December is here and we’re welcoming the cooler weather. As we get ready for the holiday season the BCCC is looking forward to its annual Christmas party and the Mt. Pleasant Christmas Parade. Diane, Millie and Irene have once again stepped up to organize a great party gathering at the Lib-erty Tap Room in Mt. Pleasant. Hopefully you’ve rsvp’d for

the party because it is always a grand event, in a really nice venue.

Our December meeting will be at the Christmas party. In the past we had a November meeting where nominations for next year’s Club offices are solicited and collected, with the voting at the Christmas party. This year we’ll start the nomination process at the par-ty and have a club vote at the January meeting. Everyone is encouraged to participate, as the club’s identity is the sum of its members. That is what makes our club special.

The annual Mt. Pleasant Christmas parade is coming up on the 11th, which is a Sunday even-ing. This is a great way to start your holiday festivities. The club meets at the Coleman garage by about 4:00pm to decorate their cars, eat a chili dinner, and have a good time. You get to watch ½ of the parade go by then it’s our turn to drive down the boulevard and treat the parade crowd to the sight of fine British cars. Everyone is welcome and we’ll be sending out an email with more detailed information. Several new members are coming and there is even a rumor that Dennis is going to return after a long absence.

Thanks to Michael for putting together the Mepkin Abbey Crèche drive, he has several more nice drives being planned for the club coming up, one is sure to include a talk by our amazing resident history expert and club member, Tom Horton.

So, Merry Christmas to all, and we look forward to having a great party and parade to ush-er in the season of good will and good cheer.

Mt. Pleasant Christmas Parade Sunday December 11th

The BCCC is once again entered in the Town of Mt. Pleasant Christmas Parade. All club members are invited to participate. Wray and Susanne will host the club at the Coleman garage for a chili and fixings supper party while members decorate their cars. All cars must have lights on them, the more the better. You have plenty of time to pick up a set of battery powered lights or to rig an inverter to power your decorations. The Town loves lots of lights, so have at it.

We meet at the Coleman garage no later than 4:30; the Town closes Coleman Blvd at that time. After 4:30 you must come to the garage via Houston Northcutt Blvd. The festivities start at 5:30, but we usually don't start rolling until around 6:00pm or so.

Bring a dessert or appetizer if you want, but we'll have everything else.

This is a great event and a lot of fun and we promise you will enjoy it. It's a great way to start the Christmas season.

Hello Everyone,

As we wrap up another great British Car Club year, it’s important to thank all of you who have been instrumental in making this year successful. As we all know, it takes all of us to make the Club enjoyable.

At this time, I would like to thank our Board members who work behind the scenes to somehow make everyone and everything come together.

Wray Lemke, President – tries to keep us all moving in the right direction. If you’ve ever been to a Planning meeting, you know that’s not always an easy task as we have many crea-tive people on board with lots of great ideas.

Susanne, Wray’s lovely wife – As Mrs. Prez, I suspect she keeps Wray on track with re-minders for meetings and obligations. Her assistance is greatly appreciated.

Bruce Stemerman, Treasurer – has spent a great deal of time keeping the Club on budget. He did a great job of keeping everyone on track with the BCD funds, and I’m looking for-ward to seeing a monthly Treasurer’s report in The Windscreen.

Mert Fox, Secretary – has done a great job of keeping us up to speed by not only report-ing the minutes in The Windscreen, but also by sending countless event email blasts so that we are in-the-know of what’s coming up so we don’t miss out on any fun trips or activ-ities. Mert also researches sources and pricing for items that he feels will help the Club or that members may need or want. Thank you Mert for your help with so many areas of interest for the Club.

Don Kelly, Membership Coordinator – usually the first point of contact with the Club, Don is always ready to welcome new members. He can be heard regaling about his car or those of others; about car events; about car shows, you name it, Don’s got the scoop. Thank you for making everyone feel welcome.

Grace Clark, Regalia Coordinator – although we don’t get to see Grace much, she works behind the scenes locating the best sources and pricing for our regalia. Grace’s efforts keep interesting items coming our way at reasonable prices, and we appreciate her time and efforts in doing this.

Millie Horton, Regalia Sales – Millie has done a wonderful job again this year of keeping regalia in stock for all of us to enjoy. I want to give a special thanks to Millie for literally toting the goods to meetings and events for our convenience which is definitely not always convenient for her. Also, thank you for keeping up with filling and shipping our on-line or-ders.

