H. CLARENCE W HAITE PRESIDENT

R oyal Cambrian Academy of Art, 1885- 19 12

Centenary of H. Clarence Whaite.

THIS year being the Centenary of the birth of the artist . '.Mr. H . Claren ce Whaite, the Council of the Aca demy thought it fitting t o recognise t he occasion by introdu cing ·into t h e

E xhibit ion t wo represent ative works by him, a nd t hese a re " Snowdon ," an importa nt oil painting (No. 207'in the Cata logue) , a n d a water colour d rawing, ·" Roma n Bridge," (No. 280 in the Cata logue), b oth of which have been kindly loaned b y ·the owners, t he Trustees of the Nat ional Museum of Wales, Cardiff ..

. \

Mr. Whait e was for a long p eriod a m ember of the R oy a1 Cambrian Academy of Art, a nd in 1885, whe n the office of P resident was creat ed, he was e lect ed to the p osition , which h e occupied unt il his death in 1912, a nd during his t enure of office he was assiduou s in his efforts t o promot e the interest s of t he Academy. · ·

With acknowledgm ents t o the prop rietors of T he .Manchester City N ews an app reciation of Mr. Whaite, published in that journal on the 28th J a nuary last, is r eprinted here . .

" Manchest er has pr oduced n o artist whose works. are m ore admired or whose ch aracter is more highly esteemed than H enry Clarence \Vh aite . H e was born just a hundred . years ago on J anuary .27th, 1828, at 4, Bridge ·s treet , · Ma.nchest e r; and h e d ied a t a ripe old age in 1912. H is t raining was a t the .Ma'nchest er Sch ool of Art, under Mr. J ohn Zephaniah Bell, a nd h e began his career as a figure and decorative pa in t er . ·we learn from an admirable little memoir p ublished by his fam ily (and from which we freely q uote) t hat a visit to Swit zerlan d, un'dert aken for t he restoration of his health, showed him t hat his real

vocation lay in the field o{ landscape painting. The subseque nt story of his life is that of a n earnest and fruitful devotion to his art. He came under the influence of R uskin and Turner, but remained free to interpret nature in accordance with the guiding of his own strongly marked individuality . .

HONOURING GENIUS. " He was for the great er part of his life a regular exhibitor

a t the Royal Academy and the Royal \,Vater Colour Society, and in 1882 was elected a member of the latter institution. The Royal Cambrian Academy fitly recognised his fine interpretation of \~1elsh scene ry by electing him t heir President, and the esteem in which he was held by his fe llow artists in Manchester was shown by his election as President of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. The striking statue in bronze, the wor k of Mr. John Cassidy, was subscribed by his fellow citizens as a token of their h igh regard . \,\The n the King and Queen visited Conway Clarence Whaite was chosen to act as guide to their Royal Highnesses, and h e carried out his duties with characteristic ease and dignity.

"\~Te can fully endorse the tribute paid to Claren ce vVhaite that ' Nature found in him a r a re interpreter of h e r m anifold power and beauty. The strength of the hills, the trees and home.steads in the valley, he headlong torrent swirling and clashing amongst the rocks, the lake, the gently -flowing stream in the lowlands-all these, and many other scenes, are presented to us under widely differing and subtly rendered effects of light and shade, of calm and storm, and-with the frequen cy which tells of deep affection ,1 an.cl with wonderful skill- at the moment when the storr11 is passing away and the rainbow heralds the return of peace .

PUBLIC SERVICE.
