A local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America announced Friday it
had received a gift to fund the purchase of a Westampton
building to expand its headquarters.
Henry Rowan and his wife, Eleanor Lee, donated the building to
the Garden State Council, the Boy Scout chapter that serves
South Jersey.
The price for the purchase of the building was not announced.
The new building will be known as the Rowan Scout Training and Support Center and will house the
council’s administrative offices.
“Over the past several years the Scouting program has grown throughout South Jersey, and the council
has been struggling to identify more usable space to support the increased program demands,” said Dan
Templar, Scout Executive of the Garden State Council.
“This generous gift will finally put that need to rest. (We) are eternally grateful to the entire Rowan
family for their continued support as we continue to reach more and more young people in our
community.”
The building will provide more than 4,000 square feet of additional meeting space for local Scout units,
leadership development and other program support meetings.
The council’s existing headquarters, the adjoining Rowan Scout Resource Center, will be used for
expanded field service support, additional meeting space, and an expanded Scout store.
Rowan, a local industrialist and philanthropist, had originally purchased the building for the Girl Scouts
in 1986. In the late 1990s, the building changed hands to a private company as part of a reorganization
of the Girl Scouts.
The Garden State Council serves more than 12,000 youths a year in South Jersey.

WESTAMPTON — The South Jersey chapter of Boy Scouts of America recently
received funds for an expansion of its headquarters.
The Garden State Council, the chapter that serves South Jersey, announced
that Henry M. Rowan funded the purchase of a building that adjoins the council's
current headquarters, which will triple the amount of space available for the
organization.
The new building, now known as the Rowan Scout Training and Support Center, will house the council's
administrative offices, as well as provide more than 4,000 square feet of additional meeting space.
The adjoining building, which is the council's existing headquarters, will be used for expanded field
service support, additional meeting space and an expanded Scout store.
"Over the past several years, the Scouting program has grown throughout South Jersey, and the council
has been struggling to identify more usable space to support the increased program demands," said Dan
Templar, Scout Executive of the Garden State Council. "This generous gift will finally put that need to
rest and we can move forward with our primary mission; serving more youth throughout South Jersey
with a strong Scouting experience that instills character, citizenship, fitness and leadership."
Rowan gave, what was then Glassboro State College, Rowan University a $100 million gift more than 20
years ago.
Templar added that the council and the Boy Scouts of America are grateful to the Rowan family for
its continued support. The council serves Scouting units in Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland,
Gloucester and Salem counties, as well as Buena Vista Township and Buena Borough in Atlantic County.
