WHAT IS WYD?

WYD is an encounter of young people from all around the world with the Pope amidst a festive, religious, and cultural atmosphere, which confirms the dynamism of the Church and testifies the significance of Jesus in our lives. "WYD is much more than an event. It is a time of deep and spiritual renewal; its fruits benefit the whole of society" (Benedict XVI). It is an extraordinary way of evangelization to strengthen youth ministry. WYD is held every three years and the last one was held in Cracow (Poland) in 2016.

HISTORY OF WYD

The WYD beginning

On Palm Sunday, 1985, pope John Paul II announced to the youth in Rome that World Youth day would be created. In addition to the diocesan World Youth Day that occurs every year in all dioceses across the world, the pope calls youth from around the world to gather for international World Youth Day every two to three years.

These international gatherings have taken place in Rome (1985), Buenos Aires (1987), Compostela (1989), Czestochowa (1991), Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), and Sydney in 2008, Madrid in 2011, Rio de Janeiro (2013), Krakow (2016).

The 34th edition of World Youth Day will be held in Panama 2019

The first two encounters, held in 1984 and 1985 respectively, were organized on the occasion of the extraordinary Jubilee for Redemption (1983-1984) and the International Year of Youth (1985); yet these were not considered official WYD encounters. However, these two events encouraged the Pope to carry out such a blessed initiative which continues today.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF WYD?

The initiator and first promoter of WYD was Saint John Paul II, who started this movement in order to enhance our personal encounter with Christ, which is life-changing. WYD also promotes peace, unity, and fraternity among people and nations, commissioning the youth as ambassadors of this message. Finally, WYD also develops methods of new evangelization for the youth.

A PILGRIMAGE

Since World Youth Day was created, it has always been experienced in the spirit of a pilgrimage. Pilgrim derives from the latin word “peregrinus” which means “traveler”. This means to go on a trip, leave your house, your habits, your ordinary life, your friends and family to go elsewhere. This also means to go away to relax. Youth who participate in this pilgrimage will need to get ready to live a rich moment in various teachings, strong moments of contemplation and meditation. Furthermore participants will share their daily habits with other youth who do not have the same culture as they do. Everything will therefore be lived in the simple way, in many aspects: lodging and meals will be very simple, thus in many occasions young people will need to show patience and solidarity.

DURATION OF THE WORLD YOUTH DAY

WYD is a multi-day event with two main group of events: the first one is related to the “Days in the Dioceses”, during which the participants visit to different dioceses in the host country, and on this particular occasion, other Central American countries. During these days before WYD, pilgrims interact with local families (who host them) and strengthen their faith through activities with the communities in the parishes. The second group is the “Main Events”, referring to the activities planned in the host city: the opening mass, the welcoming of the pope, the way of the cross, the vigil with the Holy Father and the final mass. As well, there are other activities which young people can choose and live out the WYD experience: the Youth Festival, catechesis sessions, vocational center, concerts, and so on. .

THE YOUTH FESTIVAL

Music, dance, plastic arts, food, cinema, and theater, as well as paint and photography will be instruments of cultural connection for the pilgrims of World Youth Day Panama. From January 23 to 27, 2019, the Youth Festival will engage young people from all over the globe in various expressions of art and culture.

The Youth Festival will be hosted in 33 locations around Panama City. The festival includes seven official stages, identified by the names of the Patron Saints of WYD Panama 2019. There will also be satellite stages at the main commercial centers of the Panamanian capital as well as presentations in theaters, museums, and churches which will be adoration centers.

The city of Panama is preparing to become, from January 22 to 27, 2019, the world capital of Christian culture.

The young pilgrim, who is joyful, spontaneous, and free, comes to WYD first to encounter Jesus through the message of his Vicar, the Pope. Such encounter happens in the frame of an event that, due to its international character, unites the youth of the whole world, which inevitably leads to an encounter of cultures and traditions. The best way to focus the youth’s energy and desire to manifest their talents and experiences is through this Festival. In it, we find a way of expressing ourselves within our church and our faith, through music, dance, sports, and many more things. This is more than a mere chance for entertainment. It is a form of prayer and of praising the Lord and an important opportunity for Christian formation. Through this, the universality of our Church will be treasured and following the mission Jesus entrusted her, the Church has brought the Gospel to all peoples and comes to unite all nations

One highlight of the festival is the “WYD 2019 Cup,” a friendly soccer tournament that will be held Wednesday, January 23 in Town Center, Costa del Este. Young pilgrims of the world will unite through a sports activity that will be more about sharing than competing. It is an opportunity to develop good values: teamwork, sportsmanship, effort, respect, honesty, and collaboration.

VOCATIONS FAIR FOLLOW ME The Vocations Fair will take place from January 22 to 25

between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm at Omar Torrijos Recreation Park in Panama City..

