My wife is a proud Texas Aggie, she earned both of her degrees from Aggieland. Hopefully someday my daughter will be a proud Texas Aggie (on a shooting scholarship?). Point is I have many friends from school and family on my wife’s side that still live in Texas. Many of them are in the wind ripped Gulf coast and many more inundated in H-town. I worry about them and have heard from most. We have chosen to contribute to help our fellow Tejanos (Texans). I am not asking you to contribute, just a quick prayer or well wish is more than most will offer. Thank- you and God Bless Texas. (oh … and America!!) Some of you may recall that is the inaugural season of the Rattlesnake Rimfire Challenge. We have had 17 different shooters participate in 13 events thus far this season. We have had 4 shooters complete the full course of fire and one needs one event to complete the required matches. Of these five shooters there are three of them that are still competing for the season’s point total. It has been a lot of fun and the work of our Match Directors should not be overlooked. I look forward to seeing many of you out there next year!! I am soliciting input regarding format for next year’s challenge, perhaps a single rifle class? It is important to test marksmanship over a range of rimfire formats and try to keep it as affordable as possible. RANGE SAFETY OFFICER

TRAINING CLASS

By: Dan Martini

The last RSO Class for 2017 was conducted on September 22nd. We were able to get total of 82 RSOs trained during this year. Historically the TCSA does not conduct RSO Classes during the hot summer months or the last quarter of the year because of the low interest due to hunting seasons and several major family holiday or vacation periods. This past winter certainly raised havoc with my scheduling and planning of classes. Anyone wanting to attend my next future RSO Class should send me an e-mail message to [email protected] and I will add your name to my next 2018 class list. My next RSO Class will occur sometime in February 2018. Watch for an announcement in the November and December 2017 Newsletters with the date details.

By: Randy Absolon

There were 20 students that success-fully completed our September 23rd online evaluation, congratulations to all those students.

Our last Class of the year will be on October 7th and is an evaluation for students who have completed the online course. The roster is already full for that Class, and there are students on the waiting list.

Students needing an online course evaluation can look for available classes on the WDFW website. At this time of year, there are typically fewer classes, so students should be prepared to travel farther to attend a Class.

Also, a reminder, RSOs using the HESA Range are expected to sign in at the Rose Iris Range before going over to the HESA Range to shoot.

If you have questions on our Hunter Education Classes you can contact me at [email protected]

BEFORE

This eye sore was cleaned up September 16th in less than 30 minutes by Mark and Sue Verwest, their daughter Erin, and with help from RSO, Grayden Howard who just happened to be shooting at the Range.

AFTER

We all need to be aware of conditions that need to be improved to keep our Range looking crisp and clean. Please take the appropriate actions and notify the TCSA Operations Officer of the issues or take it upon yourself and correct eye sores like the one shown in the picture above.

RANGE CLEAN UP DAYS

By: Sue Verwest

I would like to schedule Range Clean-Up days perhaps twice a year. Once in the Fall and another in the Spring. If you are interested in helping out, please email or call me at [email protected] or 735.1662. I am thinking maybe a Saturday afternoon after the Range closes at 3:00 p.m. for a few hours. We could walk the Range and pick up trash that has blown in and pull some weeds where needed.

SCOUT PROJECT TROOP 249

By: Mike Ensminger

Our thanks go out to Joe Marsh of Boy Scout Troop 249 who recently completed an Eagle Scout project that resulted in a new work table for the Rose-Iris Range and 2 new load/unload/safety area tables in Bays 11 and 12 at the Pistol Bays.

By the time it was finished he had the assistance of Nat Dado, Luke Sanders, Kevin Purring, Forest Heller, Andrew Blaketer, Ron Marsh, Lisa Marsh and Al Dado.

Joe asked that we keep Troop 249 in mind for additional projects on the TCSA Range as additional scouts pursue Eagle status.

If you have ideas for an Eagle project, please let John Hill or Mike Ensminger know about it and we’ll get you the contact information.

