2. FocusGroups
By their nature focus groups aredesigned to facilitate a free and candiddiscussionof key issues.Groupdiscussionsandfocusgroupsprovideanalternativetoone-on-oneinterviewsandareusedtogatherdatarelatingtothefeelingsandopinionsofagroupofpeoplewhoareinvolvedinacommonsituation.Theycanbeconductedface-to-faceorviatele-/video-conferencing,etc.

CollisandHussey(2003)recommendthefollowingstepsinformingandrunningafocusgroup:
Ø Inviteagroupofpeople,withsufficientexperienceincommon(e.g.earlycareerresearchers),toattendataneutrallocation
Ø Introducethegroupmembersandoutlinethepurposeofthestudyandhowthefocusgroupwillbeconducted
Ø Startthesessionwithabroadopenquestion–whichmaybeonaflipchartoroverheadprojectorscreen
Ø Allowthegrouptodiscussthetopics,interveningtoensurethatallparticipantshaveanopportunitytocontribute

AccordingtoSaundersetal(2016),participantsarenormallychosenusingnon-probabilitysampling,oftenwithaspecificpurposeinmindtobestreflecttheviewsofthetargetgroupwhoarecriticaltothestudy/project.Invitationstoattendshouldcomedirectlyfromtheresearcher/teamleaderratherthanthroughmanagers/supervisors,tostressthevoluntarynatureofthecall.Participantsneedtobe grouped (according to their grade/status and/or similarworkexperiences) to ensure that theywillnotfeelinhibitedinvoicingtheirpossiblecontributions.

There are no firm rules as to the gender mix of focus group participants. Generally in a genderequality study, the norm would be to invite all genders unless the topic dictated otherwise e.g.experienceof returning toacademe, aftermaternity leave;measures thatmight induce fathers toavailofpaternity/parentalleave.
