But now I’m going to be immoral; nowI mean to show things really as they are,

Not as they ought to be: for I avow,That till we see what’s what in fact, we’re far

From much improvement with that virtuous ploughWhich skims the surface, leaving scarce a scar

Upon the black loam long manured by Vice,Only to keep its corn at the old price.

Every individual needs revolution, inner division, over- Throw of the exiting order, and renewal, but not by forcingthese things upon his neighbours under the hypocriticalcloak of Christian love or the sense of social responsibility

or any of the other beautiful euphemisms for unconsciousurges to personal power. Individual self-reflection, return of the individual to the ground of human nature, to his owndeepest being with its individual and social destiny—here isthe beginning of a cure for the blindness which reigns at thepresent hour.

Jung

Thus the soul, since it is immortal and has been born manytimes, and has seen all things both here and in the other world, has learned everything that is. So we need not besurprised if it can recall the knowledge of virtue or anything

else which, as we see, it once possessed. All nature is akin, and the soul has learned everything so that when a man hasrecalled a single piece of knowledge—learned it in ordinarylanguage—there is no reason why he should not find out allthe rest, if he keeps a stout heart and does not grow weary of the search, for seeking and learning are in fact nothing butrecollection.

There probably exists in the mental life of the individual notonly what he has experienced him self, but also what hebrought with him at birth, fragments of a phylogenetic

origin, an archaic heritage.

What if the entire intrauterine existence of the highermammals were only a replica of the type of existence whichcharacterized that aboriginal . . . period, and birth itself nothing but a recapitulation on the part of the individual of

the great catastrophe which at the time of the recession of the ocean forced so many animals, and certainly our ownanimal ancestors, to adapt themselves to a land existence. . . to renounce gill breathing and provide themselves withorgans for the respiration of air.

Thinking in pictures. . . in some way, too. . . approximatesmore closely to unconscious processes than does thinking in words, and it is unquestionably older than the latter bothontogenetically and phylogenetically.

Therefore, if we look far enough back in the stream of time. . . judging from the social habits as man as he nowexists. . . the most probable view is that primaeval manaboriginally lived in small communities, each with as many

wives as he could support and obtain, whom he would have jealously guarded against all other men. Or he may have lived with several wives by himself, like the Gorilla; for allthe natives “agree that but one male is seen in a band; whenthe young male grows up, a contest takes place for mastery, and the strongest, by killing and driving out the others, establishes himself as the head of the community.”* The younger males, being thus expelled and wandering about would, when at least successful in finding a partner, prevent

too close interbreeding within the limits of the same family.

The harems of the southern elephant seal likewise involve theseparation of the females into groups when they go ashore tohave their young. Those observed by Matthews in SouthGeorgia contained from 2 to 30 females per male, the averagebeing between 12 and 20. Here again the males havingadjacent harems fight violently in defense of their propertyand drive away bachelor bulls that frequent the beach

around the edges of the harems. When one of thosebachelors approaches, the harem bull throws back his head, roars while inflating his proboscis, and opening his mouthutters a series of muffled bellows. Usually this display of might is enough to scare off the intruder, but sometimesthere is a fight. Then, face-to-face, the two males rear up ashigh as they can, mouths open and proboscises inflated, trying to tear at each other with their upper canine teeth. If one of the animals loses his balance while fighting, the other

throws himself upon the foe, biting him in the back andneck; the wounds thus inflicted may be six inches across.

In the rites of the Kakaua and the Tani the lads aresupposed to be swallowed by a monster who is induced bythe sacrifice of many pigs to vomit them up again. In

spewing them out of his maw he bites or scratches them, and the wound is circumcision. These and similar examplesof which an abundance has been quoted by Frazer andothers speak in favor of the primal meaning of the pubertyritual that boys are supposed to be eaten and then un-swallowed. But the educational purpose of these rituals isto intimidate the young man and to frighten them awayfrom the temptation to attack the generation of fathers.

The chiefs of the Upper Uelle invariably had a great number

of so-called wives. N’yangara, the paramount chief of theMangbettou, had no fewer than 500. . . these ladies, whoseages ranged from twelve to thirty, all resided in a villagebuilt around the principal residence of the chief, and in thatsettlement no man except the personal attendants to thechief was allowed to reside.

Eventually, however, when handed a pipe of tobacco, he

disclosed the fact that both his hands had been cut off atthe wrist. Being the son of a powerful chief, I naturallyasked him for an explanation. He then told me that hishands had been cut off by the command of his father, whohad suspected him of an intrigue with one of his wives.

In one case the Mangbettou chief N’yangara had reason tosuspect an intrigue between one of his sons and one of hismore useful wives. . . the son was brought a prisoner and

bound to one of the big poles supporting the huge grassbuilding which served as a council hall. The woman wasnext produced, and was obliged, on pain of death, tomutilate her co-offender. The trophy was nailed to theerring lady’s doorway, where it remained as long as the woman continued to be a member of the community.