Why? 1) You will make yourself an asset, 2) your local Matches will run more smoothly, 3) gives you an opportunity to work larger Matches and shoot with the staff, and 4) get to watch the top competitors of our sport compete at the larger Matches. RANGE SCHEDULE: We are shooting Smallbore on October 1st, 3rd and 10th; Mid Range on October 21st and 24th; Long Range on October 6th – 8th; Vintage Military Rifle on October 15th. Our annual High Power Planning Meeting is October 19th. Our full 2017 schedule is available at: https://www.tcsa.info/pdfs/highpower/match_descriptions/2017/High-Power-Schedule.pdf RANGE CLOSURE: The High Power will be closed Saturday, October 14th, while the Boy Scouts install the permanent shooting benches at the 100, 400, 500, 800 and 900 yard firing lines. RSO VOLUNTEERS: Our Match Season is wrapping up, but we are still looking for help with the NRA Long Range Regional on October 6th – 8th. Volunteering fulfills your High Power service day requirement for the year, and helps us put on a professional Match for our shooters. This is also your final opportunity this year to fulfill your obligation. Please contact John Hauptmann [email protected] to help out. SMALLBORE: The weather was near perfect on August 20th for the final Mini Palma of 2017. There was enough shifty wind to keep it sporting, and in the end, George Crawford prevailed and won by six points over Gary Meerdink 447 to 441. NRA SPORTING RIFLE: The Washington State Sporting Rifle Championship was shot August 26th and 27th. Shooters fired two regular Sporting Rifle Matches each day. The mornings were warm and sunny with light breezes. Elwood Wirth again had the high score (1227-48x). Big thanks to volunteers Mark Montieth, David Baalman, and Paul and Bobbie Rittmann. SMALLBORE: The weather conditions for 100/220 Yard .22 Prone Match on September 1st were near perfect. The wind flags hung limp at the opening, and those conditions lasted for most of the Match. Four shooters shot clean scores of 200 from 100 yards. The excellent shooting continued into the 200 yard portion and the final tally had three shooters with a combined score of 395. Gary Meerdink was declared the Match winner with a final score of 395 and 27 X's. George Crawford finished second also shooting 395 and 24 X's. Third place went to Phil Smith again with a 395 and 13 X's. Seven shooters participated in the Match and all shooters shot better than 90%. This was the final 100/200 Smallbore Prone Match for the year. Thanks to Ron Jorgensen and John Hill for running the Match. For a complete Match description of this and other High Power Events, check out the High Power Venue located on the TCSA web page www.tcsa.info.

SMALLBORE: The conditions were interesting for the 200/300 Smallbore Long Range Match on September 2nd. Winds were low and predictable for both 200 yard relays, but by the 300 yard relays the winds had picked up and were unstable. This made shooting 22lr rifles very interesting at this Range. Still, scores were great and everyone had fun practicing using their Kentucky windage. George Crawford won the Match with a 276-6X, or 92%. This shows that even though the world thinks shooting a 22lr this far can’t be done effectively, with a little patience, a sharp eye on the wind, and a little knowledge of applied Kentucky windage can produce a respectable score. Everyone shot very respectably, Charles Bonham shot with iron sights, and Teddy Woodcock came out for his first 22lr Match. HIGH POWER MIDRANGE: It was a warm a day on September 3rd for the 300/500 Yard Open Any Rifle Match, but the wind cooperated which made for some very good scores. Congratulations to George Crawford on High score, followed by Ben Cook and Bill Prue. SMALLBORE: The 2nd Tuesday 50 yard .22LR Match was held on September 2nd. The weather was pleasant, and wind low. Out of 250 total points possible, Gary Meerdink was Match Winner with 237-2X (94.8%) and John Schneider was 2nd with 235-3X (94%). HIGH POWER MIDRANGE: The September Senior 60+ 200/300 Match was held on the 26th. The Range conditions were comfortable with low wind. Ben Cook was Match winner with a 198-11X (99%.) John Schneider placed second with 197-14X (98.5%.) Notice the single point spread between the top two shooters. Thanks to Ben Cook and John Schneider for helping run the Match. SERVICE RIFLE: The Washington State Service Rifle Championship and CMP Excellence In Competition Matches were fire September 16th and 17th. Dave Sotelo is this year’s WSR&PA Service Rifle and South-east District Champion. Mark Tennier was winner of the single State Leg award. Ben Messinger was the sole winner of a bronze leg in the CMP EIC Match conducted on Sunday. Dave Baalman won the optional 600 Yard Match on Sunday. NRA MID AND LONG RANGE PRONE: The persistent smoke and haze during the preceding week kept some shooters away from the September 8th – 10th Matches, but over the weekend air quality improved dramatically and it was a decent weekend. Shooting conditions were nearly perfect with mild temperatures, light winds, and clear skies. George Crawford captured Friday’s Mid-Range Match in the F-TR category with a 394-22X out of a possible 400; while Andrew Wilde, over here on his annual pilgrimage from the UK, showed us how it’s done with a Palma rifle, posting a 397-23X. 802-8X. Andrew Wilde finished the weekend’s Long Range events with 820–34X out of a possible 850 points followed closely by

