Autumn 2020
Presidents Report
Hello everyone.
From one extreme to the next, our country never ceases to amaze us and to quote a line
from Dorothea Mackeller’s poem “My Country” – “Of droughts and flooding rains”. We
have had drought, bushfires and now rain. The drought continues to test the resolve of
those on the land, some bushfires are still burning in the south of New South Wales and
other parts of the country and yet in some areas, minor flooding has created problems with washouts and
road and bridge closures. You’ve got to be pleased there are no volcanoes in Australia.
While our Defence Force was deployed in support of Op Bushfire Assist, we in the association did our small bit
in support of the community and ran a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Warrawong, raising over $2000.00. Much
discussion was had by the committee as to where the proceeds would go and after hearing of the debacle of
the distribution of donations to the Red Cross and other philanthropic organisations, it was decided to donate
our monies to WIRES, given the destruction of native wildlife areas and in some cases the decimation of the
wildlife population.
During the bushfire event, I checked with some of our members who were likely to be affected by the bushfires
and most seem to be OK however, Lou Heidenreich and myself still have not been able to make contact with
Ken Smyth, from Kangaroo Island, SA. His phone is switched off and although we have left messages and texts,
he has not responded. If you are in contact with Ken, please let us know if he is safe.
Last year, we placed an order for AD and Para badges and coins we expected the order would be finalised by
early February, at the latest, but we have recently established the QLD based company we deal with have
these manufactured in China. With Chinese New Year and now the Coronavirus, we have been notified these
items will not be arriving in Australia till mid-March which is a real pain as there were also some presentoes
amongst this order. Please be understanding this issue is beyond our control and as soon as they arrive, they
will be distributed.

Our next major expense is the Myola Ball to be held on 1 August at Penrith Panthers. This usually costs the
association around $5,500.00 as we subsidise this event quite heavily. We are looking at the support of
squadron members on some of our fundraising ventures during the year.
Speaking of support, a number of association members have kindly donated during the previous year (2019).
These donations are gratefully accepted, and we appreciate your generosity, “Thank You” for your support.
In a few days, a number of us will be departing on the 2020 International Reunion, this time a cruise from
Sydney, stopping at various ports around New Zealand and returning to Sydney. This year, our reunion widow
is Lonna Opie from Perth. The support of widows/partners of association members is important to us and we
will continue this support where we can. That said, we are also aware that some ladies have significant health
issues or simply just don’t want to join us, which we understand.
In regard to the cruise, our numbers have been reduced as Dave (Coops/Spoon) Cooper passed away in the
beginning of February. I spoke to Coops about three days before he passed, and he was so looking forward to
the trip. The world is a poorer place without Coops.
Another old Air Dispatcher who has recently departed is Al Braid. The family has kept this information to
themselves for personal reasons. In both cases, our thoughts and condolences go to the families.
ANZAC Day will soon be upon us and as mentioned in the last edition, as there is no formal ANZAC Day reunion
planned, so our Vice President, Anthony Eddie, is organising an ANZAC Day get-together in Penrith with a
possible visit to the Squadron a day or two beforehand. We will be looking at holding our AGM over this period,
so please think about making yourself available for this meeting. All timings and further information will be
confirmed by email, on the website and on Facebook closer to the day.
Mark Swain, one of our QLD State reps have notified us there is to be a Mixed Dining - In Night on 2 May, at
Nerang RSL. More details inside this edition. Incidentally, Mark is heading back to East Timor as part of a
contingent returning to the area. We wish him well on this exercise.
We have also included in this edition, the Ombudsman Report on the DFRDB Scheme. This may be of interest
to some.

Finally, with the idea of helping our members, if you have something to sell or you have a business you would
like advertised, or you want to buy something and you think somebody in the association could benefit,
contact me or the editor and we will have it placed in the advertising section, free of charge. This is a new
concept designed at helping one another. Details available on request.
The first edition of 2020 is now complete. Let’s break new ground and achieve more for the association this
year.
Until next time!
Cheers
Nicko

Upcoming Dates for our Bunnings Sausage Sizzles
Thanks to the efforts of Mick Hughes, we have secured another Bunnings store; this time at Ashfield. And we have also been given a spot at Bellambi thanks to Nicko. Three of the following are on weekends, so a lot of hard work is anticipated. Fund-raising dates for Sausage Sizzles that we have secured so far are:
North Wollongong 28 March 2020
Bellambi 2 April 2020
North Penrith 19 April 2020
Ashfield 2 May 2020
As always to make these fund-raising events work, we need volunteers to man the tongs and help out. If you would like to come along for a shift, at any of the venues, please contact “Grant Foster” for Penrith and “Nick Nicolai” for Wollongong, Bellambi and Ashfield (see contact details on last page). We would really like to see some fresh faces giving up a few hours of their time.

