The criteria are the same as for the Members Juried Show and is as follows: Winners’ Invitational Category: Artists who have won cash awards in two out of three previous consecutive shows may exhibit ONE painting in this category. Artists are not eligible for Show awards for two years. However, they will be eligible for the “People’s Choice” Award. We felt this was needed to encourage all members to compete in Briggs and give all artists a greater opportunity to win the cash prizes.

including painting and drawing in almost every media, ceramic sculpture, wet-felting, jewelry and more. Tonja has been represented by galleries across the country and her work is in multiple private collections internationally. Some of her public work includes murals for the Carnegie Foundation, the Minnesota Discovery Center and public sculpture in the City of Duluth. Quote "I get lost in the works of Klimt and Degas, the romance of the Pre-Raphaelites, the figures Toulouse Lautrec and Egon Schiele. I am captivated by the human form, texture, layering and hidden images. Much of my work incorporates several media combined in unexpected ways. By working in mixed media I often build tactile surfaces that invite exploration. I want to pull you in, cause you to explore and move through my work. I work in several different media including all paint and drawing media, printmaking, ceramic sculpture, blown glass and more. I love trying new things and learning through experimentation."

Weekly Classes with Rick Wheeler

Scratchboard/Watercolor:

Combining Drawing with Painting

There are several ways to work with the medium of scratchboard. Scratchboard is fundamentally a drawing medium, popular in the early 1900's for book illustration. Scratchboard makes for some very dramatic black & white renderings, but with this class, the students will discover how adding color - using traditional watercolor - can enhance their drawings. The class will present a variety of tools and techniques that can be used with scratchboard, as well as answering the often asked question, "what happens if you make a mistake?" The solution is easy. Come join us and learn about this unique medium. Some drawing experience is helpful, but not essential. Dates: Every Tuesday, January 9 to April 24, 2018

Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Acrylic Landscape: a Painterly Approach

by Rick Wheeler

"Painterly" is a term often used among other painters. If one painter calls another artists work, "painterly" it's considered a compliment. The term is used to describe a style of work that allows for visible brushstrokes, thick applications of paint, dry brush, and blocking-in, while incorporating a more generalized, less detailed approach to painting. All of these techniques, and several others will be covered. A popular

reference is the work of the Impressionists, who almost single-handedly

Page 9: President’s MessageMembers Juried Art Competition Showcasing “The Best of the Santa Rita Art League of GVR” March 2nd - 31st, 2018 at Canoa Hills Social Center 3660 S. Camino

popularized outdoor, or "plein air" painting in the late 1800's. To look at a Monet up close is to get a very good sense of what "painterly" means. Not only did Monet use thick paint, but his brushstrokes - particularly up close - are very visible and energetic. We'll explore some of these techniques while working from photos. Our challenge as painters is to interpret, but never copy, our photo resources. With demos and personal instruction, the instructor will help guide you into the enjoyment of painterly painting. Dates: Every Tuesday, January 9 to April 24, 2018

Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Fee: $45/3-hour class or a special price of $75 instead of $90, if you register for both a morning and afternoon class on the same day. Supplies List: Available before January

Registration Forms: Available at CPAC, at our web-site at http://www.performingartscenter.org/programs/adult-education/adult-weekly-classes/ or by contacting Susan Ettl at [email protected] or at 949-291-7001.

Oil Painting Fundamentals Instructor: David Simons

Dates: April 4 and 5, 2018

From beginner to advanced students, David will help you with core principles as you paint. This class will focus on strengthening one's abilities to see values and colors. Composing the overall design and the relationships within the painting which make the painting work will also be emphasized.

Layering Pastels - Warm and Cool Instructor: Judy Wegenast Dates: April 11 – 13, 2018

One of the most alluring aspects of painting is color. Since no two individuals perceive color in quite the same way, no two artists will represent it in the same fashion. As a pastelist, my color choices are derived from

individual sticks of pigment. Laid down in a raw manner, colors can easily appear isolated from one another, producing a discordant painting. I use the technique of layering colors to address this issue. I teach a step-by-step process for developing a painting. Working from reference photographs, participants will explore value, composition, drawing, color, and pastel application. I will provide daily demos, individual guidance with each student, and conduct group critiques.

The goal of this workshop is to teach participants to apply pastel in layers using correct value. Layers are applied in warm and cool layers until the desired hue is obtained.
