“If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves,” said Thomas A. Edison. He is absolutely correct. The difference between “good” and “great” is the ability to recognize and nurture the potential in our best and brightest minds. In fact, some of the most brilliant minds didn’t know what they were capable of until someone else helped them see it.

“CEE’s Research Science Institute program was one of the first places that confronted me with serious and rigorous challenges that expanded my mind and elevated the expectations I would eventually envision for myself,” said Dr. Steven Fein, Hematologist/Oncologist at the Miami Cancer Institute (FL).

“[CEE’s] USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) was the initial place where I was pushed to learn science at a really challenging pace and intensity level,” said Kelley Harris (USABO ’03, RSI ‘04), Ph.D. and a recipient of a $500,000 Burroughs Wellcome Fund grant.

“Coming from Louisiana, it was an opportunity to see real science for the first time.” Richard Simon (RSI ’86) Sr. Mgr. IT at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, one of the leading architecture and engineering firms in the world.

I cannot predict who will find the scientific cure for cancer, the mathematical formula for faster-than-light travel, or the swarm robotics engineering for mining and agriculture. But I can tell you that CEE programs create opportunities to cultivate young scholars who will make what seems impossible today, possible tomorrow.

BIOUNLIMITED

BioUnlimited is CEE’s umbrella lifescience enterprise, featuring the highly successful USA Biology Olympiad(USABO) and the newly formed BioSTEM Clubs.

USABO

CEE’s USABO is the premiere biology competition for U.S. high school students. The Olympiad enriches the life science education of nearly 10,000 talentedstudents annually by providing the motivation, curricular resources, and skills training to take them beyond theirclassroom experience to the level of international com-petitiveness. After two rounds of challenging exams, twenty finalists are invited to a two week residential train-ing program. Ultimately, four students are competitively chosen to represent the USA at the InternationalBiology Olympiad (IBO), a worldwide competition in-volving student teams from more than 60 countries. Ev-ery member of Team USA has medaled at the IBO since first competing in 2003. In 2017, Team USA earned four Gold Medals and the coveted #1 Team in the World.

BioSTEM Clubs

BioSTEM Clubs are secondary schoolbased groups that are open to all students to discover their STEM potential. They are not merely biology clubs; they are interdis-ciplinary experiences across fields like biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and computational biology. Through extensive partnerships with STEM organiza-tions, libraries, higher education institutions, agricultural research facilities, parks, science centers and museums, BioSTEM Clubs strive to increase awareness of STEM research and career opportunities for underservedstudents and promote their success in STEM fields. BioSTEM clubs are currently available to select pilot schools in Virginia.

BioOlympiad Initiative

The BioOlympiad Initiative is a collaboration between CEE and ASDAN, a British charity organization that pro-vides educational opportunities for young people through its award winning programs. Biology students in thePeoples Republic of China have the opportunity to take the USABO Open Exam, which allow young Chinesebiology scholars the opportunity to experience intense, international competitiveness.

“ When I was young I was focused on science and math. I was interested in tackling problems that were challenging and would make a big impact on people’s lives. When I look back at my summer at the RSI program I have only fond memories. It’s where I met some of the smartest and nicest people who had similar interests and drive. It’s one of the first places that confronted me with serious and rigorous challenges that expanded my mind and elevated the expectations I would eventually envision for myself. I continue to contribute to The Center regularly because I want to give back as much as possible so that the best and the brightest have the same enlightening opportunity that I had. Keep up the good work CEE!”

-Dr. Steven Fein RSI ’89, Hematologist/Oncologist Miami Cancer Institute (FL)

“ My RSI experience was incredible, and it introduced me to so many opportunities. I’m thrilled that I’ve been able to continue the experience through the alumni network but also by helping bring USABO to its new home at the University of California, San Diego. It’s exceedingly exciting to me that the USA Biology Olympiad will take place at UCSD in 2018. This is an marvelous chance for biology scholars to broaden their exposure to UCSD research.

Founder’s Message

The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) marks 35 years of excellence in 2018. CEE was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H. G. Rickover, father of the nuclear navy and of civilian uses of nuclear power, and Joann P. DiGennaro, CEE’s President.

For more than three decades, CEE’s programs help to assure U.S. competitiveness in science and technology, and to further international collaboration among leaders

of the international community. CEE challenges scholars and assists them on a long-term basis to become the creators, inventors, scientists, and leaders of the 21st century.

While CEE celebrates the accomplishments of the past 35 years, it looks eagerly forward to what will achieved by this premier organization in the next 35 years.

CELEBRATING OUR 35TH ANNIVERSARY

“ CEE’s Research Science Institute has opened up unparalleled opportunities that I would not have had anywhere else. I am honored to be doing research in a field with so much potential to help people. I hope that one day my research with others in this field will help to save patient lives.”

- Syamantak Payra, Rickoid of the Year RSI ’17.

“ RSI was the reason why I came to the U.S. from Bulgaria. That summer I was surrounded by brilliant students and some of the most impressive and dazzling instructors I’ve ever met. It’s when I fell in love with math, numbers, and the endless possibilities that could be conceived. Now I’m working at the intersection of financial engineering, healthcare, and innovation in pharmaceuticals. My work is about nurturing invention and I couldn’t be happier or more challenged…and it all started with RSI. I intend to keep supporting CEE because I want other young bright people to experience what I did. My summer at CEE’s RSI program will always be a treasured moment in my personal, academic, and professional life.”

- Detelina Vasileva RSI ‘95, Project Leader and Researcher at the Lab for Financial Engineering, MIT Sloan School of Management (MA).