Dave Rosato, Editor and Webmaster – not to single out any one Board member, but Dave has taken on a dual role and is doing such a great job with both. We’ve always had a great Windscreen, and Dave has continued that tradition. He has also revamped our website with lots of great enhance-ments to ensure that we’re all kept up-to-date with all things related to the Club and our Brit cars. The updated website is very user friendly so even those of us who many not be very tech savvy can easily navigate the site to find every-thing we need to enjoy the Club, its members, events, and auto necessities.

Lynn Rosato, Dave’s lovely wife – I suspect Lynn may be the Assistant Editor. I know that she is a great contributor to The Windscreen as she is to the Club in general. If you’ve made some of the great recipes Lynn has shared with us, send Dave a few lines to publish to encourage the rest of us to try our hand at making some great English dishes. If you think you’ve solved a word puzzle that Lynn has challenged us with, again, send Dave a few lines to publish to encourage the rest of us to work our brains a little more. Always there to lend a hand wherever needed, Lynn’s contributions are greatly appreciat-ed.

Michael Rains, Events Coordinator – Last, but certainly not least, the role of Events Coor-dinator can be a daunting task, but Michael has shown us during his first year that he is definitely up to the task. He has made numerous arrangements for our enjoyment, and he is constantly researching interesting and fun places to visit and places to meet. He has teamed up with several of our members to work through a plan, and we have all bene-fited from the collaborations. Michael is very humble and will say that he gets a lot of help from members, but it takes that special, steady, patient person to bring it all to-gether, and Michael does it with a smile. On behalf of all of us, thank you Michael!

I also want to give a huge thank you to every member who has stepped up this year to contribute for our enjoyment and betterment of the Club. From events at their home, helping plan an event or volunteering to work an event, securing sponsors or donations or just offering a helping hand, these are the folks who help make everything come togeth-er for no reason other than to share camaraderie and make the Club fun and successful. I would venture a guess that there probably are not too many local car clubs that have been around for 34 years, but ours has sustained because of the continued efforts of our great members!

Jack and I wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy, Healthy and an adventurous Brit Car year in 2017!

From the Editor/Webmaster It’s been almost a year since I took over putting The Windscreen together. Taking over this task was a great challenge because Dennis had been doing such a great job for so many years. The Windscreen wouldn’t be what it is if it wasn’t for the input from the members of the club. We’re all volunteers and I really appreciate the efforts of everyone, juggling their personal lives to make room for the demands of the club. If you haven’t submitted content for The Windscreen before, please consider it. All I need is a paragraph or two. Don’t forget to pull out your smartphone and take some pictures. It could be a BCCC drive, a repair on you car or someplace you visited that you’d like to share.

Our membership keeps going up and we’d like to hear from our new members. Send in a little sum-mary of where you’re from and what British cars you have. It doesn’t have to be something Brit-ish. See my write-up on Page 12. We’d like to hear from you.

I’m glad to see that our website has almost 60,000 hits since I updated it. The For Sale/Wanted page has showed a lot of interest. If you have any suggestions for improving the site, please con-tact me. I enjoy working on the site. Michael manages the Events calendar. 2016 Mepkin Abbey Crèche Festival Jack and Diane

Fifteen Brit Car Club members and two guests made the drive to Moncks Corner on a beautiful, crisp fall morning in anticipation of spending the morning visiting the Crèche Festival at Mepkin Abbey. This is an annual event, and if you have not enjoyed this Festi-val, it’s definitely one to add to your list.

This is the perfect venue and event to treat your family or holiday guests to as there are so many, in this case 83 crèches to view. I was told that the artists are never the same year over year so you’re assured that even if you make this an annual event, you won’t be viewing the same crèches that you viewed last year.

The artistry is extraordinary, and as with any artwork, the artists’ visions are diverse, beautiful, and interesting. The exhibits are from all over the world which provides such a multicultural display that is truly amazing to see. In addition to the artists’ work, some of the displays are in the beautiful gardens, and some are inside; however, the viewing areas are filled with live trees which adds a special ambience to the whole experience. While we were there, we also got to enjoy the songs of the CSU choir which of course added another level of elegance to the event.

Jack and I had been meaning to visit this display for some time, but holiday commitments had prevented us from doing so; however, when Michael Rains made the Club reservation, we decided that this was the year, and we are so glad we participated. For us, it brought us back to what Christmas is about despite the overwhelming glitz and glamour hype that invades our worlds every day starting in October.

