Prez Fezz - August

Well another jam-packed month has flown past with August proving to be challenging for

organisers.

First we had to move the Mt Joy date due to the amount of rain in the preceding weeks,

then there was a mad dash to set the trial out on the Saturday and ride Sunday. Thank you

to all who helped spread the word about the date change and to those who gave up their

time to set sections the day before, even if it was a week or two before Mr Ian P and Ian G (I

swear I put the date on face book).

Changing the date was the right decision as we were greeted with a glorious day at Mt Joy

and nobody I spoke to could find anything to complain about so thank you to the Bayles

Brothers for the use of this wonderful trials heaven and to all our observers for giving up your

time.

It was pleasing to see the return of Neil and Jenny from their big island tour, we had missed

you both over the past few months and we all wonder after hearing the stories. Just how

long before you take off again? Neil must have one of the most travelled trials bikes in

Australia.

On to the next week, and another major event for our club with the staging of Tim Mead’s

Brass Monkey ride.

For some time now Tim and I have been talking about holding a trail ride for trials bikes at

Moina, home of the Mead family retreat.

Well after a final banging of heads together, D-day finally arrived and we were all greeted

at ‘NOSTRESSERE’ for a wonderful weekend of riding and dining, and the odd lie or two over

a quiet drink, fronting up again Sunday for a gentle ride around the area. Well most of us….

one person was seen pushing his bike up the main road towards Cradle Mountain, seems he

was able to use more fuel than everyone else. But you did carry a chain saw for most of the

ride, Tim, so we should let you off ?? No way.

For those who missed out we had a miserable time with cold wet weather, cold food,

sleeping on the floor, all in bed by 8pm. These are all the stories the group made up over the

night to tell everyone else, so you would not want to come next year!! We have next year

booked out already so if you want to be part of this awesome weekend you need to now

wait until someone on the list dies or pulls out (think you could be waiting for a lot of people

to pass on).

To Tim and Vonette we cannot thank you enough for all that you and your family did to

make us feel so welcome. To Tim and Jacob the riding was spot on and every rider had a

story to tell family and friends when they left.

This has opened our eyes up to a new part of our club and we will be holding some one day

trail rides in future so stay tuned.

Well off to Cokers Road this Sunday to set another trial and return again the following

weekend to ride - golly, life’s tough at this time of the year!

See you all at the next trial Cokers Road Mathinna on the 15th

This newsletter is posted on the Trials Australia site. We can also send a copy of the monthly newsletter direct to your email address - If we don’t have your email address, let us know at [email protected]. Thanks Wendy for rolling off hard copies for new riders on trials days. Club Trials Photos for 2012: Have you bought your $10 CD of 800 selected photos from last year’s trials yet? Less that half has appeared on Facebook, so if any rider that thinks he/she has been missed out, they are probably on the CD. Thanks to those that have already purchased one, $160 has gone in the funds to run the 2014 national event and/or charity. See Mike Wellman at the next trial for your copy of these unique photos, they will be a lovely item of club history to show your grandchildren (sooner than you think), or would make great lightweight gifts to send overseas. Brass Monkey Weekend. An awesome time was had by all, except perhaps the 3 pigs who provided us with platefuls of succulent bacon to accompany the 4 dozen breakfast eggs…! With copious amounts of prizes awarded for such obscure reasons as ‘worst pool player’ and ‘most bruises’, enough food to feed an army, 23 happy campers roughing it on innersprung mattresses in front of 2 blazing log fires, and lots of money raised for a good cause, all participants acknowledge and thank Tim, Vonette, Jacob and Abby Mead for their outstanding hospitality and cooking skills, and Craig for his organizational prowess, what a truly great weekend!

