Dear Parents

I am sure that like me you are all delighted and suitably proud at the result of our accreditation visit from Fieldwork Education. We are now not only the first school in the world to be awarded ‘Mastering’ level but we are also the first school in the world to be re-awarded ‘Mastering’ level. These are two accolades that will always be with us. In our desire for continued improvement we have promoted two teachers from our current staff so that we now have three teachers leading a team to develop the way we use the IPC.

Our recent round of recruitment has been very successful, not only resulting in some excellent external appointments, but also in some teachers gaining promotion from within the school. There were nearly two hundred applicants and once contracts have been signed and resignations confirmed I will let you know the outcome.

It was great to see so many people attending the presentation delivered by Professor Jim Cummins on Tuesday, 16th April. Professor Cummins spent three days with us evaluating and advising on our English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Mother Tongue programmes. We learned a great deal from his visit and received a number of compliments as he informed us that we were at “the cutting edge” and “at the forefront of developments” with our EAL and Mother Tongue programmes. A number of Jim’s presentations were filmed and once edited will be placed on the website.

Today we bid a temporary ‘Bon Voyage’ to Lara Rikers who coordinates our EAL programme and is going on maternity leave. We are fortunate to have two excellent people, Owen Langdale and Susanne ten Berge-Beck, to replace her. Both are experienced in EAL and know the school very well.

I hope you enjoy the celebrations for the investiture of the new King and I wish you all a relaxing and safe holiday.

MT after schoolProfessor Jim Cummins, leading bi-lingual expert, visited the ISH Primary for three full days last week. His purpose was twofold: to bring the ISH community up-to-date on the current research around language learning, and to evaluate the English as and Additional Language and Mother Tongue programmes we have at ISH. His message was both inspiring and reassuring. In his view, we have developed great practice to help our children achieve their full language potential. In the coming weeks we will reflect on how to build onto our current EAL and MT programmes to develop both further and make even better use of our children’s languages and their learning.Quote from Professor Cummins at the parents’ presentation: “There are some schools that you walk through and wish that your own children would have had the opportunity to be in them. This is one of those schools. I’ve been really inspired by what I’ve seen over the last couple of days and encouraged that this is happening here, because not only is there a focus on developing the whole child, but there’s an explicit focus on the fact that all children have the potential to be linguistically talented and we should be picking up, acknowledging the languages and the cultural knowledge the children are bringing to school and making the children more than they were. And that’s actively happening in this school.” We will share some of the knowledge we have learned during Professor Cummins visit in the following newsletters.MT after schoolGerman Upper School on Thursdays: Since the number of children has been growing during this year we can now split the group in two smaller groups. This will help the tutors to differentiate more and therefore support will be even better for the German language development of our children. Ms. Pasay is already our tutor for Lower School German on Wednesday and will be the teacher for this new group.

- Thomas
