chess cluBChess is a wonderful game of deduction, reasoning, strategic analysis, concentration, spatial awareness, logic and social interaction. It is an excellent way to develop strategic thinking skills

and make friends. The children are taught by experienced teachers from Chess Ideas, a company providing chess coaching in schools since 1994.

Children learn about the value of pieces, how each piece moves, strategies to commence a game and strategies to defend the King. As their skill level improves, they are given problems to solve through simulations, and set plays are designed to further broaden their understanding about the strategies and intricacies of the game. They are engaged in tournament and match play activities and receive individual attention as they learn to develop sound attack and defence skills.

Groups are based on year group and ability and beginners and experienced players are welcome.

GymnAstics cluB Gymnastics is a fun and challenging sport that builds strong foundations and fundamental movement patterns as well as coordination and partner work. Gymnastics is a great basis to build on for other sports and activities.

Our gymnastics program embodies the Gymnastics Australia Junior Recreational Gymnastics program that teaches children the fundamental movement skills required to lead an active and healthy life full of sport and recreation. Gymnastics gives children the opportunity to practise, develop and enjoy moving through a wide-range of activities while assisting them to develop physically, socially and cognitively.

Gymnastics session focus:

• Exciting warm up/team building games

• Fun and challenging circuits with a gymnastics twist

• Develop a floor routine to demonstrate at the end of term

• Gradual progression and advancement in balance, strength, coordination and body awareness

• Ideal for all levels and abilities

The most important aspect of our gymnastics sessions is to ensure everyone has fun and challenges themselves. It is important that each child looks forward to gymnastics each week where they can learn something new and gradually progress and be proud of their abilities and achievements.

kArAteKarate has been taught at Christ Church Grammar School as a cocurricular activity for over fifteen years and is about control and discipline. We teach traditional karate with a contemporary outlook, utilising modern coaching principles and encouraging the children to be the very best they can be.

Karate enhances personal development in many ways, increases personal confidence, learning self-defence skills whilst enjoying game sense skill work.

All gradings are conducted during regular sessions and all students enjoy being empowered in a structured and nurturing environment. The skills initially taught include defensive movements, (blocks), body evasion, awareness and assertiveness. With increased knowledge, the children are taught more self-defence strategies, kata, (prescribed patterns upon which the grading syllabus is based), and years later, kumite (sparring). We strive to attain a high level of skill from all our students.

Cost: $200 per term for the lessons.

NB: the cost of a uniform and membership will be charged directly by Art of Defence

Class times: Years 2 – 6, Tuesday lunchtime. Prep - Year 1, Friday lunchtime

Teachers: David and Amelia Zarb from Defence Australia

homework cluBWhat does homework look like for you?

Primary students learn upwards of 100 new topics every year. Odds are, when homework is set, they are going to need help with a few of them. As a parent, the help you give depends on your time, subject knowledge and teaching ability. But when

these aren’t there, there are fights, miscommunications and stress in the home. Sound familiar?

That’s where Homework Club comes in. The program relieves pressure on busy working parents, helping out with the weekly homework routine. Our tutors assist your child with their tasks, using it as an opportunity to fill any gaps in knowledge and teach important study skills. To keep you in the loop, you’ll receive a weekly feedback report, detailing everything your child has done in the session.

musicChild-focused classroom music, instrumental and choral programs provide all students with the opportunities to experience the joys and benefits of creating, singing, playing and listening to quality music.

Individual instrumental tuition is offered to all children, from those who just want to “have a go” to those with considerable skills who aspire to excel. Whether their passion be strings, woodwind, brass, piano, percussion, voice or guitar, students are provided appropriate opportunities, expert instruction and sensitive guidance. Complementing this, the school provides a vibrant cocurricular ensemble and choral program with a range of groups to engage and extend the students’ musical learning.

Performance is an integral part of our music programs with children of all abilities given many opportunities throughout the year to perform in a positive, supportive environment.

Music is all-inclusive, joyous and child-centred, with a place for every child.

For further information about the cocurricular music program, contact the Director of Music.
