Press release:
Sheer Madness: From Federal Prosecutor to Federal Prisoner - Andrew
McKenna’s Memoir recounts one man’s journey from the heights of the Justice
Department to the throes of addiction.
ALBANY, N.Y. – Former U.S. Justice Department attorney, Andrew McKenna’s new
memoir, “Sheer Madness: From Federal Prosecutor to Federal Prisoner,”
chronicles his life, from humble upbringings in upstate New York, to the military, law
school, and ultimately the U.S. Justice Department. Mr. McKenna writes about his
struggles with depression, prescription drugs, and heroin, and what fueled this rising
star to rob a half dozen banks in New York and Vermont.
"There are former bank robbers who have written books. There are former Justice
Department prosecutors who have written books. And there are former federal
prisoners who have written books,” said Richard Stratton, author of Altered States of
America and former High Times editor. “But Andrew McKenna is the only man I know
of who has done it all: been a Special Prosecutor for the Department of Justice; been
a bank robber; and served time in federal prison. He's now written an amazing, tell-
all book about his multi-phased life. It’s a must read for anyone who cares to know
of the perils of prescription drug use.”

SHEER MADNESS
From Federal Prosecutor to Federal Prisoner
A Memoir by Andrew McKenna
About the Author
Andrew McKenna
Andrew McKenna, a high school dropout, served in both the United States Air
Force and as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
Mr. McKenna was a rising star who served as a Special Assistant United
States Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.
After serving five years in a Federal prison, Mr. McKenna has dedicated his life
to spreading the message of the catastrophic dangers of opiate use and
abuse, and the devastating impact that results from untreated depression.
Andrew now travels the country speaking at schools, colleges, and
professional organizations, sharing his story to assist others in need.
In addition to other personal writing projects, Andrew does legal research and
writing for attorneys in the Albany area and Lake Placid.
Mr. McKenna now lives in upstate New York with his partner Dawn and their
children. He enjoys spending time with his family, including his two sons from
a previous marriage. Andrew is currently working on a second memoir.
“SHEER MADNESS”
"It will change you. You will never be the same."
At just 16 years of age, when a grizzled Californian drug dealer spoke those
words of warning, there was no way Andrew McKenna could know that a few
decades later, while embroiled in a losing custody battle, heroin would
become the most seductive and destructive force in his life.
“Sheer Madness” is a reflection and a reminder. A reflection on Mr. McKenna’s
multi-faceted life, one of great ambition and success, but also great tragedy-
and a reminder that regardless of one's personal background, life can be a
slippery slope, and while the ride down can be exhilarating, it's the climb back
up that truly defines us.