ADAA Informal Dinner Oberon, NSW Submitted by Nicko
An informal dinner was held at the Oberon RSL on Saturday 22nd of February. The dinner was arranged by
Keith Hancox and the Oberon RSL Sub-Branch for the Air Dispatch Association. We had a good collection of
association members from SA, QLD, ACT and NSW. A lot of those who attended camped at the caravan park
with at least six vans and two cabins booked while others stayed in local motels.
Saturday afternoon before the dinner, catch up at the caravan
park. L to R.
Jerry Leiben, Grant Foster, Mark Wahlen, Phil Holden, Ned
Miller, Brian Irving, Nicko, Lou Heidenreich and Gary Wahlen
The ladies also got caught up in the swing of things, L to R
Joyce, Dianne Irving, Alison Wahlen, Rose Holden, a strange
looking lady, Kiwi Leiben, Christine Foster, Roz Towers and Sue
Heidenreich
The courtesy bus picked us up about 1800 and dropped us off at
the RSL where we caught up with Keith Hancox, John Barnes, Mel
Frampton Darren Poole and Red Barron.
The evening was a low-key event and we started with a minutes silence for the passing of Al Braid, Dave
Cooper and absent friends. We then had a presentation to the President of the Sub-Branch, Mr Bill Wilcox
from the association for inviting us and another presentation to Keith for being instrumental in the
organisation of the event.

ADAA Informal Dinner Oberon, NSW Cont.
In total there were about 40 people in attendance with local members of the Sub-Branch and their wives,
with everybody getting a chance to have a chat to each other.
Sunday morning at the caravan park, Rusty Towers who had the most central van site, decided to cook
breakfast for everyone, so all the caravanners chipped in and fed those of us who were in the cabins.
Breakfast was a real good get to-gether.
The President of the Sub-Branch invited us to view the Museum on the Sunday morning, so after breakfast
about 1000, we made our way to the museum, which is situated right across the road from the RSL Club and
for its size has quite a bit of memorabilia.
The members of the Sub-Branch have done a great job in
acquiring mannequins and displays of badges, uniforms,
weapons and models of aircraft, vessels and tanks. There is
also a good collection of stories and incident from local
identities both past and present. A visit to this museum is a
must if you are in the Oberon area.
The Dining-In Night was a brilliant success and the President of the Sub-Branch, Bill Wilcox, suggested we
make this an annual event so we shall see what happens next year.
On behalf of the ADAA and those who attended the function, a big Thank You to Keith, Bill, Nev and the
members of the Oberon RSL Sub-Branch for a great evening and an enjoyable stay.

OP BUSH FIRE ASSIST ADAA STYLE On Saturday 12th of January 20, the Air Dispatch Association stepped up to the plate in support of “Op Bush
Fire Assist”. Given the amount of devastation and destruction over the November, December and January
period to our countryside, homes and animals both domestic and wild, we thought it would be a good idea
to give something back to the community.
Bunnings, Warrawong, were kind enough to allow us to do a Saturday
BBQ and we decided that all the profits and any donations would go to
the Bush Fire Appeal. This also created discussion within the
committee about who we were going to donate to. Eventually it was
decided our proceeds would be donated to Wildlife Information,
Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) as the Red Cross, The Salvos
and other philanthropic organisations were supposed to be looking
after individuals and families affected by the bushfires.
We were on site before 0800 and Ken (Snow) Jansen was there to meet
us, ready to lay some baits. The BBQ area was set up and Joyce started
cooking when Denis McCann turned up. Knowing we would have others
coming at different intervals, we got Denis set up with a desk inside the
store entrance for donations from the public. Denis generously gave us
the whole day and his donation desk raised over $600.00.
We had customers from all walks of life, all happy to buy our snags and
most of them telling us to “keep the change” knowing it was going to a
good cause.
The donations from the public and their support was fantastic with
many wanting to have a chat about where we were from and what we
did in the ADF.
The final donation to WIRES was $2613.00; not a bad effort for a smaller
Bunnings store. We received acknowledgment from WIRES for our
donation.
A big THANK YOU to our
team of volunteers who
helped us raise that
fantastic amount. Snow
Jansen, Phil Kaye, Rob Ward, Rusty and Ros Towers, Fozzie,
Denis McCann and my ‘side kick’ Joyce.
This is the first time, to my knowledge, we have done a fund-raising exercise for an organisation not affiliated
with the ADF or one of the known defence welfare organisations. Great work. Submitted by Nicko