Mt Joy Trial – 25 th August 2013 (Tas Championship Round 7) Report, Results & Photos

Despite all the August rain the sections had dried out well leading to some lower than expected scores. Kurt Pickering continued his good form to take out ‘A’ grade on just 23 marks. Good to see Peter Bayles having some company in ‘B’ grade & well done to Scotty taking out the win. Mike Amey had one of those dream days when everything went right & won ‘C+’ with a loss of just two marks. In ‘C’ grade the scores were all very close & just one five would push you down several positions, so well done to Mike Travica for a convincing win with 5 marks clear. The top two riders in clubman were on very low scores too with Jordon Perkins taking the win on 3 points from Chloe Bayles on 6 points.

There were some fairly fearsome rock steps in A & B grade & our evergreen Peter Bayles shows how it should be done on this one.

As always the A graders were working together with Kurt Pickering giving some security to Peter Lockhart as he successfully attempts the rock face.

Brooke Luscombe – as stylish as ever with just the right amount of body lean.

Steve Harris gives his rear suspension a pummeling. Either he was going very fast when he hit the log, or they don’t make rear springs like they used too, or…….……..no, we won’t go there!

Craig Ferrall looking well in control.

This was a rare sight on the day, Mike Amey with his foot down – only two dabs to win C+, what a great effort. Obviously trying very hard here – check out the chips spraying out from his back tyre as he tries to saw his way through the log!

Bradley Shadbolt put in some good rides, but with such a low scoring day he paid dearly for his couple of mistakes to finish 4th in C+. Interesting to note the back wheel is also clear of the log – nice bunny hop technique Brad.

Michael Bayles concentrating hard & keeping his feet on the pegs on his way to 4th in C grade.

SCOTTY HELLMAN (WELLMAN) – Mr August

In all the years that I have been involved with producing club magazines for The Pathfinders Trials Club in WA, then 2 stints at this one 20 years apart, I have deliberately avoided nepotism, hence my 3 ‘boys’ never had a mention apart from results. After 40 years I’m over it…lets break the rules for once, and hope I’m forgiven for telling you a bit about one of the junior Wellmans. Born in Armadale W.A. 34 years ago just 18 months after his brother Garry, Scott grew up on 25 sun-baked hungry snake-and-redback infested acres at Serpentine 40 kms south of Perth on a hobby farm where, out of necessity, we ate anything that grew in the paddocks or walked on them – pigs, chooks, a horse, goat, sheep ducks, calves, vegetables…we even had a milking cow to raise poddy calves. Indestructible plastic trikes were rapidly replaced by 2-wheelers, and a classic piece of super-8 film shows the very small boys riding a very large ladies bike down the 5 veranda steps so I think it’s in the genes. Their first ever paid job, aged 4 & 5, was skirting fleeces and being paid cash at the Woolbuyers. To turn hay bales in the paddock, Mike would load both offspring into the only farm vehicle we possessed – a Honda 250 trials outfit, and kick bales over until both boys fell asleep exhausted and dusty in the sidecar. They very soon graduated to driving it and dispensed with dad, but it was several years before the budget stretched to a TY80 which was loaded on to the trailer in 1986 along with Mike’s Tenere, the Honda TLR and two BMX bikes and towed across the Nullabor to a new life in the thankfully-cooler climate of Tasmania (sight unseen). I’ll keep the trials revival stuff for another day, suffice to say that Scott’s parents were so mean that they bought the boys a TY175 to share and made them repay every cent by encouraging them to compete in the morning trial, cook/sell lunch-time BBQ’s to the other riders, then ride again in the arvo. Their fledgling business was lucrative enough to finance a 2nd TY175 several weeks later. Not surprisingly the BBQ’s ceased soon after! Since then Scotty has owned a selection of steeds including a XR80 for mini-bike motocross, an XR 250, then his most memorable bike the CR500 which got him into adult motocross, unfortunately losing the State Thumper Open title on a tiebreak. He rode it at the Derwent Entertainment Centre supercross and says “on reflection it wasn’t the ideal bike, I busted myself up pretty bad (ribs) but it seemed like a good idea at the time”. The YZ400F came next, also memorable as he raced it in the MX Nationals at Penguin in 2002. Then 3 YZ426’s in quick succession followed by the YZ450F on which he had his “life’s most meaningful achievement”, finishing the insane Finke Desert Race 56th out of 500 entrants. A CRF450 took him to the 2009 Hattah where he came 39th out of 250 (so physically hard to ride four-and-a-half hours in sand). In 2010 we had an emotional reunion with Scott in a remote outback roadhouse (after our 3 years away on the narrowboat in UK) on our way to Alice Springs for another Finke. So we were there for his truly horrible prang on the KTM 530, where he was knocked unconscious and “rescued off the track by Superman and Batman”. Despite our fears that this gibberish was the result of brain damage, he really was assisted by 2 of the fanatical campers in full fancy dress who support this dusty flat-out 2 day race!! Scotty also advises do not