Canadian Stefan Isaacs. In F-class, Bill Prue finished the weekend with 802-8X, followed by George Crawford.

Starting November 8th, the Shotgun Range will close at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. We apologize for the inconvenience but the Shotgun Range does not have the shooters to support the extended hours, thank you for your understanding.

The Shotgun Board would like to welcome the Boy Scouts of America to the Range on October 18th. They are providing the Shotgun Range with volunteer service work.

5-Stand will remain open until it is deemed too hazardous for weather conditions. We will notify shooters in upcoming Newsletters.

SHOTGUN RSO’s: A ‘two-step’ approach will be used in scheduling duty for the year. 1st – the first six months (January – June) will be the primary months to install new RSOs and to make further duty date adjustments. 2nd – the last six months of the year (July – December) will be fixed with little to no changes to duty dates except for the unexpected circumstances; i.e., emergency surgeries, resignations, deaths, etc.

All of your declared URODD (Unavailable for Range Officer Duty Dates) will be honored for the year, but another opportunity to declare unavailable duty dates or make adjustments for duty in the last six months will be available in June.

SHOTGUN RSO SCHEDULER: Clinton Thornton can be reached at [email protected] or 961.9388.

WEATHER: Please check the current conditions at the range (www.tcsashotgun.com or www.tcsa.info) before coming out if you have any doubt about the weather. Normally, the range will be open when there is light wind (less than 30 mph). If driving conditions are hazardous and the scheduled duty RSO does not feel it safe for him/her to travel to the range, they are probably too hazardous for shooters to drive to the range too so it may not be open. Common sense should prevail. No shooting is worth having an accident because of the weather.

PATTERN BOARD: The pattern board is located below the Sporting Clays field. This board is constructed of two steel plates and is designed to be used with grease. There is a roller located on a hook on the right upright support. If the grease it too dry to roll effectively, the duty RSO can provide a tube of grease to be dabbed on the board and rolled out with the roller. The two cement filled coffee cans on the field located to aid in determining the range from the pattern board. One is at 25 yards (practical for skeet) and the second is at 40

yards (practical for trap). There is a sign posted on the pole at the entrance to the pattern board which clearly states: Number 6 through 9 lead shot ONLY! NO slugs or steel shot! Also, please pick up all spent hulls and deposit them in the trash barrel on the sporting clays field.

TOKEN MACHINE: There is NO range fee for TCSA members. Please come to the Shotgun Range with the correct denominations of currency to purchase tokens. The token dispensing machine will take $5, $10 and $20 bills so please bring those denominations with you for purchase of tokens when you come to the Range.

NOTICE TO ALL SHOOTERS: We ask you that you clean up after yourselves when out at the Range.

Regardless of what "formal activities" (Fun and Games, Trap League, Skeet League, etc.) are schedule at the Shotgun Range, at least one Trap and one Skeet field are always open for regular shooting on the same days. There may be a short waiting time to access the Range you want to shoot on when "formal activities" are scheduled. Please do not hesitate to come out and shoot as much regular trap or skeet or Sporting Clays (if open) you care to shoot even when we have a scheduled Event.

SHOTGUN RANGE HOURS

Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Note: Hours may change without notice. The Range may also close on any given day without notice due to unforeseen circumstances or inclement weather.

ALL MEMBERS MUST HAVE THEIR CURRENT MEMBERSHIPS CARDS WITH THEM

ALL MEMBERS MUST show their current Membership Card to the RSO on duty upon arrival at the Range. Membership Cards need to be shown at all Ranges and all Events or will be required to pay the non-member Range Use Fee. EVERYONE must sign-in!
