It was raining so hard (like Niagara Falls) I didn’t risk sprinting for my car which was just 30 feet away. I had to crouch down with the shelter wall at my back, the grill on my left and the chairs and green box on my right. Luckily the planes were put in the hay barn before everything started. I hunkered down like that for at least 45 minutes just hoping it wasn’t a tornado that was going to remove the shelter and me with it! But then the rain started to slow up, I sprinted to the car, Charlie and Willie returned and of course the sun came out in time for the 7:00 o’clock meeting. Not too many members showed up, just six of us, I am sure one look at the radar scared everyone off. It was a short meeting and then we got a few additional flights in after the storm.

PRESIDENT’S

CORNER Bill Towne

It’s been HOT, HOT, HOT but we have had lots of

chances for good flying! Bring lots of cool water

and you can beat the heat! Big John Muller was

seen pouring the water over a paper towel and

placing it on his head, but he was flying his new

Pulse with the nice little gas engine anyway. The

FARM field is in good shape thanks to the lawn

mowing volunteers. Nic was even improving it a

little using Captain Don’s Industrial paving roller.

That was until the radiator cap started to leak and it

overheated. They will fix that little problem and

finish rolling so the field will be even smoother. So

come on out!

We held the first meeting at the field on June 28th

.

Charlie and Willie White had gotten there early to

test out Willie’s newly refurbished Ryan, a 1930’s

era racer. It was originally electric powered which

Willie had bought at the NVRC auction, but Charlie

fixed it up with a nice engine. It flew great. I

brought my Curtis Robin and had some fun, but

then it looked like the weather was moving in.

Charlie and Willie abandoned me and went for a

Subway sandwich dinner at Bealeton. I foolishly

stayed back since I had brought dinner and thought I

might get another flight in before the meeting.

That’s when the thunder started, lighting hit, the

power went out, and the rain started down hard.

Then the wind picked up and stared blowing the

rain sideways. It was raining so hard (like Niagara

Falls) I didn’t risk sprinting for my car which was

just 30 feet away. I had to crouch down with the

shelter wall at my back, the grill on my left and the

chairs and green box on my right. Luckily the

planes were put in the hay barn before everything

started. I hunkered down like that for at least 45

minutes just hoping it wasn’t a tornado that was

going to remove the shelter and me with it! But

then the rain started to slow up, I sprinted to the car,

Charlie and Willie returned and of course the sun

came out in time for the 7:00 o’clock meeting. Not

too many members showed up, just six of us, I am

sure one look at the radar scared everyone off. It

was a short meeting and then we got a few

additional flights in after the storm.

We are continuing to pick up new members; we are

up to 11 new guys this year. But don’t worry there

is still plenty of room at the FARM. If you see new

folks, introduce yourself and help them out!

Our June Picnic and Float Fly at Lake Ritchie was a

great success with over 45 pilots and over 75 in

attendance! We had a beautiful sunny day and not

much wind. As always we had plenty of volunteers

helping set up for the event, and everything went

smoothly. Nic sold a lot of raffle tickets, and the

boys grilled over 200 burgers, hot dogs and

bratwursts. The rescue boat was in action but not

overly so. I guess a lot of us are finally getting the

hang of flying off and landing on the water. It was a

lot of fun! The next FARM Float Fly is October 1st.

We held the 4th Fun Fly on July 10th

and got it in

before the rain. Dan Jones was CD and did a nice

job. See results below. Our next Fun Fly is August

14th

and Bruce Green is CD.

On July 23th the Loudoun County Aero modelers

are holding their annual Electric Fly at their field in

Banshee Reeks Park, just south of Leesburg. All

electric planes are welcome. See our web site for

details.

SECRETARY’S REPORT Jeff Killen

The June monthly meeting was held on June 28 at the

club field. We had one new member present, Bob

Collyer (a former FARM club president). Besides 3

board members, 6 others were present.

Officer Reports The secretary noted that he will submit something for the

AMA newsletter competition in either July or August.

Dick Sutton reported that he now has all the “Wings of

Balsa” articles from John Hunton (these appeared in the

newsletter several years back.)

Nic Burhans gave us a treasurer’s report. We now have

114 members. We now have $7,175 in the bank. We

profited $151 from the pattern contest. The picnic and

float fly in June cost us $397. We earned $303 from the

estate sale last month. Long-range we expect to be about

$1100 by the end of the year. For the 2nd

float fly

coming up in October, all members will pay for food and

a flying fee. A current roster has been mailed to all

members, and posted at the field. Please be thinking

about renewing FARM membership in December as Nic

will be away during January.

The Field Marshall, Safety Officer, and Vice President

were absent, no report was given.

Old Business Club picnic and Float Fly on 6/25 was very successful.

Weather was great. Lots of help came from Ralph Graul,

Dwayne Beck, Rob Bussler, and Bill McMullen among

others. We gave away $100 in gift cards from Hobby

Hangar at the event. Thanks, Hobby Hangar.

Dan Jones will be the CD for our Fun Fly #5 on July 10.

New Business There was no new business.

Show and Tell Bill White and Charlie Koustenis – Ryan STA –

exchanged electric motor for an OS 1.08 2c motor.

Scale model of a 1930s racer. Great Planes kit now out

of production. Narrow landing gear, weighs 12 lbs. First

3 flights flown today.

Dwayne Beck – Sailplane, DISCUS (not distance as I

stated in the June newsletter) launch glider (DLG) was at

the field. Launched by spinning around and slinging the

plane, which Dwayne did several times before the

meeting began.

50/50 Drawings Bill Towne won the fuel. (Thanks Hobby Hangar.)

Nic Burhans won the money ($21).

Nic Burhans also won a JR cup warmer.