Once you complete your tour (we spent about an hour or so), you’re free to picnic on the grounds, tour the gar-dens or even go back through again if you like. We elect-ed to meet for lunch at Gilligans to continue the enjoy-ment of the morning.

The facilities are easily accessible for all with no admis-sion charge and is a true family experience.

Cars and Coffee and Mepkin Abbey By Mike West

This month, I’ll have to include several events in one boring paragraph! Brit Car Day is not included.

First, the Cars and Coffee (C2) of 5th NOV in Mt Pleasant was attended by only six BCCC members. Even the usual MGTD driver drove an SUV so he could pick up a dishwasher at Lowes, next to the venue. While it was not a bad weather day, there were two beautiful Mor-gan's present and an assortment of MG’s and Triumph’s, but not the usual crowd as the BCCC was having a post BCD meeting at some clandestine location on the Ashley River at the same time as C2!!

The next C2 was 12th NOV and there were only two BCCC cars present including a Chatter-ingham, Clatteringham, and Batteringram car owned by some French guy! C2 that day was chilly, short, and it rained on the way home!

There was a great outing to Mepkin Abbey on 19th NOV and about five BCCC cars were pre-sent along with eight clubbies. The tour was really interesting and the weather was fantas-tic!!! There were about eighty crèche models staged at the Abbey and they were each beauti-fully handcrafted cheches. The club members were asked to pick the best and the best will be announced in some future edition of the venerable Windscreen! It was a glorious day and all were pleased that they could drive top down in the morning dew!!

Ingredients

150 g unsalted butter , at room temperature),

plus extra for greasing

500 g self-raising flour , plus extra for dusting

500 g dried pitted dates

1 orange

2 chai tea bags

20 g bicarbonate of soda

350 g dark brown sugar

5 large free-range eggs

Chai Sticky Date Pudding with Toffee Sauce Lynn Rosato

“Decorate this rich, fragrant pudding simply with holly or, for a real wow factor,

drizzle with warmed brandy and carefully set it alight. ”

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

50 g golden syrup

75 g black treacle

TOFFEE SAUCE

125 g double cream

50 g unsalted butter

50 g dark brown sugar

30 g golden syrup

1 lug of brandy

Directions

Preheat the oven to 160C/gas 2-3 and place a tray of water in the bottom (this cre-

ates steam during cooking to keep the pudding moist). Butter and flour a 25cm bundt

tin and set aside.

Roughly chop the pitted dates, and zest the orange.

In a pan, bring 400ml of water to the boil, turn the heat off, add the tea bags and

leave to infuse for 3 minutes.

Discard the tea bags and bring back to the boil. Whisk in the bicarbonate of soda

and add the dates. Leave to one side to cool to room temperature.

Cream the butter and sugar in a food processor or with a hand-held mixer until in-

corporated, light and fluffy.

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla, orange zest, golden syrup and treacle un-

til just combined. Pour into the butter mixture in stages, beating until smooth each

time.

Sieve the flour and fold gently into the batter. Stir in the date mixture, then pour

into the bundt tin.

Bake for 1 hour, or until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to

cool in the tins for 5 minutes.

Pop all the sauce ingredients in a small pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat.

Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring, then remove from the heat.

Invert the pudding onto a platter and baste with a little of the sauce. Delicious

OK, It’s not a British Car By Dave Rosato

I had a 1962 190sl Mercedes in the late ‘70s. I bought it for $1,800. It was in an accident but after a couple years, mostly through grad school, I restored it. After putting nearly 60,000 miles on it, my priorities changed when I got married, built our house and had kids, and it was sold. Then in 2005 I got divorced and sold my busi-ness, again changing my priorities. First I got a Harley then the red 1958 190sl Mercedes. Now though, the eight-day windup clock in the dash sells for about what I bought the ‘62 190sl for. Well actually, getting my ‘58 MGA was in there someplace. I did a frame off restora-tion on the MGA about seven years ago and now it is time for the 190sl.

So a couple weeks ago I started taking the car apart. Bumpers, grill, exterior chrome then the interior.

Under the car I started drilling out rivets. Someone did a very poor restoration years ago and pop riveted several panels to the underside and the inside floor. They didn’t bother to remove the rusted panels. Fortunately a box of new sheet metal came with the car. It included sheet metal for the entire underside of the car.

The other day we had the garage ceiling spray foam insulated. So we had to move everything out, in-cluding the 190. So I made a nice comphy seat for Lynn, a milk crate, and a steering wheel, an adjusta-ble wrench and I towed her with the lawn mower..
