GOALS
To understand the safe response to an anhydrous ammonia spill or leak
![Page 3: PREVIEW OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO ANHYDROUS AMMONIA INCIDENTS](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062316/587db44b1a28abae2f8b6c0f/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
OVERVIEW
Anhydrous Ammonia is used in farming and industry
Farming it is injected (knifed) into the ground as a fertilizer
Industry uses it as a refrigerant and in chemical processing
![Page 4: PREVIEW OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO ANHYDROUS AMMONIA INCIDENTS](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062316/587db44b1a28abae2f8b6c0f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
HEALTH HAZARDS
Rapidly fatal at concentrations of 5,000 to 10,000 ppm
Immediately fatal at concentrations exceeding 10,000 ppm
![Page 5: PREVIEW OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO ANHYDROUS AMMONIA INCIDENTS](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062316/587db44b1a28abae2f8b6c0f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
TREATMENT
Basic Life Support Maintain airway and give oxygen as necessaryMonitor for pulmonary edema and shockFlush eyes if necessary with normal salineFor ingestion if patient can swallow give 5 ml/kg
water up to 200 mlDo not attempt to neutralize
![Page 6: PREVIEW OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO ANHYDROUS AMMONIA INCIDENTS](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062316/587db44b1a28abae2f8b6c0f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
FIREFIGHTING
Extinguishing Media:Small Fire: Dry chemical or CO2
Large Fire: Water spray, fog, or foam
Do not spray directly on liquid ammonia

CHEMICAL DANGERS
Ammonia is corrosive to copper and galvanized surfaces
When heated it decomposes it emits toxic fumes and nitrogen oxides
Liquid ammonia will attack some forms of plastics, rubber, and coatings
![Page 8: PREVIEW OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO ANHYDROUS AMMONIA INCIDENTS](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062316/587db44b1a28abae2f8b6c0f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
PHYSICAL DANGERS
Ammonia gas is lighter than airWhen compressed liquefied ammonia gas
escapes a cylinder and comes in contact with moisture will form ammonia fog and remain low to the ground
In enclosed spaces gas will quickly become dangerous

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
OSHA 1910.111Releases over 100 lbs. must be reported to
National Response CenterSubject to reporting requirements under SARA
Title IIIEPCRA extremely hazardous substance TQ 500

STREET DRUGS
Anhydrous Ammonia is used as a component in making Methamphethine
Users have been required to increase security to prevent theft
Stolen Ammonia is easily transported as it containers use the same fittings as Propane
Consumer propane tanks may have a green tarnish on valves as ammonia reacts with the brass

CONFINED SPACES
Entry into confined spaces that may contain ammonia is considered by OSHA a permit required confined space entry
