and dinner and hire of scuba diving equipment.

Please visit the following websites to find some exciting holiday deals:

HISTORY –PRIMARY SOURCES OF EVIDENCE

This afternoon, I would like you to become an observant and considerate historian, using primary sources of evidence to paint a detailed picture of the past. Please click on the following link to find out about primary and secondary sources:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zq7dq6f

It is widely believed that Atlantis was once part of the Minoan civilisation, in Ancient Greece. Today, we can carefully study Minoan artefacts and Minoan Art to determine what life was like in Atlantis, before it tragically sunk beneath the waves.

I would like you to explore the Minoan exhibit at the British Museum and then complete the answer sheet at the end of this week’s planning.

Please click here for a virtual tour of Room 12 in the British Museum:

https://artsandculture.google.com/streetview/british-museum/AwEp68JO4NECkQ?sv_h=55.505939882660584&sv_p=-2.369022564696593&sv_pid=uT5ZKwGm1UqfivkOM_vZcQ&sv_lid=3582009757710443819&sv_lng=-0.1273363091378314&sv_lat=51. 51852157140097&sv_z=0.69112 92499459274

SCIENCE –SINKING / FLOATING

The journey to Atlantis will undoubtedly require a boat! Since we’re unlikely to have enough money to afford boat hire, I am going to challenge you to build your very own!

What will your boat need to do? It will need to safely and successfully transport 29 children and 1 adult across the Mediterranean sea. Therefore, it will need to be able to float above water, move steadily from one location to another, and support a considerably large mass!

Why do some objects float and some objects sink? Please click on the following link to learn more:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zc89k7h/articles/zytqj6f

I would now like you to find and test various materials in water. Do they possess buoyancy or not? What happens when you begin to add extra mass to the material, i.e. add pennies or peas? Is the material large enough? What happens when you increase the size of the material? Can you find a way to make your material move across the surface of the water?

Ultimately, I would like you to determine a final design for your boat. You may either draw it or build it, but I would like you to label the buoyant materials you have used. Have fun!

GEOGRAPHY –USING MAPS

Whilst journeying towards the fabled city of Atlantis, we will need to become keen map experts.

A map can either be a two-dimensional drawing or an aerial photograph of an area. They are used to help plan routes from one location to another.

Please click on the following link to access resources which will support you with today’s learning:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zkngrj6

Today, I would like you to plan and draw our route from St Alban’s to Birmingham Airport and then from Santorini Airport to the old harbour, and eventually to the lost city of Atlantis. I would like you to use the maps beneath this planning, although you may wish to use Google Maps too:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps

After labelling the map with our route, I would like you to list any points of interest we may pass while on our way, i.e. museums, parks, beaches, etc. Could we visit any other exciting destinations while on our trip?

For an additional challenge, you could use some of the correct symbols for each of these tourist attractions:

SCIENCE –PLASTIC POLLUTION

During our unforgettable adventure to the lost city of Atlantis, we dived deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean and came face-to-face with countless amazing sea creatures.

Sadly, many of these wonderful and unique creatures are currently threatened with extinction due to increasing levels of plastic pollution.

What can be done to save our planet and to save these fascinating animals? Today, I would like you to create a colourful, captivating and informative poster about the dangers of plastic pollution. I would like you to consider what the problem is, where the problem is coming from, which of the animals are most at risk, what can be done to solve the problem and how soon this needs to happen.