The Vocations Forum was created so that young pilgrims have the opportunity to deepen their vocational discernment through workshops, stands, prayers, games, meetings, etc. The vocational dimension of the Faith will be transmitted. here, so that we all know that we are called by God. The purpose of the Vocations Forum is to offer young people an information, guidance, support, dynamic and attractive space, so that they can be helped to discern their vocation in the context of the WYD of Panama. The Vocations Fair wants to show the "kerygma of vocation", which is the proclamation of life as a journey, on which we are all pilgrims, as we are invited to pass through different stations to reach heaven. With this spirituality, we can understand this experience of pilgrimage "Panama 2019" as a reflection of our pilgrimage through life.

The first Vocations Fair took place at WYD in Toronto in 2002. It was enhanced at WYD in Cologne in 2005 and took its final form at WYD in Sydney in 2008.

The context of WYD Panama 2019 follows the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops with its central topic “youth, faith and vocational discernment”. WYD Panama 2019 will have a Vocations Fair called “Sígueme – Follow Me”. This international youth meeting has a strong focus on Mary and vocation, which will help many young people to advance in the realization of their life project with Jesus“ “Follow Me” is Jesus’ offer to us to discover which is the vocation or way he calls us to follow, so that we can say like Mary: May it be done to me according to your word. Mary’s “yes” translates into actively following Jesus during all her life.

GARDEN OF FORGIVENESS: RENUÉVAME - “Renew Me” A PLACE FOR RECONCILIATION

During World Youth Day, from January 22nd to 25th 2019 Omar Park will become a place for young people from across the world to find the path God is asking of them for their lives. It will be the site of the “Follow Me” Vocations Fair and the “Renew Me” Garden of Forgiveness..

“Renew Me” will be the name given to the Garden of Forgiveness, where there will be 250 confessionals for pilgrims to take a moment to be close to Jesus. In addition, alongside this will be the “Virgin’s Grotto”, a waiting area for examination of conscience. The confessions will take place in all the official languages of the WYD, including English, every day from 9am to 4pm. The sacrament of reconciliation will be proposed throughout WYD also in other places of Panama

THE WYD CROSS

The wooden cross, which today is called "The World Youth Day Cross," was made in 1983 to celebrate the beginning of the Holy Year of Jubilee of the Redemption (25/03/1983 – 22/04/1984). During the opening celebration of the Holy Year, young people carried this cross to Saint Peter’s Basilica, where it remained for the duration of the Jubilee. Set beside Saint Peter’s tomb, the cross was present during all the celebrations and accompanied the groups of pilgrims who came to the Vatican.

Many young people responded to the Holy Father’s invitation, including young people from various movements and communities. These youth asked the Pope to give them the cross after the end of the Holy Year celebrations. The Holy Father granted their wish and on Easter Sunday, he gave them the Jubilee Cross.

THE FIRST WORLD YOUTH DAY WAS CELEBRATED ON PALM SUNDAY.

This event was not only the beginning of the journey of the cross throughout the world but also of the herald of World Youth Days, that is, the encounter during which the youth personally experienced the Mystery of Redemption and then spread it throughout the world to their peers, families, and fellow citizens. That is why the first World Youth Day (and to this day, Diocesan Youth Day) was celebrated on Palm Sunday- right before Easter.

THE BEGINNING

The youth took the cross to their home (the San Lorenzo Center), a youth center founded by Saint John Paul II in the Vatican. The cross permanently remains in this location and from there it is carried by the youth. It was first taken to Germany for Catholic Days (1984), and later to other European countries.

IMPORTANT FACTS OF THE CROSS

Up to this day, the cross has visited all continents, including countries at war and conflict.

It was taken to New York City, where prayers were held on the site of the attacks of the World Trade Center.

It was taken to Rwanda, a country that struggled from the consequences of a bloody civil war.

It has also been to the UN headquarters, small schools, hospitals, and prisons.

THE ICON OF OUR LADY SALUS POPULI ROMANI

The icon of Our Lady of Salus Populi Romani is the most venerated image of the Virgin Mary in Italy.

The title "Protectress of the Roman People" dates back to the events at the end of the 6th century, when the inhabitants of Rome suffered from a plague.

FIRST APPEARANCE AT WYD

Our Lady of Salus Populi Romani appeared for the first time at a World Youth Day in the year 2000, when a copy of the icon was placed on the Papal altar in Tor Vergata.

Three years later, during the Diocesan WYD Day, the Pope urged the youth to come closer to Jesus through Mary. In his message for World Youth Day 2003 he said:

“Mary was given to you to help you enter into a more authentic and more personal relationship with Jesus. Through her example, Mary teaches us to gaze upon him with love, for He has loved us first.”

The World Youth Day is accompanied by its symbols:

In 590, Pope St. Gregory the Great, while carrying the image of the Protectress of the Roman People (Salus Populi Romani) after a procession pleading for the salvation of the city, spotted an angel in the sky who was sheathing the punishment sword. Soon after, the plague ceased.

Today, the original icon remains in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Pope Francis usually begins and ends his pilgrimages by visiting this Basilica.

Pope John Paul II gave the youth the replica of the icon for it to be carried around the world together with the WYD Cross. With this gesture, he passed on his legacy: the motto "Totus Tuus", which is passed on to younger generations with the help of Our Lady "of the World Youth Day".

