ThisanthologyofJuliusKatchen’scompletesolorecordingsmadeduringtworecordingblocksin1962and1964,expandsKatchen’sdiscographybyasmanyassixfirstreleases:Beethoven’sRondo Op. 129, Rage Over a Lost Penny,Chopin’sAflatmajorBallade,thetwofamousNoc-turnesOp.9,1andOp.27,2,thelateBerceuse,andfinallyLiszt’sPianoSonatainBminor,oneofthepillarsofnineteenthcenturypianomusic.Katchen’senergeticandvirtuosicreadingoftheLisztsonatarankshighlyamongstthegreatrecordingsofthispiece.However,hisinterpreta-tionsoftheworksbyChopin,BeethovenandthelateBrahms,thankstohisnaturalcombinationofvirtuosity,musicianshipandsenseofform,arealsodocumentsofmagnificentlytimelesspiano-playing.

JuliusKatchen(1926-1969),whodiedtragicallyearlyofleukaemia,represented,alongsideLeonFleisher,GaryGraffmanandWilliamKapellthegenerationoftheso-calledOYAPs(“OutstandingYoungAmericanPianists”)whofrom1940onwardsestablishedthemselvesasstrongandenduringcompetitiontotheEuropeanpianistswhohaddominatedAmericanconcertstagesuntilthatpoint.KatchenhadbeenbornintoaRussian-JewishfamilyofimmigrantsinthestateofNewJerseyandmadehisdébutagedonlytenwithMozart’sDminorCon-certo;inthefollowingyearhewasinvitedbyEugeneOrmandytotakepartinaconcertwiththePhiladelphiaOrchestraastheyoungesteversoloistinthehistoryofthatorchestra;ayearafterthathegavehissolodébutinNewYork.In1946KatchenmovedtoParis,becomingoneofthemostactiveAmericanmusicalambassa-dorsinEurope.Hisextensivediscography,atwhosecentrearethecompletepianoworksofBrahms,showshimtobeasophisticatedvirtuosoofthenewtype,forwhompianisticbrilliancewasnoraison d’être as such, butinsteadservedadeepintellectualandemotionalpenetrationofthemusic.