EVER wear a bum-bag full of tools, he thought he’d broken his back in the prang when he landed on it. His mate Leigh Breen and Scott were easy to spot in the Alice Springs campsite…the only 2 swags amongst the luxury motor-homes, Tassie boys-on-budget! Back to Tas to work, then three weeks later it was a return to the outback for another Hattah race. After making up about 30 places in his first lap, it was a case of hanging on as best he could with a motor that was slowly destroying itself. He now has a CRF450X Enduro bike and hopes to compete in the Victorian Wildwood event this November. Neil Berne’s Beta is responsible for getting Scott back into trials, and he’s now also pretty attached to Dylan’s old GasGas, choosing to ride B grade with a generous bit of coaching from Peter Bayles. Hobbies include 4WD, camping, kayaking, exploring new places, and trying to wear out his indefatigable 4year-old lab/heeler dog Munro. Scott came 349th out of 1500 in the 2013 Lonnie 10 footrace, and recently tried the exhausting but hilarious Relbia mud-run footrace. He loves the Aussie outback, was ‘very impressed with Switzerland on a recent Kontiki trip, was ‘blown away’ with a 3day houseboat party with a bunch of mates at Echuca where speedboats woke them as they flew past at 200kph. He’s visited all Aussie capital cities, been to America “pretty unreal, especially the Statue of Liberty”, Thailand (not fussed!), and worked in PNG aged 17 – what an eye-opener that was. After a 4 year apprenticeship and 3 further years at Tamar Designs/Tyco as a fitter-machinist, Scott drove to Kalgoorlie for a year on a gold mine construction site, then Hamilton Vic, working with a really good bunch of people at Mineral Sands mine construction. It was here that his long-suffering parents and a copious amount of workmates saw him break his wrist riding a steer at a rodeo…(another ‘seemed like a good idea at the time’ moment??) A year in Karratha slots in there somewhere too, as does a broken leg and thumb. Garry and Scott purchased their own set of crutches at one stage as they figured if one wasn’t on them, the other was…who’d be a mum? Scott has now worked at Purefood (ex-Monds and Affleck), Tassie’s biggest egg producer for 4 years where he is the Maintenance Officer. The trials club? “A great bunch of friendly people, I’ve had a really good time this last couple of years, Peter Bayles is always willing to give me a hand but I’m still hoping to knock him off his perch!! I was lucky enough to win a trials trophy in 1992 then haven’t had a win for 20 years”. So I hope we can be forgiven for sharing this with you all, its certainly been an interesting journey with father and 2 sons, never a dull moment, and according to my prophetic recent musical birthday card, “you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet”. Moira.

Instructions on how to find the next trial at Cokers Road near Mathinna How to get to there is a bit more complex than usual, although most riders have probably already been there before & so won’t be too fazed.

If coming from Launceston or the North West Coast, you can follow instructions from Point A. Don’t rely on the C grade markers though, as the following notes were written for a previous trial & the markers will probably be long gone.

For the southerners, head for Fingal & then follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.
