® “Pressing Opportunity”

It’s amazing. Things are the toughest at times, but somehow you find the will to hold on to the project you believe in. As time goes by, opportunities can arise and you must be ready for anything. Then, it is a beautiful thing when others start to believe and more opportunities are created.

All of us in this area are about to experience some dreams becoming a reality and major opportunities developing before our own eyes. I personally dreamed of this time, and now it is coming to fruition. It started out with local promoters and venues bringing national acts to our hometown. Radio stations teaming up with venues to expose local talent on a broader scale. Then, local arts councils teaming up with local bands to present their music during a first ever Houmapalooza. Now, Percy Miller a.k.a. Master P, Romeo, and No Limit Forever Records are teaming up with local business people and local talent to distribute Houma, LA worldwide. If you ever doubted the possibility of pursuing your dreams, just look around to your surrounding area and pay attention to what is happening. This area is about to explode.

We all need to support one another to continue developing a strong and lasting industry that we will all be a part of. There is enough business and opportunity for all that are interested, involved, and take this industry seriously, but not for granted. Be a part of the foundation and support the movement. We are gonna build an entertainment empire that we all can enjoy and make a living doing so. There is no limit to what we can do.

Passion [pash-uhn] - a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything.

I remember days of sitting in bars all night watching people and striking up conversations with strangers. One of my favorite things to ask people was, “What’s your passion? What would you do the rest of your life with your time if you didn’t have to make money?” Some people couldn’t answer. Some people had to think about it. Conversation ended there for those, but if they answered immediately, then we had something to work with. I heard it all; music, art, dancing, photography, writing, making people laugh, the Bible, acting, math, business, accounting… seriously, I’ve heard it all. I would end up having the best conversations with these people and usually make a friend out of the night. You see, all my life I’ve been passionate about at least one thing. They’ve changed over the years, but there’s

always been that driving force behind everything I do. Now, this passion definitely made me throw caution to the wind and perhaps not make the best decisions in my life, from time to time, but I am where I am now and I like where that it…. for now. I’ve turned down “normal” jobs with stability, I’ve ruined relationships, and I’ve lost a lot of money following my passions. I quit school because of it. But again, I’m still am where I am now, which is why I tell people all the time, “I am the worst person to talk with about school.” I am one of those cases of someone who succeeded without furthering their education, but I still had initiative and I still had that passion to push me forward. Look, not all of us are cut out for this type of life - we’re not referred to as starving artists for no reason. You rarely make a ton of money chasing your dreams unless you really get lucky, or unless you really work hard at making that happen. So, we all have decisions to make in life, and most of us come across this crossroad. Ride the wave of your passion and pursue your dreams, or go the more conservative, stable route and settle for a more comfortable, content life. Me, I’ve never been ok with content. I like happy. I like the highest spectrum of happy I can reach. I like being so happy that tears well up in my eyes. Unfortunately, in trying to reach that happy, I’ve developed tears for different reasons. You take the chance of hitting those lows along with those highs, but I find it’s worth it. Taking that stable, safe road to me is just like going through life doped up on Prozac… like listening to music with no dynamics… like watching a movie with no bad guys. If you have a family and overwhelming responsibilities, then I understand. But if you have that passion burning inside of you, and you are able to take that chance, please do what I always ask you to do… do what you love, and do it some more.

04.07 – CrossfadeThe City Club of Houma - Houma, LAThese South Carolina natives erupted onto the mainstream charts with their platinum selling self-titled debut album and their huge radio hit, “Cold.” Known for selling out many venues along their trek, these gentlemen finally stop in south Louisiana again. After a less successful sophomore attempt, Crossfade is preparing to release their third album, We All Bleed, this summer following an extensive tour. Supporting their Houma, LA stop is the newly signed hometown boys and No Limit Forever artist, SouthDown, with new singer, Jason Cupp. Tickets are $12 and $22. Adakain also supports.

04.15 – The Damned Things The Hangar – New Orleans, LA Supergroups are hit and miss. Sometimes you hit a homerun. Sometimes you have to walk back to the dugout in shame. The Damned Things knocked it out of the park. Consisting of Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy, Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano of Anthrax, and Keith Buckley and Josh Newton of Every Time I Die, this ensemble meshes heavy riffs with undeniable hook-oriented melodies to create a hard rock sound that has taken fans, critics, and other bands by storm. Not only will you be treated to an amazing concert, but you will be in the rare presence of rock and metal legends, all on one stage. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Luke Starkiller and The Scorseses support.

04.16 – HoumapaloozaThe Steps of the Downtown Houma Courthouse - Houma, LAHouma is the little city that could. So many in this town strive to achieve things bigger than the small town standard, and do so with flying colors. The people who are putting on Houmapalooza are no exception. This benefit for Houma Regional Arts Council, will begin at noon and run into the night featuring 10 of most notable local acts in the area including Ben Labat and The Happy Devil, Barnaby Bastille, Glassbeard, The TaTa Destroyers, Arguing Semantics, Guns of the Seneca, Secret Society in Smaller Lies, The Artisans, Don Puebla and The Shawls, and with The AutoPilots closing out the night. All proceeds go to the Houma Regional Arts Council, but attendance is free to the public.

