A young couple set about building a garage for their collection of ultra-luxury cars. Throw in a contemporary kitchen and a couple of bathsthat feature SieMatic cabinetry and the result is this drool-worthyguesthouse that has guests clamoring for weekend invites!
Most of thetime, agarage
comes about as theresult of a home. It’s not very often
that it’s the other way around. But that’sexactly what happened in a historic areaof Charleston, South Carolina when ayoung couple set about building a garagefor their collection of ultra-luxury cars.Throw in a contemporary kitchen and a
couple of baths that feature SieMaticcabinetry and the result is this drool-worthy guesthouse that has guestsclamoring for weekend invites!
Originally, the couple sought toconstruct a carport of sorts, worthy ofhousing their collection (which includes acouple of rare Benz’s and a Ferrari) on aneighboring lot along Broad Street. Butthe noted historical district refused thecouple permission to build “just” agarage. As a solution, they went back to

the drawing board and came up withplans for a tri-level home that looks as ifit’s been part of the historic town forcenturies.
The temperature-controlled garage, which takes up the entire first floor of the
home, is certainlyunique. But thegourmet kitchen, found in the secondfloor guest suite, isone of the mosteye-catchingelements of thehome. KitchenDesigner VinsonBlanton with
SieMatic Charleston points out thatalthough it’s a small-scale design, it’s bigon style and luxury. “It’s a relativelycompact project, but it’s done to thehighest possible level of detail,” heexplains.
Featuring SieMatic’s SE 5005L cabinetsin Lotus White Gloss, the streamlinedkitchen feels more like furniture thancabinetry. Clean lined and lacking bulk, the modern, horizontal lines of the style
allow for easytransition and flowto the adjacent livingarea. A coordinatingmedia areaconstructed fromthe same cabinetryis the final tie thatjoins the two spacestogether.
The kitchen ispacked with gourmet features includingtwo under-counter Sub Zero refrigerationunits, Miele cooktop and dishwasher, acombination microwave/convection oven,a roomy single bowl sink by Franke, andpull-down faucet. Modern touches include
open lit shelving, clear glass pendantlighting, large stainless steel hardware, and a geometric stainless steel hood.Comfy custom stools line the breakfastbar. Made of concrete by a localfabricator, the bar/cooktop and main workareas carry on the idea of contrast with alarge table made of SieMatic’s SmokedOak. An interesting design element, the 8-cm. thick L-shaped table water falls downto the floor for a dramatic effect.
Again contrast comes into play in theelegant master bath. Richly colored graywalls provide thebackdrop for sleekand streamlinedAluminum RibbedSieMatic cabinetry.Sleek chandeliersprovide a cascadeof light, creating ametropolitan feel asrays dance andreflect off theshimmering showertiles.
Part weekend retreat, part carshowroom and part art gallery (the wholehome is outfitted in art from Robert Lange
Studios), thismodernmasterpiece bringsthe sensibilities oftoday’smetropolitan city tohistoric Charleston.
