MORNING | 10:45-12:00 pm
The Science of Addiction & RecoveryKathy Miller – OCM BOCES
The Science of Addiction and Recovery is a curriculum developed by the Faces and Voices of Recovery intended to provide individuals with a better understand of addiction and recovery. The workshop will explore the neuroscience of addictions and recovery, the impact of addiction on the brain, and the science behind all of this. While the course includes some technical information about the brain, the target audience is laypeople, not medical professionals or scientists. One of the goals of the class is to help remove the stigma attached to addiction by focusing on similarities between it and other diseases.
The Cutting Edge: Understanding & Addressing Non-Suicidal Self-injury in YouthJanis Whitlock – Cornell University
Self-injury is intentionally hurting the body (e.g. cutting, burning etc.) but without suicidal intent. Because it often looks like a suicidal gesture, it tends to evoke fear and confusion. Its very nature seems to defy deep instinctual human drives for self-preservation as well as strong social
taboos related to self-inflicted injury. It is, after all, quite puzzling. Why would someone choose to cut up or otherwise hurt his/her body? Why would they do this in a way that looks like a suicide attempt but then insist that it actually has nothing to do with suicide at all? How do we understand this, let alone effectively respond to it? This workshop will address these questions and more. As a result of participating, participants will be able to: identify key features of self-injury epidemiology and vectors for contagion; understand core principles and practices in effective self-injury detection and intervention; discuss implications of the above for development of protocols and intervention strategies; and identify useful NSSI resources (articles, books, websites).
Complementary Practices for a Healthy Mindset: Oils, Yoga, Reiki & Body SystemsKim Guzalak – Young Living Essential Oils Independent Distributor
This workshop will focus on creating a healthy mindset using essential oils, yoga and Reiki. We will also discuss some simple techniques that can be implemented into a daily routine and the positive effect this can have on the body!
Emerging Trends in Online Gambling: An Increased Risk for YouthStelianos Canallatos– New York Council on Problem Gambling
The landscape of online gambling is rapidly changing, but why are youth at an increased risk? This training will answer that question starting with a brief overview of problem gambling, the increased risks associated with underage gambling, an in-depth discussion of the emerging trends of online gambling, and how to help keep youth safe.

Tolerance Development & Overdose in Opiate/Opioid AddictionNathan Rauscher – Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare
This session will discuss the development of tolerance to opiates. It will also include how changes in use can lead to overdose. Participants will receive this information within the context of changes to one agency’s client demographics over the past decade. This course will also examine overdose prevention strategies, including Narcan.
Presenting the Alcohol Literacy ChallengeStephanie Meeker – Farnham Family Services
The Alcohol Literacy Challenge™ (ALC) is an Institute of Medicine (IOM) Model “Universal” underage and binge drinking prevention program. It is the first classroom-based alcohol prevention lesson that challenges students’ beliefs about the effects of drinking alcohol. It combines the latest media literacy approaches to alcohol marketing with bar laboratory research showing that most of the experience a person calls “being drunk” is a result of that person’s beliefs, not the chemical effects of alcohol. ALC teaches students both the real, physical effects of consuming alcohol and the placebo-caused social & emotional effects people associate with drinking. It uses media literacy techniques to demonstrate how alcohol marketing can produce strongly held positive beliefs about drinking. When students learn these concepts, both changes in their expectancies about alcohol and actual reductions in drinking occur. Changed alcohol expectancies are a key factor in predicting long-term alcohol usage patterns.
Disordered Eating & Body Image in Today’s SocietyTiffany Gentile – Counseling & Healing Arts of Oswego County, Inc.
This workshop will discuss what disordered eating is, how it relates to eating disorders and addictive personalities as well as body image. Our society has created image “molds” of what people should look like. Those molds influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviors both positively and negatively. This workshop will focus on the negative consequences of society’s body image expectations and the actions some take to fulfill their perceived expectations. Real cases of disordered eating will be presented.
The Opiate Epidemic and Federal Criminal StatutesRichard Southwick – The United States Department of Justice
Federal law enforcement is uniquely equipped to investigate and prosecute drug trafficking organizations operating on the state, regional, national and international level. Federal criminal statutes prohibit conspiracy, smuggling and distribution of illegal drugs and seek accountability for those supplying opiates resulting in death. The current epidemic demands new responses to drug trafficking and federal law enforcement is adapting to the challenges faced by communities, families and those seeking to free themselves from addiction.
NARCAN TRAINING | 2:15-3:00 pm
**Optional training**Narcan Syracuse Behavioral Health will be providing training on how to administer Narcan in a narcotic overdose emergency situation. Narcan™ (naloxone) is a prescription medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose.