04.20 – Drowning Pool The City Club of Houma – Houma, LAIt’s rare for a band to go through so many personal changes and still continue to be successful… especially if it’s the frontman and face of the group that keeps changing. Drowning Pool has achieved this feat even though their first three albums all had different vocalists on them. With the hit “Bodies” paving the way, DP continued writing and touring relentlessly and released their fourth, self-titled album in 2010 with ex-Soil frontman Ryan McCombs lending his voice once again. They stop, once again, at The City Club of Houma for their South Louisiana show. Tickets are $15 and $25. Pop Evil, Anew Revolution, and Static Cycle support.

04.21 & 04.23 – Set The Controls: Recreating the Music of Pink Floyd The Hangar – New Orleans, LAThe City Club of Houma – Houma, LAThere are a lot of tribute bands out there. Every single one of them has to find a way to stick out amongst the many. The same goes for the many Pink Floyd tributes. Formerly called Eclipse, Set The Controls does this by simply playing the music – and playing it well. No giant pigs, no elaborate laser shows, just every Pink Floyd song we ever wanted to hear, live, and performed to the smallest detail. It is no exaggeration that they actual do recreate the music of Pink Floyd. Tickets are $10 Thursday in New Orleans at The Hangar and on Saturday at The City Club of Houma.

Why?There is a special time and a special feeling when you come across a band

that just “give you that feeling.” That feeling being that you are in the presence of a talent that will someday get the notoriety it deserves. Seeing

these gentlemen open for Skindred and then put on the most electric performance before Apocalyptica hit the stage would drive anyone to the

same conclusion – that this group is destined to do bigger things if the opportunities arise. You’ll notice the natural stage presence, the genuine energy behind every note, and the impressive vocal range and stylings of

Atkinson – and you’ll never forget them again.

What? Soundgarden meets Led Zeppelin. We’re totally serious.

When? April 3rd at The Hangar in New Orleans

May 13th at The Hard Rock Café in New Orleans

Where?www.blackmagnolia.net

Why?The crowd doesn’t lie. They know what they like, and they like Black Magnolia. Watch them as they sing every word. Watch them as they

anticipate every beat. Black Mag has a sound and a presence that just doesn’t make you a fan, it makes you loyal. The thundering bass and drums,

the in-your-face guitar riffs, and the soaring high tenor vocals grab a hold of you and bring you for a ride that you didn’t expect to take. Which is a

shame, frankly. It’s too often that one will attend a “local” concert expecting the worse. Expecting to be disappointed once again… but we still venture

out and open our ears and minds every week. To take that chance of finding that diamond. That flower in the desert. That Black Magnolia.

And even more of your Local Talent!

If you’ve never heard of the band Puddle of Mudd, there is a good chance that you haven’t gotten out much in the past 19 years. With over 7 million albums sold and a slew of #1 hits, it would take a conscious effort to not be aware of their existence. Songs such as “Control”, “Blurry”, “Drift & Die”, and “She Hates Me” have been flooding the airways of mainstream rock for over a decade now. Now, as anyone who has ever seen an episode of VH-1’s Behind the Music, you’ve come to guess that in this industry there is always one hell of a story about how a band got together, how they succeeded, how they failed, or how they disbanded… or a combination of all four. PoM is no exception.

There are some people in this world that just seemed destined to do something specifically. Some gents have that last name that just looks good on the back of a sports jersey. Some ladies are just blessed with that glamorous, classic movie star quality. Some people are just born on the right day. Puddle of Mudd frontman, Wes Scantlin, just so happened to be born on the same day that one of history’s musical icons was born – Mr. Les Paul. As a matter of fact, he used to joke around about that subject saying in one interview, “Yeah, me and Les Paul

have the same birthday. I made a guitar for him that I’ve been working on eight years now. I’m pretty much just going to give it to him. It’s going to be called the Wes Paul.” Well, at one point Wes was ready to hang up his guitar for good after his group had disbanded, but destiny stepped in – destiny and the singer’s friend. Destiny opened the door one day at The Family Values Tour and that buddy of Scantlin kicked the door the rest of the way open by forging a backstage pass to the event and delivering a demo tape to Fred Durst, who was already working with Interscope Records at the time. Durst contacted Scantlin only to find out that band was no more, but flew the star-eyed singer out to Los Angeles to audition for Interscope anyway. The American dream achieved with one trip to a concert. Interestingly enough though, Wes and Fred really don’t get along now-a-days. In a 2004 interview, Scantlin was quoted giving some very candid opinions on his once believed to be mentor. “He doesn’t write our songs, he doesn’t produce our songs, he doesn’t do anything for us. He doesn’t do our videos anymore. He doesn’t do anything for this band. I don’t know what he’s doing; I don’t know what the guy’s like. All I know is that he’s like Mr. Hollywood guy, Mr. Celebrity. Like, ‘I don’t hang

out with anybody except Hollywood celebrities’. Every single fucking interview I’ve ever fucking done, I get asked about that fucking guy...” He added, “And for me to do interviews all the time and be asked about this certain individual... People think he writes music with me or something. He does not do that. I just don’t get it. We have nothing in common. He doesn’t even call us; he has his assistant call us to congratulate us on our record. Yeah, that’s how pathetic he is.” Like I said, you knew there was going to be some kind of drama somewhere.

