CCL HistoryWhen CCL was established in 1935, it originally supplied products for the electrical transmission and distribution industry. Diversification into the construction market came as a result of the development of a wedge type connector which was universally adopted for use in prestressed concrete. The prestressing of concrete by means of CCL’s proprietary systems of cables, allows full utilisation of the high compressive strength of this material to construct large span structures beyond the limits of conventional construction. From this point onwards the Company invested heavily in this technology.

During the 1970s, CCL increased its product range with the introduction of bridge bearings and pre-tensioning materials and equipment. It was also at this time that the Company carried out the first post-tensioning of slabs within buildings in the UK. This type of application was to become the main focus of the business, complemented by the post-tensioning of bridges and other civil structures.

Recognising the importance of servicing markets at a local level, in the early 1980s CCL began its worldwide expansion. It established subsidiaries and partnerships in the United States, Africa, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and the Gulf, completing many successful civil and buildings projects in these areas.

Today, CCL is an independently owned, private company which continues to pursue policies of innovation and progress through ongoing research and development programs.

CCL QualityCCL has invested heavily in its manufacturing, engineering, research and development and operations to ensure unrivalled quality, supply and service.

Quality in SupplyCCL’s products and services meet the latest international standards including those set down by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the UK Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels (CARES). Its systems have been tested and approved to the requirements of the latest FIP “Recommendations for acceptance of post-tensioning systems”.

The European Technical Approval Guide, ETAG 013, requires that only ETAG approved systems which carry a CE marking can be used on structures designed using Eurocode 2. CCL’s post-tensioning systems have been tested and approved to ETAG 013 and carry the CE mark.

CCL is an ISO registered company that complies with BS EN ISO 9001. All products are designed individually to exacting standards using high specification materials. System design uses the latest FEA techniques and is backed up by an extensive testing procedure. All components are tested prior to despatch and are batch referenced to ensure full traceability.

In its attempt to minimise environmental impact and promote best practice, CCL (GB) has achieved ISO 14001: 2004 Environmental Management System.

Derviche Haddad PPB Structures sal Established in 1890, the name Derviche Haddad has been known and respected within the construction industry in Lebanon for more than 120 years, acquiring a reputation for quality, reliability and engineering excellence. The Company became involved in the prestressing of concrete and precast works in the late 1950s, and since that time has carried out a great number of prestressed concrete applications within many different types of structures in the Middle East.

In 1995 Derviche Haddad became the Middle Eastern agent for CCL, and joined the CCL group of companies in 2000.

In 2007, Derviche Haddad joined forces with PPB Structures sal, a successful company specialised in prestressed concrete construction in Lebanon since 1982, to form Derviche Haddad PPB Structures sal.

Today, as a subsidiary of CCL, Derviche Haddad PPB Structures is Lebanon’s leading specialist contractor in post-tensioning and related engineering.

Located at the company’s premises in Lebanon is CCL Engineering, CCL’s principal design facility. Using the latest 3D parametric modelling and finite element analysis software it provides specialised design services for the entire CCL group of companies, its distributors, agents, licensees and clients around the world. Situated at the same site is a large materials distribution facility. This combination allows Derviche Haddad PPB Structures to provide a complete design service, material supply and full on-site technical assistance for its clients.

Products and equipment used in the Company’s post-tensioning and pre-tensioning activities are sourced from CCL’s major production unit in the UK, where the focus on quality and continuous improvement has produced significant investment in automation, resulting in superior product performance.

CCL Vertical PT CCL completed the highest residential building in Michigan, USA, which featured vertical post-tensioning in the shear walls to resist lateral loads.

CCL Value EngineeringThe Morocco Mall shopping centre was the first post-tensioned building in Morocco and includes more than 250 shops and restaurants, a 400-seat cinema and a one million litre aquarium. The initial hollow core design of the project struggled to meet structural and construction requirements. CCL presented a value engineering design which was the only solution able to overcome the problems caused by the long cantilevers, while remaining within both budget and construction lead time.

CCL Sustainable High-Rise CCL undertook the design, supply and installation of post-tensioning systems on Strata SE1, in the centre of London. This is the world’s first high rise building to include three wind turbines in the roof which will deliver part of the building’s energy requirements. The use of post-tensioned slabs reduced CO2 emissions by 2000kg.

CCL Overcomes ConstraintsCCL post-tensioning systems have been used onthe new Sidra Medical and Research Centre inDoha. The project presented a number of architectural, structural and mechanical challenges including the need for long spans, clearances and vibration control, which CCL was able to successfully overcome.

CCL Crack PreventionCCL designed, supplied and supervised the installation of the post-tensioning of the walls of four desalination tanks near to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The CCL unbonded system was used to remove tension from the concrete walls and so eliminate cracks to prevent leakage.

CCL Rapid Response CCL carried out the post-tensioning of the Jamarat Bridge at Mina, near Mecca. This consisted of four segmental bridges on top of one another, each spanning 100 metres. In addition to supplying post-tensioning systems meeting the latest international standards, CCL was able to mobilise a large fleet of high quality equipment at short notice in order to ensure the smooth running of this enormous project.

CCL Floor MaximisationSituated in the UAE, Marina 101 will be the world’s tallest hotel tower. CCL slabs have been used to maximise the number of floors within the building envelope. For the same building height, additional floors were included, to create more rentable space and provide the client with a substantial financial advantage.
