• WHO estimated that

• globally over 450 million people suffer from mental disorders.

• Currently mental and behavioural disorders account for about 12 percent of the global burden of diseases.

• This is likely to increase to 15 percent by 2020.

• Major proportions of mental disorders come from low and middle income countries. *

The concept of Manas Roga in Ayurveda

• Generally for all types of mental disorders,

• Alpasattwa (weak mind),

• Manovahasrota (channels conveying Manas/conveyers of Manas),

• Manasa dosha viz., Rajas and Tamas and

• Tridosha

are said to be responsible.

• Alpasatwa which is the most important component is indicative of premorbid personality.

• Manas roga are manifested by disturbance in Sattva if sattva is overshadowed by Rajas or Tamas Guna.

• Achara Rasayana told in the classics has a direct influence in maintaining the mental and spiritual well being.

• सत्यवाददनमक्रोधं ननवतृ्त ंमद्यमथैनुात ्| अदहसंकमनायासं प्रशान्तं प्रप्रयवाददनम ्||

• जऩशौचऩरं धीरं दानननत्यं तऩस्ववनम ्| देवगोब्राह्मणाचाययगुरुवदृ्धाचयने रतम ्||

• आनशृवंयऩरं ननत्यं ननत्यं करुणवेददनम ्| समजागरणववप्नं ननत्यं ऺीरघतृाशशनम ्||

• देशकाऱप्रमाणऻं युस्ततऻमनहङ्कृतम ्| शवताचारमसङ्कीणयमध्यात्मप्रवणेस्न्ियम ्||

• उऩाशसतारं वदृ्धानामास्वतकानां स्जतात्मनाम ्| धमयशावरऩरं प्रवद्यान्नरं ननत्यरसायनम ्||

• गुणैरेतै् समुददतै् प्रयुङ्तते यो रसायनम ्| रसायनगुणान ्सवायन ्यथोततान ्समश्नुते || (इत्याचाररसायनम ्| ) |

Sadvritta-part of Achar Rasayana• A set of virtuous acts are mentioned in the context of

Sadvritta (good conducts) by following which a person attains Deerghayu (long life) .

• So those acts are also to be considered under AcharaRasayana.

• The features of Hitayu are also similar to components of Achara Rasayana and Sadvritta.

• One who incorporates these Sadvritta and Achara Rasayana in day to day life will attain Hitayu and Deerghayu.

• तद्ध्यनुनतष्ठन ् युगऩत ्सम्ऩादयत्यथयद्वयमारोग्यशमस्न्ियप्रवजयं चेनत;** Ch. Su. 8/18

DIET- AAHARA

• 'Aahar sambhava Vastu Rogashcha Aaharsambhava‘...

• The mental factor of a man is reflected by the type of food he takes.

• In Bhagavatgeeta also we find the references regarding the three types of food like Satvika, Rajasika and Tamasika.

ऩाऩं कमेनत दशधा कायवाङ्मनसैवत्यजेत|्|*

It should be control by an individual with mind, body and speech to increase the sattva..

DINACHARYA

Satwavajaya chikitsa

• सत्त्वावजय्- ऩुनरदहतेभ्योऽथेभ्यो मनोननग्रह् ||*

Ahita:- Does not carry any special meaning, it just conveys that something is unwholesome to the other.

Artha:-

• Artha can be either panchedriyartha or mano Artha or anything that can be perceived by sattva can also be included in this category.

• Mano Nigraha – means control of mind.

• Asatmendriyartha samyoga is regarded as one of the principal causes of disease. So, avoidance of Ati, Hina, Mithya yoga of chintya, vicharya, uhya, dhyeya and sankalpa should serve to cure the Psychiatric disorders.

• “self control of mind” is one of the most difficult tasks and warrants a perfect combination of desire, determination and dedication.

• It can be achieved as per Lord krishna in Bhagavadgeetha through practice of detachment.

Panchkarma & Rasayana

• हृद्वणयशुद््ध् ऺुत्तषृ्णा काऱे वेगप्रवतयनम ्||बुद्धीस्न्ियमन्शुद््धमायरुतवयानुऱोमता | सम्यस्ग्वररततशऱङ्गानन .....*

• दीघयमायु् वमनृत ंमेधामारोग्यं तरुण ंवय् | प्रिावणयववरौदाय ंदेहेस्न्ियबऱं ऩरम ्|| **

YOGA

• The most important benefit of Yoga is physical and mental equilibrium.

• योगो मोऺप्रवतयक् ||*

• मोऺो रजस्तमोऽभावात ्बऱवत्कमसुङ्क्ऺयात ्|**

• So it is useful in prevention of Manas Roga.

Conclusion

• In today's lifestyle of hurry worry and curry, stress is increasing day by day.

• Modern medicines are good for short term treatment but having many untoward effects and having their own limitations.

• Ayurveda and yoga if practiced in daily life has both preventive as well as curative effect.

• In fact Aachar rasayana is of greater relevance in today's highly mobile society than it was when first proposed by our ancient Aacharya.
