ELBJAZZ is a headliner festival which at the same time provides the opportunity to discover new acts – and neither age, genre preferences nor musical expertise play a role when visiting. The contemporary programme can boast of around 50 concerts with national and international acts from the field of jazz and popular related genres such as pop, soul and hip- hop. “Acts such as BadBadNotGood or Oddisee & Good Company give jazz a feeling of youth culture, taking it back onto the pop scene”, emphasises the ELBJAZZ programme team.

10 YEARS OF ELBJAZZ IN HAMBURG PORT

5 + 6 June 2020

Jazz is music in constant motion. Always going with the flow, not least here at the Elbe

for the last ten years. ELBJAZZ has set anchor here in Hamburg Port every year since

2010 – delivering the sound of great artists to the maritime stage: on the shipyard

grounds of Blohm+Voss, inside the bowels of a ship, and in the discreetly sophisticated

Elbphilharmonie. On the occasion of the ELBJAZZ anniversary year 2020, be prepared

to throw all of your preconceptions about jazz overboard.

Over two days, on 5 and 6 June 2020,

ELBJAZZ will once again transform Hamburg Port into a melting pot of

live music. In the midst of the

urban-maritime scenery of Hamburg, unique venues such as

the Blohm+Voss shipyard and the Elbphilharmonie, alongside the

adjacent HafenCity, form the

centrepiece of the festival.

From the very beginnings of

ELBJAZZ, jazz has never been

defined narrowly as a specific genre, but instead is a question of attitude. Stylistically, the field is wide open. A trend-setting beacon

among the jazz festivals across the country, ELBJAZZ presents world stars and heritage artists such as the modern jazz legends Ron Carter and Archie Shepp, or the German jazz drummer

Wolfgang Haffner, well-known giants such as the Canadian fusion jazz quartet

BadBadNotGood or the internationally successful German indie rock band The Notwist quite naturally alongside young, upcoming talents like Oddisee & Good Company, Zara McFarlane,

5K HD, Oscar Jerome, Hannah Epperson, Seed Ensemble, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Fazer and Fehler Kuti. ELBJAZZ is a headliner festival which at the same time provides the opportunity

to discover new acts – and neither age, genre preferences nor musical expertise play a role when visiting.

The contemporary programme can boast of around 50 concerts with national and

international acts from the field of jazz and popular related genres such as pop, soul and hip-

hop. “Acts such as BadBadNotGood or Oddisee & Good Company give jazz a feeling of youth culture, taking it back onto the pop scene”, emphasises the ELBJAZZ programme team.

Furthermore: “With regard to planning the programme of the festival, our main priority is to present artists who manage, in an inimitable manner, to arouse curiosity among the audience with their music.”

One highlight of the programme is the

Artist in Residence concept: this year, ELBJAZZ has chosen two outstanding

artists in Markus Acher and Micha Acher, known to many as founders

and band members of The Notwist

(photo on the right). These two busy musicians, who currently live in

Munich, will be performing their multifaceted musical creations live at

the festival in four different projects – with The Notwist, Spirit Fest, Acher

Sommer Enders and Fehler Kuti.

The reason given by the ELBJAZZ programme team for their choice of “Artists in Residence”:

“Like no other artists, Markus and Micha Acher manage to create an innovative and successful interplay between various genres such as indie rock, electronica and jazz, in countless band projects and formations. With their stylistic openness and incessant activity, they bring different musical scenes together, not only in the studio, but also on stage. In particular with The Notwist, over the thirty years of their existence they have developed to become one of the most important German indie bands internationally, while also constantly reinventing themselves musically – reason enough to invite them to the festival as part of the “Artist in Residence” programme.”

The Elbphilharmonie has been an integral

part of ELBJAZZ since 2017, and will host six concerts in the Grand Hall during the 2020

festival, including by the Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick and The Norwegian

Wind Ensemble, singer-songwriter Hindi

Zahra, Tribute to Helmut Zacharias‘ Hamburg Years, and the experimental big

band Shabaka and the Ancestors.
