Spring 2012 Edition ABBOTSFORD FISH AND GAME CLUB VOL. 2 Apr 15th 2012 President’s Report Thanks to everyone who came out and attended our AGM, nice turnout which is great to see. A huge thanks to those who let their names stand for positions on the board, and of course big thanks to everyone from letting me stay on another year as President. I had hoped this year would be as trouble free as last year, but of course, that can’t be the case. I’d like to apologize to Wayne Meyers for getting it all backwards as to who was the head of the Sagittarius Archers Club. That’s now been fixed and Wayne’s name has been put back where it should be. Continuing on the trouble free note, it is vitally important that if someone has a safety concern about operations at the club that they bring this to a board member; if you don’t get any satisfaction, alert the whole board. Rumors can be incredibly damaging to our club, both from a membership perspective as well as from a legal one. If you have a concern: voice it; attend a meeting; send emails; make phone calls - just make sure we know about it. We have a lot of things that need to get done this year, some by our club members at work bees and some by hired contractors where we can’t do it ourselves. Please keep an eye on the calendar to make sure the range isn’t closed while some of this work is being done, and you want to use the range. The more people that show up to the work bees the more we can get done, and the less we have to hire out for. If you or someone you know is an electrician, carpenter, cement finisher, draftsmen etc, please let us know if you are willing to help out a little at the club. We’ve got people with these skills already who do help out, but it is unfair to constantly ask them to do all the work. The more the merrier. Speaking of the calendar, again, please check it before you come down to the range. We do have closures that occur now and then either for work, or rentals to our law enforcement agencies. I’ve heard from a number of you about how annoying it is to show up and find a couple of the ranges rented, yet then admit to not checking the calendar. I know it needs to be improved and moved to the front of our website, and that is going to happen with the revamp. But until then, please make sure you check it before coming down. Corrections Services Canada rental with us has not changed in probably the last 20 years, they have one range, usually Range 2 (the 100m) Monday to Friday until 3:30pm, but occasionally on Range 3 as well. Rentals are a big topic right now as well as some members feel that we have been renting out the ranges too often. I would love to hear some more feedback on this. Do we rent too much? Should we rent less and raise our fees next year? Let me know your thoughts. You can email me at [email protected] . I’m excited to be working with our new board, the most new faces I’ve seen in a long time, and hope to get some more great projects started (and maybe even finished) before the year is up. Stay safe and watch your muzzle direction, Rob Engh

The days are getting longer and that means we can play longer! Work Bees are being held every Archery Sunday (3rd Sunday of every month) to ensure that our members have a chance to get their Work Bee hours done on a regular basis, and we encourage members to come out. The next major event happening at the range is our Annual Open House on July 21st, 2012. We are currently looking for volunteers to staff this event - We need parking attendants, fishing helpers, range helpers, food service helpers, greeters - No volunteer will be turned away! Make sure to tell your friends and family about this great event too. Just a friendly reminder that there is no smoking allowed on the ranges; smoking is only allowed on the grassy areas. Smoking on the range is a fire hazard, especially after black powder shooters have used the range. Cigarette receptacles have been provided at the entrances to the main ranges, and we would like to remind our members to be diligent in using them! Let’s keep the range looking as tidy as when we arrive - which means, clean up your brass! We’ve got many new and returning members checking out the facilities, and we would like to showcase the range as best it can be. Dave and Linda Dunn