Well after tremendous success, a Triple Platinum selling album, a flurry of songs soaring through the charts, and a couple of follow up albums, Puddle of Mudd is on the road again. With different band members once again, Wes takes his chances on

stage and tries to give his old fans what they’ve been waiting for and hopes to gain just as many new ones – hopefully this time without incident like this one – “Greg Upchurch is our old drummer, he’s in 3 Doors Down now; he smacked me in the face a long time ago, “he told one interviewer. Fights or no fights, Wes travels with his new bandmates across the country stopping in every major city along the way… with some new stops, as well. One being the City Club of Houma, the newest regular stop for many artists between Texas and Florida. Scantlin and company will take the stage Wednesday May 4th, along with Taddy Porter and Houma favorites, Stereoside, for a mid week party that Houma, and hopefully Wes himself, will talk about for years after.

Poltern Kinder - “Feral”Reviewed by: Heidi Ohmer

It seems as if the awareness for local music has increased dramatically in the past couple months. So, let’s lend an ear to these Louisiana boys from Tickfaw, Poltern Kinder. I recently stumbled upon this band at February’s Hard Rock Cafe Battle of the Bands and knew these guys had talent. Putting in the CD, the first track on Feral that is heard is “10-4 and 32.” A guitar is brought in after what sounds like putting on a record. Vocalist Josh Atkinson’s pleasing voice is brought in along with a cymbal medley. The calm intro smoothes over to the verse then transitions well into the more aggressive chorus. One aspect that is amazing about this song is the noticeable range of the vocals. From the lower pitch in the verses, to the more aggressive chorus that includes a falsetto, and even a scream, proves that this band is no normal local. After the chorus plays a third time and a repeat of the pre-chorus, is a crazy bass line that is followed by heavy chugging music and screams from Atkinson. This break down added the perfect element to the tune that leaves the listeners with a musical whiplash. To be more impressive, the song does not end in this heavy abyss - the song switches back to the soft introduction guitar and leaves the listeners breathless. Another trancing song is “Mother Virgina” which starts off with a palm-muted chug from the guitar. This is later joined by demanding toms that break into the thrash-out by the rest of the band. An almost psycho delivery from the vocalist that switches from smooth vocals to angry screaming matches the songs message perfectly. The smooth chorus is followed by an in-your-face verse, once again, that will make anyone drive faster than usual. Switching things up a bit seems to be this bands signature, and they prove this mid-song. A quick riff is heard from the guitars along with the crazy and angry vocals – in my opinion, the craziest and best part of the song. This epileptic moment is transitioned well into the chorus once again and the song is left off with a contagious blast from the past guitar riff and growls. One personal element that I am most critical about is the concluding song on an album. This is simply because that is the last sound a listener is going to hear, so it must make an imprint on people’s brains and ears. Ending this CD with “Drown” was a bold one. The song begins with a dragging guitar riff that could come off as sleepy at first. Again, bold choice, but as the low-key vocals come in and shoots up in the chorus, it is clear why this melodic track was saved for last. This chorus later on is followed by another break down, but wait, there’s no screaming to match the music. Atkinson shines in this one with his high melodic vocals. Suddenly, everything stops and the only thing the ear can hear is the bass guitar. Apologetic words are brought in with symbol backing that breaks into an instrumental experience. Feral takes listeners on a musical journey like no other, and like many trips, the more that is on the journey, the better it would be.

Houmapaloozaby Heidi Ohmer, Staff Writer

Houma, Louisiana has taken a big step musically in the past couple years. The music scene has always been supportive of local music, and more recently, national bands have paid attention to the region as well. There is one event in particular that has taken the media by swarm, as well as peoples everyday conversations. Houmapalooza is going to see its first festival appearance April 16th at the Courthouse Square in Downtown Houma. Food and drinks will be offered and a great lineup that includes “the greatest musicians you’ve never heard before”: Ben Labet and the Happy Devil, Barnaby Bastile, The Glassbeard, The Ta Ta Destroyers, Arguing Semantics, Guns of the Seneca, Secret Society in Smaller Lies, The Artisans, Don Puebla and The Shawls, and The AutoPilots. Joe McDonald will entertain the crowd as the events MC. This music extravaganza is presented by The Houma Regional Arts Council and it will take place at 12:00 P.M-10:00 P.M. When asked about the upcoming event, Community Development Coordinator Rusty Bouvier said “The Houma Regional Arts Council in partnership with C&M Music Store of Houma wanted to provide a festival atmosphere that made these original bands accessible to all audiences. We also wanted to encourage networking between these local musicians. Based on the positive responses we are getting from the public at this point and depending on the outcome of the actual event, we hope to make this a semi-annual festival.” So, bring out your lawn chairs and enjoy this free outdoor festival to support awareness for your local music.