In 1987, the second World Youth Day (and the first one outside of Italy) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and for the first time the WYD Cross traveled outside Europe, beginning its pilgrimage around the world.

In Rome, on Palm Sunday (April 9, 2017), Pope Francis gave both symbols to Panamanian youth beginning the pilgrimage of the Cross and Icon through the dioceses of Panama The symbols will later visit other countries in the Americas.

PANAMA, PAYS ORGANISATEUR DES JMJ

Panama, a Central American country with 3.8 million inhabitants (of which 40% in the capital), has about 75% of Catholics. The Republic of Panama is administratively divided into 9 provinces and 5 indigenous regions. There are several indigenous peoples divided into seven ethnic groups (Kuna (or Guna), Emberá and Wounaan, Ngöbe and Buble (or Buglé), Bribri and the Naso).

Panama is a republic of the presidential type. The Constitution adopted in 1983 provides for a legislative power represented by a single assembly. The executive branch is represented by a president assisted by two vice-presidents.

Elections, both presidential and legislative, are held on the same date, every 5 years. The mandate of the president is not renewable.

Economically, Panama's annual growth is between 8 and 10 percent. The main economic activities are the port activity, linked in part to the canal, the financial services, since the country is a tax haven, as well as tourism ... However, in spite of this important economic development, it is estimated that 40% of the population lives under the poverty line.

Panama, was the first diocese erected on the American mainland in 1513, and the Archdiocese of Panama celebrated its 5th centenary a few years ago. There are also many faithful of the Protestant Churches, and as in many other Latin American countries, evangelical churches are experiencing great growth.

A mixed country, with a population of Amerindian, Spanish, Afro-Caribbean and Asian descent, where both English and Spanish are spoken, Panama has the most powerful economy in Central America. This is due mainly to the channel. Panama took back control of the Canal on December 31, 1999.

MARIE, AT THE HEART OF WYD IN PANAMA

The next WYD of 2019 is under the patronage of Santa Maria de la Antigua, Patroness of Panamá. Mary is the central figure of this new edition of the WYD with the theme: "“I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1, 38).

Pope Francis proposes the figure of Mary to young people as the example of "hope in the future". How to enter into a just devotion towards Mary, without excess or disinterest? What is Mary's place in the Catholic faith?

"At the end of the World Days in Krakow, I have indicated the next destination of our pilgrimage which, by the grace of God, will bring us to Panama in 2019. The Virgin Mary will accompany us on this path, she that all generations say blessed (Lk 1, 48). (...). It is indeed my heart that you young people can walk not only remembering the past, but also having courage in the present and hope for the future. These attitudes, always alive in the young Woman of Nazareth, are clearly expressed in the themes chosen for the next three World Youth Days. (Message of Pope Francis on the occasion of the XXII World Youth Day, 2017)

FROM THE LIBERATION OF SEVILLE TO THE CONSECRATION OF PANAMA

Visitors to the Cathedral Mosque in Seville, Spain, can admire a portrait of the Virgin Mary wearing the Infant Jesus, on which she looks so intently. In her right hand she holds a rose. Above her, two angels are preparing to crown her veiled forehead, while a third unrolls a path on which one can read "Ecce Maria came ad Templum" ("Here is Mary, come to the Temple) c is an allusion to the feast of Purification). At her feet, a woman on her knees prays. The author of this mural of Byzantine influence remains unknown. This image of the Virgin is called St. Mary La Antigua (The Ancient, in Spanish), because it appears on the only wall of the old Cathedral of Seville that has been preserved for the construction of the mosque-cathedral.

The veneration of Santa Maria La Antigua originated in the siege of Seville, when King Ferdinand III of Castile prostrated himself before the Virgin of Kings to implore his help. The Virgin then called her by name and said to her: "You have constant protection in my image of The Antigua, the one you love a lot and who is in Seville .. "

And the Virgin promised him victory. After that, an angel escorted him through the city to the mosque-cathedral. The image was masked by a wall, which became transparent. Ferdinand III was able to contemplate the image of the Virgin before joining his camp, still protected by the angel.

When the Spanish headed for the Caribbean in 1510, they took with them pictures of St. Mary La Antigua, who was to take them to their destination. When the natives opposed their resistance to The Spanish people in the region of Daríen, Vasco Núñez de Balboa and Martín Fernández de Enciso promised the Virgin Mary to give her name to a village if she gave them the victory. A chapel was erected the location of the house of the chief of the natives, making Sainta Maria La Antigua the first word given to Panama.

On September 9, 2000, the Episcopal Conference of Panama officially proclaimed St. Mary the Anti-Patriot of the Republic of Panama. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments (Vatican) confirmed in 2001 St. Mary La Antigua as Patroness of the Archdiocese of Panama.

At the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal, it may be found the the largest port system of Latin America. Regarding the fact that the Afro-Antillean who came from the Caribbean towards Panama were in its greatest majority jamaicans it remained a cultural legacy in the place that is the Rastafarianism: a sort of religion that is still active in several sectors of the population of the city of Colón. Its cuisine has a caribbean flavour and it is seasoned with spicy pepper, it is well known all over the country. Among its specialities the most famous are: fried food and seafood.