    Sub-Club Reports

Our Wednesday night turnouts have been awesome! Very busy - New faces every night and we have been averaging 20-30 people. Thank God for the new outdoor range because we all wouldn't fit inside. We had a great turn out for our yearly 3D trail clean up for the annual Chad Davis shoot; we battled through the rain and wind. All 20 targets are out and the trails are in great shape but we have to be on the lookout for a hungry bear that loves to eat our targets. This year’s Chad Davis Memorial Shoot will go down in history as being the most successful shoot we have had in years! To start off the weather was amazing! Nothing like having a spring shoot with summer-like weather. We had archers with shorts and t's and smiles all around. To quote Wayne Meyers, "I think Chad was looking down from above and got the big guy to let the sun shine." Thanks Chad! Our turn out was one for the records as well with over 80 shooters Saturday and 90+ on Sunday. We all ate like Kings and Queens because of the awesome work of Sue Porter and the gang. The finish was strong in Chad's division, but it was Adrian Scheer that took the Gold, Will Dueck with Silver and Darren Mulroney taking Bronze. Our shooters were amazed with our new outdoor shooting shed! It was mentioned by many that it was the best range they've ever seen or shot at. Our new facility was all the rage with our yearly guests. On behalf of Wayne Meyers and my self we want to thank our many volunteers for all their hard work in making this shoot one of the best we've ever had! Now that Spring has sprung, the archery course is available on Wednesdays 3:30pm until dark. Spring and summer archery hours are now in effect. Please refer to the AFGC web site for these dates and times. If you or someone you know is looking to get into archery, or just want to try it out, you are more than welcome to join us each and every Wednesday from 7pm - 9pm. First time is on us, the drop in fee for non-members is $5.00. Happy Shooting & Shoot Straight! Mark Porter Sagittarius Archers

A thank you to all those who donated meat for the Annual Game Dinner: Ross Gordon, Darrell Hamilton, Wayne Meyers, Ron Edward, Russell Sorsdahl, Ian Baird, Dave Harper, Bill Werner, Will Dueck, Dave Dunn, Bob Lefebvre, Aaron Abraham, and Curtis Chaplin. Thank you again, hunters, for making the meal a success! Another off-season is over and it is time to get out hunting again. Spring Bear opened on April 1st, but due to large snow packs it might be a while before the bears can dig out of their dens. Be sure to send me pics and stories of your hunting trips this year for our newsletter. Reminder that LEH cards should be out soon and the deadline for application will be around the third week in May. We would love YOUR feedback on whether to have the Game Dinner every year. Look-ing to have a number of volunteers confirmed to help at next year’s Game Dinner by the Open House on July 21st. Let us know your thoughts! Ian Baird

  • The Trap Club had 15 shooters out in March, and thankfully the snow/rain ceased before shooting started. Two of the shooters had never shot before; three others had shot at our club once before. Thursday night practice starts up again April 5th, 2012 at 6pm and there seems to be interest by several people for this. Just like our Sunday trap shoots, the fee is $5/round (25 targets, targets included) and 12 gauge ammo is available for $8/box. Every 3rd Sunday is Trap Sunday 10am—3pm - Upcoming Sunday shoots are: April 15th, May 20th, June 17th and July 15th. Bring your shotgun and come try it out!

Abbotsford Tactical Shooters is excited to host two excellent courses this spring: June 8 - 10, 2012 Extreme Close Quarter Combat course $425 Per Student + $25 Range Fee Featuring the esteemed SouthNarc from ShivWorks (http://shivworks.com/?page_id=720) The ShivWorks Extreme Close Quarter Concepts (ECQC) course is a two and a half day (20 hours) block of instruction which focuses on a multi-disciplinary approach to building functional, combative handgun skills at zero to five feet. The course is designed to instill core concepts of seamless integration and provide the platform for aggressive problem solving during a life or death struggle. A heavy emphasis is placed upon commonality of body mechanics between skill sub-sets, which means that all combative software is reinforcing. Once the student’s skill sets are initially ingrained, the participant will be stress inoculated with force on force drills utilizing marking cartridges and protective equipment. Bring: Reliable handgun, 2 Magazines (min), quality holster and mag pouches, 400 rounds of ammunition, heavy sweatshirt/soft body armour, mouthpiece, cup, seasonal weather gear, ear and eye protection, weapon cleaning supplies, and a good attitude. May 12 & 19, 2012 Precision Rifle course $250.00 Per Student + $25 Range Fee Featuring ERT instructor Aaron Junglas This course is designed to take the average shooter and prepare them for distance shooting such as the BC Tactical Rifle match in AUG or any distance shooting events that the shooter participates in. Bring: Precision rifle with reliable/tested optic, 150-200 rounds of ammunition These courses have limited slots and they will fill up quickly. Please RSVP me if you have any questions or would like to book a slot for these amazing training opportunities. Richard Simpson ATS Director [email protected]
