Louisiana’s largest outdoor show takes over the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, March 9–11, to showcase the latest and greatest prod-ucts the outdoor community has to offer.

The 33rd Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show will fea-ture more than 200 vendors, many with special show-only deals and entertainment for the whole family.

Two buildings will be filled with hunting, fish-ing, camping and farm equipment from exhibi-tors across the Gulf Coast, with outdoor guides and trip planners available to answer your ques-tions and help you book your dream excursion.

There will also be a giant outdoor display of boats, motors, ATVs and personal watercraft from the area’s leading dealers.

“The big addition to this year’s show is our RV section,” said show director Jack Fisher. “And the boat exhibits are about 50 percent larger than they were last year.

“We’ve also expanded our tractor and lawn-mower section.”

The Sportsmen’s Show has no shortage of fun activities for adults and kids alike.

“We’ll have Midway carnival rides, a rock-climb-ing wall, bungee jumping, a live trout pond, face painting and — back by popular demand — monster truck rides,” said Fisher.

Special events include the inaugural Louisiana Sportsman Open bass tournament, where anglers will vie for a guaranteed 10,000 top prize. The two-day competition, sponsored by Skeeter and Yamaha, will be a two-man team event with the top 20 teams all receiving checks.

“It will be a Bassmaster Classic style weigh-in,” said Fisher. “Teams will enter with their boats on trailers and will walk onto the stage to weigh their fish.”

Bring your best fishing buddy and join the fun. Participants must pre-register online at

lasportsmenshow.com and attend a captain’s meeting on March 7 at Cabela’s.

The Big Buck Contest returns this year to award prizes to the top scoring deer in seven different categories.

A random drawing will also reward one lucky hunter just for entering the contest.

“Bring any scoreable buck, and you’re eligible to win a brand-new Yamaha ATV,” said Fisher.

The first-annual Louisiana Sportsman Jam-balaya Cook-off will fittingly take place in the “Jambalaya Capital of the World.”

Open to anyone with a mean jambalaya recipe, the entry fee is $150, and a member of the cooking team must attend a March 1 meeting. Several main ingredients will be provided, and winners will take away cash and trophies.

“Locals from the Ascension Parish area will judge the cook-off,” said Fisher.

Young cooks also have a chance to show off their budding culinary skills in the mini-pot competition for a nominal $10 fee. Log on to the website for a full list of rules and to down-load the registration form.

The Splash Dogs exhibition is not only a dock-diving competition for dogs to test their skills; it’s 100 percent fun for dogs, their owners and everyone watching. Dogs of all breeds are wel-come to take part in this great new sport.

“For the dog lovers out there, I think this could be big,” said Fisher. “Bring your dog and let them compete.”

And there’s no reason anyone should leave the show hungry. Local restaurants will be on hand with some fantastic offerings. Guests will also be able to enjoy samples from the Jambalaya Cook-off.

Don’t miss out! Make plans now to be at this year’s show.

Big Buck conteStIf you’re a deer hunter, odds are you targeted a buck most of the

times you stepped into the woods this winter. If you’re a good hunter, you may have crossed paths with that buck.If you’re both lucky and good, that buck was be big enough to mount and

preserve for posterity. That being the case, you’ll definitely want to enter the rack in the 2012

Louisiana Sportsman Big Buck Contest, to be held at the Louisiana Sports-men’s Show in March.

This year’s contest will feature seven categories:• Best Louisiana Gun• Best Louisiana Bow• Best Out-of-State Gun• Best Out-of-State Bow• Ladies• Youth• Muzzleloader/Crossbow

In addition, all deer entered in the contest will be included in a random drawing for a Yahama 350 Grizzly.

The highest-scoring Louisiana Gun buck and Louisiana Bow buck will also each win a free executive hunt at Mississippi's McKenna Ranch, and the win-ner of each category will take home a Nikon ProStaff 550 rangefinder.

Since the contest occurs so soon after the deer season, many hunters will have to retrieve the horns from their taxidermist before the event, and that shouldn’t ever be a problem. Taxidermists don’t typically install the antlers until very late in the mounting process.

All deer will receive official Boone & Crockett scores.Bucks killed during the 2011-12 season are eligible for entry. Additionally,

bucks killed during the 2010-11 season that have not been officially scored are also eligible.

Bucks killed during prior seasons may be brought in for scoring and display, but they are not eligible for contest prizes.