Parachuting Accident
Below is an email from Darren Moffit regarding Dave Coopers parachuting accident at HMAS Penguin in
1988. He is looking for information about the incident could members please assist where they can. This is all
about one of our mates who is no longer with us.
Nicko
Hey Nicko - thanks for touching base yesterday.
My initial email was basically asking if you could put the word out that I am trying to piece together
everything I can about this jump that occurred in November 1988.
Coops had landed on a roof at Penguin (suffering significant injuries) and I landed next to the wharf - there
were others that jumped that day and I'm trying to find out who there were.
Maka McNulty called me last night to tell me he had spoken to Blurta and found out that he was also in our
stick that day (I couldn't even remember that) - I'll talk to Blurta today sometime about it.
I am thinking I might put a booklet together about the whole incident as a bit of a tribute to Dave Cooper - I
had no idea how much he suffered as a result of this incident.
Apparently, there are photos etc and I am also hoping the Squadron may have some info or photos and also
AMTDU, as I recall the zodiac was part of a trial and maybe they have footage from inside the Caribou.
I put an article in the DVA newsletter this week to also see if any Navy people there on the day took any
photos etc OR can recall the incident.
I wrote Donna a letter which I have attached to this email - as I said yesterday I have no issues if you want to
put this out there, but I think it wise to get the green light from Donna before doing so. She told my wife Kim
they were going to read this at Coops' service and put a copy in with him, which I feel very honoured about.
It upsets me that I didn't know Coops was suffering all this time and I want to do this for him.

MAKA’s Shirts Tony McNulty (AKA Maka) has done many things in his life, apart from being a digger in the squadron
and AMTDU. One of the things he has embarked on is the production of Tee Shirts with a definite air
dispatch military theme. Earlier this year, he donated a number of shirts to the squadron but with
changes to Army policy, sub- unit tee shirts were not allowed, even at PT sessions. Maka, also donated
a number of shirts to the ADAA, which we were proud to wear at a few of our sausage sizzles. Now
is your opportunity to give Maka a hand. Below is some of Maka’s designs. The cotton is good quality
and they are great if you are working around home or helping us with sausage sizzles.
If you would like to assist Maka, these tee shirts are available from him directly, they cost $20.00
plus postage. Contact Maka at Email: [email protected] or phone: 0448 459 634.

Alan Braid On 1 February 20 at Nepean Hospital, we lost a man with a wealth of knowledge of Air Dispatch, Alan Braid. Al was one of the principle Projects Flight members at AMTDU. He retired from the Army in the late 90’s and worked for some time at Castlebrook Lawn Cemetery, Rouse Hill. Not long after he finished at Castlebrook, Al had a major heart attack, and this slowed him down somewhat, but he still managed to go cutting peoples lawns for them and Supporting members of Vietnam Veterans and the Salvation Army in the Springwood area. Born Alan Raymond Braid in Colac Vic on 20 May 1948, he and Raelene lived at their family home in Hawkesbury Heights where he raised Jacqui, Andrew and Mark Our condolences to Raelene and the family
David Cooper
On 5 Feb, we lost another Air Dispatcher, Dave (Spoon/Coops) Cooper. Coops was only 54 years old. He enlisted in the Army Reserve on 12 Oct 82 before joining the Regular Army in Mar 84. In Nov 88, Coops was part of a team that jumped into Sydney Harbour with a Zodiac and load follow. The briefing was winds were light but at altitude, the winds were quite strong. Of the team that parachuted in, one landed safely on the land, but Coops landed on the roof of a building, crashing through the roof and being seriously injured. Two others landed in the water. It must be also mentioned that the Zodiac malfunctioned and speared in. Coops was banged up pretty badly and as a result of his injuries he left the Army.
Coops was a member of the association and attended a number of our functions and always enjoyed catching up with his mates from the Squadron. I spoke to Coops the Thursday before he passed away, he was full of beans and excited about coming on our International Reunion. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Our thoughts and condolences go to Donna and the family.
