1. Foreword

When I came across the quote cited above in the early nineties on a sunny boulevard in Miami, I knew that I had found my motto. The frame now hangs on the wall in the entrance hall of Sunny Europe.

To succeed in this business, it is vital to accept the fact of living in a changing world, evolving ever more rapidly. The challenge is to stay ahead of this wave of change. Therefore, it is in-dispensable to always take on new challenges and never be afraid to take risks.

At the helm of Sunny Europe I set the course, but it’s our team that makes change possible. Because the strength of a team is determined by the degree of openness to innovation. Sunny Europe stands for diversity. Our unique mix of people is a strength we will continue to invest in. In that respect, the familial character of the company defi nitely plays a big role. In a few decades’ time, we have grown from a modest family business into a company of over 140 employees. We have nonetheless managed to keep this value.

The following pages show the path of growth and change Sunny Europe has followed so far. At present several ambitious projects are being developed for the future. Our core business will further internationalize. In addition, we are working on a pioneering retail concept that will put to use all of the acquired know-how with regard to retail trade and logistics for an entirely new target market.

This is how Sunny Europe rides the wave of change .

Gert Jacobs,CEO, Sunny Europe nv

“If you’re not riding the wave of change, you’ll fi nd yourself beneath it.”

2. The Story of Sunny Europe

1982 1986 1996 1999 2006

1982The Karamichalis brothers found Sunny Radio. Under this name they trade goods with crewmembers of inter-national ships. This continues to be the core activity of the company.

1996Sunny Radio expands: the com-pany takes over Jumbo Tax Free.

2006A new generation, Jacobs-Karamichalis, takes the helm, bringing a breath of fresh air to the company. Sunny Europe starts thinking more in-ternationally and opens a new offi ce in Rotterdam.

1986The family business opens a 200 m² shop on the Sint-Jansplein in the centre of Antwerp.

1999Sunny Radio moves to its current location in the port of Antwerp, with a 1600 m² showroom and a 5000 m² warehouse, to be closer to its customers. The company changes its name to Sunny Europe. The move marks an important milestone: Sunny Europe is now the fi rst maritime duty free of this size in Europe.

20152007 2011 2012

2012The 30th birthday of the company represents yet another milestone: the showroom is completely refurbished. March 24 marks the grand opening of the beautiful concept store we know today. Sunny Europe rethinks maritime duty free retail by being the fi rst to offer a full shopping experi-ence to crewmembers of international ships.

2015The family continues to expand. Its over 140-strong crew set sail for a new adven-ture. From now on, thanks to Oyaya, any-one can shop for Sunny Europe products (duty paid, naturally), either online or by visiting the concept store.

2007Sunny Europe further extends its activity en creates two of the current brands: Sunny, the leading maritime duty free & travel operator in the ports of Belgium and The Netherlands, and The Diplomatic House, for members of the diplomatic corps.

2011Sunny Europe expands into Germany and opens a new offi ce in Hamburg.

3. Our Brands3.1 Sunny Maritime Duty Free

In the ports of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, Sunny is known as the leading mari-time duty free & travel operator.

With a team of over 140 employees, we sup-ply the ports along the North Sea route, running from Dunkirk to the Baltic States. The crewmen choose their desired products from one of the four catalogues: Luxury, Watch Me, General and Electronics. At any moment, over 100 000 co-pies circulate across the globe.

Our drivers visit on average 250 ships per day to deliver almost everything, from phone cards to refrigerators but also luxury products, a segment in which we have specialised over the years.

AEO CERTIFIED

>> Sunny Europe is AEO Certifi ed When an international company is granted the Authorised Economic Operator status, the customs consider it to be a reliable partner. The AEO status offers multiple advantages in the international trade.

Making deliveries to moving points in space, namely ships, within a short time window is no easy feat. But thanks to the know-how gained over the years and with the help of a capable team, Sunny Maritime has become an established name, synonymous with effi ciency, quality and service.

In only fi ve years time, Sunny Europe has managed to become the big-gest player in this market segment as well. The Diplomatic House ope-rates similarly to Sunny, but for the diplomatic institutions in Brussels and The Hague.

Membership of The Diplomatic House is exclusive for members of embassies, consulates, diplomatic missions and NATO.