Contest rules —• Legally killed bucks shot during the 2010-

11 and 2011-12 seasons are eligible for entry in any of the seven categories.

• All bucks beyond the 60-day drying period will receive an official B&C score.

• Any buck killed within the previous 60 days will be scored and entered in the contest, but the score will not be official.

• Only free-range whitetails from any of the 50 U.S. states are eligible.

• Bucks killed with primitive arms that aren’t true muzzleloaders will be entered in the Gun categories.

• Youth category entrants must have been 15 or younger at the time of the kill.

• A random drawing will be held among all bucks entered in the contest with the winner receiving a Yamaha ATV.

• Bucks killed before the contest period may still be brought in for scoring, but will not be eligible for the contest or the random drawing.

• Bucks must be brought in during show hours Friday or before 6 p.m. Saturday to be eligible for the contest and random drawing.

• Racks must remain at the show until 2 p.m. Sunday, and may not be removed before then.

• Louisiana Sportsman reserves the right to add or alter rules at its discretion.

Jambalayacook-off

Gonzales is the undisputed Jambalaya Capitol of the World, and the 2012 cooking season kicks off with the Louisiana Sportsman Jambalaya Cook-off to be held March 9-11 at the Lamar-Dixon Center.

The cook-off, held in conjunction with the Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show, is open to anyone wishing to see how their special twist on jam-balaya compares to other recipes.

Competition will be held all three days, with Sunday being the championship heat. Entry fee is $150, and a member of the cooking team must attend the cook’s meeting on March 1 at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center’s Big Sky Café.

All finalists will win Sportsman plaques, with the top three finishers winning handmade trophies and cash. There also will be an optional cooks’ kitty.

Ingredients to be provided to cooks include 7 pounds of pork, 3 pounds of sausage, 5 pounds of onions and 5 pounds of rice, along with cooking oil, bell pepper, green onions, fresh garlic and celery.

Cooks must provide their own seasonings; however, coloring agents are prohibited from the competition.

The first heat will take place between 1 and 4 p.m. on March 9, followed by three heats on Saturday. The finals will be held between 6 and 9 a.m. on Sunday.

There also will be a mini-pot competition for young cooks, in which the top three partici-pants will receive custom Sportsman plaques. Entry into this category is $10.

Two new events at this year’s Sportsmen’s Show will hit the bulls-eye with bowhunters.

Cabela’s is sponsoring both a Kid’s Shoot on Saturday and a 3D shoot on Sunday, according to Christine Pocorello, events and marketing man-ager for Cabela’s.

“It’s going to be a blast,” she said. “There will be something for archery shooters of all ages.”

Saturday’s Kid’s Shoot will have trained instructors on hand to demonstrate proper shooting technique to young-sters. A $1 fee gets each youngster five shots, and all proceeds benefit the Leadership Ascension Response Kitchen (LARK).

Bows to participate in the shoot are provided.

On Sunday, shooters who have sharp-ened their skills will want to participate in the 3D Archery Shoot.

Entry fee is $25 per person. Half of that goes back to the winners, and the other half benefits LARK.

The 3D shoot will have separate men’s, youths’ and women’s categories, and entrants must supply their own bows.

LARK is an organization designed to feed communities during times of disaster. For more information, visit ascensionlark.org.

Winter is drawing to a close, and dog own-ers are looking for ways to engage their dogs physically and psychologically. As duck season closes, retrievers are looking for something to chase. House dogs are tired of being indoors,

and they too are looking for something to do.This is what prompted Tony Reed to develop

Splash Dogs, which allows dogs to stretch out and see how far they can jump. And this dock-jumping competition is fast becoming one of America’s most-popular outdoor events.

Dogs compete for distance, diving from a dock into a 40-foot-long pool. No other out-door event brings families and people together better or puts more smiles on faces than Splash Dog events.

“Yes, we add an element of competition, but we’re more about the family fun,” Reed said. “We have a set of rules, but we’ll bend them. If a dog doesn’t quite make it one time, it’s not going to hurt to give them back the toy and let them try to experience getting off the dock and feeling confident.

“It’s a great experience to watch people hav-ing fun with their dogs.”

Pet owners travel to these events from all over the region to compete. It’s a great new sport that everyone loves.

Competition is open to dogs of all breeds and ages, from lean Vizslas to shaggy Newfound-lands, all the Jack Russell terriers and, of course, Labradors. All dogs must be kennelled or leashed.
