President’s message
As 2012 draws to an end, this is a short issue of AlumniLinc to wish you all a very happy holiday period
and a wonderful 2013.
Next year we will see many changes at the University as the new Senior Management Group starts to move the University into a new phase. These are exciting times and the Executive of the Alumni Association is
New Zealand’s specialist land-based university
looking forward to working with the University in any way we can to continue to build on the reputation of our University and the qualifications we all have.
There will be physical changes on the Lincoln campus as earthquake repairs continue and there will also be continuous improvements and changes at both the Lincoln and Telford campuses as the University evolves to meet the current needs of students, staff and industry.
If you have any comments or ideas you would like the Executive of the Association to consider, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line via the Alumni Office on [email protected].

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
What a splendid newsletter you have commenced. Graduates always have fond memories of their Alma Mater and eagerly seize on any morsel of news or gossip that becomes available.
Thus the historical note
on the beginnings of the Horticultural Department (September Issue) by Mac Morrison was valuable. He was of course the driving force and had the knack of attracting and encouraging excellent staff.
When Lincoln was granted University status albeit on a
rather thin mix of traditional University disciplines I have no doubt that those originating in the Horticulture Dept were among the stronger strands.
Cheers,
Owen McCarthy
Foundation Professor of Marketing 1971

On Saturday 27 October, 200 alumni, distinguished guests and friends of Lincoln University enjoyed a night of celebration of 134 years of Lincoln University. The ‘Generations at Lincoln’ event – held at the Air Force Museum, Wigram - focused on the unique intergenerational relationship of Lincoln University graduates. While three to four generations are common, some families have up to five generations who have attended the University.
The evening included two
Generations at Lincoln
alumni guest speakers: former deputy prime minister the Rt Hon Sir Don McKinnon and Everest mountaineer Mark Inglis. Sir Don studied agriculture and valuation and farm management at Lincoln from 1960 to 1961, and was also vice-president of the students’ association during that time. Mark was capped in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Biochemistry. Well known Lincoln families and industry friends were in attendance.
The event provided an
opportunity for alumni to get together, with ex-students from the 1940’s through to the 2000’s sharing the evening.

Dr Morrison initiated, then led, the introduction of the series of new disciplines (to the then Department of Horticulture) that were described in the last issue of AluminiLinc. In doing so, Mac helped to lay the foundations of Lincoln’s broad-based

In early 2013 the Alumni Office will be launching a new online system to look after our alumni. The system will hold your contact details securely but will enable you to update your details easily; find other alumni (and send a message to them via the system so no contact details are made public); select events you wish to be kept informed about; and form your own closed groups of fellow alumni to communicate with. We will be

We would like to invite you back to Lincoln on Friday 1 - Sunday 3 February 2013 for a Colombo Plan/NZ Aid Reunion. All 1950-70’s Colombo Plan students, staff, fellow classmates and friends of Lincoln College, and more recent NZ Aid students are welcome. It will be a great opportunity to reconnect with old classmates and staff, and to hear what is happening at the Lincoln campus.
Calling all 1950-70’s Lincoln College Alumni!
The Colombo Plan brought many students to study at Lincoln, however the records of the time are sparse and not on the alumni database, so we need your help! If you are a former Colombo Plan student, or you know of one, please contact Penny Curran, Alumni Relations Officer by phone: +64 3 321 8358, or email: [email protected].
The Reunion programme includes informal dinners
on the Friday and Saturday, and a ‘Think Tank’ workshop on Saturday for attendees and the University to share ideas. There will also be time to tour the campus, catch up with peers and an optional bus tour of Christchurch and surrounds. To view the programme or to register visit the website or contact Penny Curran using the details above.