3.3 Oyaya

Oyaya is Sunny Europe’s youngest but possibly most ambitious brand to date. Because, from now on, we do not only supply crewmembers of international ships or diplomats. Everyone without exception now has access to our products, service and the beautiful concept store.

We intend to make Oyaya the platform in Belgium and The Netherlands for lifestyle and luxury acces-sories like jewellery, cosmetics, timepieces, handbags… Our greatest strength is undoubtedly the wide selection of products. All under one roof. Besides, Oyaya entered a typically colourless market as the odd one out. Because colour is luxury.

‘Oyaya’ means happiness and joy in West-African. Discovering a world of beautiful products. The idea is that with us you will fi nd that extra special something you allow yourself, and share with family and friends. Oyaya offers those little treasures that enrich life. Sunny Europe carries its several decades of experience forward to this new and exciting story.

Make-A-Wish

The idea of supporting Make-A-Wish grew from the Oyaya concept: sharing moments of happiness.

Make-A-Wish grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the hu-man experience with hope, strength and joy.

Make-A-Wish has meanwhile become the offi cial good cause supported by all of Sunny Europe. Our employees organize internal events to raise mo-ney, for instance, and every euro donated to Make-A-Wish through the Oyaya webshop is doubled.

4. Concept Store When moving to our current location in the port of Antwerp in 1999, a modest 200 m² shop was exchanged for a showroom of over 1600 m².

In 2012, the showroom was completely refurbished and turned into the luxurious concept store we know today.

In this wonderful setting, costumers from all over the world explore walls of perfu-mes, sunglasses, admire timepieces from Armani to Zenith and especially the ladies can enjoy themselves in our corner with luxury handbags by brands like Lancel, Furla and Coach.

5. Warehouse In 2015, Sunny Europe had the very fi rst Neopost CVP-500 “Fit-to-size” automatic order pac-king system installed in Belgium. Thanks to its combination with Modula lifts, our warehouse is one of the most advanced in the country.

Sunny Europe sells products in various shapes and sizes, from phone cards to washing machi-nes. The CVP-500 automatically fi ts the box to the product. The machine weighs and measures the product, cuts and folds the cardboard and even seals the box with tape. The ecological footprint is reduced considera-bly: 20% less cardboard is used, there is no need for plastic stuf-fi ng in boxes that are too big and parcels take up less transport space, thus helping save on gas-oline.

The service is noticeably impro-ved as well. Due to the Modula lifts, the order picking is now completely automatic and there-fore faster, more accurate and more effi cient. The warehouse staff also have a lighter workload. The delivery process runs much more smoothly since the auto-matic packing is 10 times faster than manually putting products in boxes. The chance of human error is also much reduced.

6. Sunny Europe as an employer In thirty years time, Sunny Europe has grown from being a small family business run by two brothers into a company with more than 140 employees from over 20 different nationali-ties. Nonetheless with a new generation Jacobs-Karamichalis at the helm, the company still ma-nages to keep its familial character.

The most particular feature about Sunny Europe is probably its in-house mentality. Sunny Europe has its own graphic department, for instance, responsible for designing the luxury catalogues, as well as business cards, web layout, this press kit… and even the lettering of our car fl eet. Our in-house MarCom department handle PR and marketing. You can admire their work in the section on ad campaigns (and discover we even have our own model – hardly recognizable ho-wever with all that shaving foam).

In addition, we have our own IT experts, and take care of deliveries to ships and transport of crew-members to the concept store with our car fl eet and drivers.

The Sunny in-house mentality: our catalogues

Since there is no internet connection (yet) at sea, the catalogues are Sunny Maritime’s primary means of communication with the crewmembers. At any given time, over 100 000 catalogues circulate the globe.

What once started out as one man with a photo camera and a pair of scissors has heavily professionalized over the years and developed into a nine person graphic department. Together they make the four catalogues:

General 90 000 copies 3 editions per yearElectronics 140 000 copies 6 editions per yearWatch Me 80 000 copies 2 editions per yearLuxury 80 000 copies 2 editions per year

7. Publicity and EventsWith the new Oyaya brand, Sunny Europe enters the open market and thus faces new challenges, especially in the fi eld of marketing. In the fi rst year following the launch of Oyaya, the ad campaigns focused on branding.

The marketing campaigns are done entirely by our own MarCom- and graphic departments. So for this project we make our own way as well.
