Tulips are a fascinating plant and one of the most beloved flowers in the world. Tulip bulbs are grown in the Netherlands but originated in the mountain regions of Asia where they can be found growing in the wild today. Thousands of acres are devoted to growing bulbs and it is a sight to see such large acreages in bloom at one time. This does not last long as the flowers are cut off in the spring so that all of the plant’s energy is devot- ed to the growth of the bulb. The flowers are removed by a piece of equipment called a kopmachine and many of the flowers are used to feed cattle. Not every flower is cut by the machine so the remaining ones must be removed by hand. It is said that there is not one bloom left in Holland by May! The bulbs are dug up in July and then graded by size. The grower that we use only sells 12 cm circumference bulbs or larger to ensure the best and strongest flowers. Our grower has also mastered the art of successful blending of colors and textures to enhance the show. Nature’s fireworks at its best! Tulips were once very expensive and were highly sought after in the 1600’s in Europe. One tulip bulb was traded for 4600 florins (a gold coin used during the period) along with a carriage and two horses and was paid for immediately even though the bulb would not be de- livered for several months! The following is an actual transaction that took place between two merchants for one Viceroy tulip: Two lasts of wheat, two lasts of rye, four fat oxen, eight fat swine, twelve fat sheep, two hogsheads of wine (a hogshead = 63 gallons), four tuns of beer (a tun=252 gallons), two tuns of butter, one thousand lbs. of cheese, a complete bed, a suit of clothes, and a silver drinking-cup. A Viceroy tulip is a unique tulip, but come on! This craziness lasted for sev- eral years before the Great Bulb Crash happened. Many a speculator’s ruin occurred. What were they thinking? I hope that everyone had a great holiday season. The club always looks its best decorated for the holidays and it was good to see that all of our events were well attended. I look forward to a successful 2015 for the club. This is the time of year that the Board in con- junction with the various committees prepares calendars and programs for the upcoming season. The coordination of calendars with the various tournaments and interclub play on the golf course, tennis courts and with our swim team, the Sea Lions, is a time consuming and not unlike a jigsaw puzzle, sometimes exasperat- ing. I hope you join me in thanking the volunteers for their efforts on our behalf. We also begin the annual budget process in February. One of the big issues that we face moving forward is growing or at the least replacing members that have left the club. This is an ongoing effort and it is a fact that people join clubs not only to participate in the activities but for the social aspect of meeting new people, enjoying time with their friends and establishing a “home away from home.” The marketing of memberships was the pri- mary focus of the Board meeting last evening. February 2015

Golf Pro’s PointersBy Josh Tremblay, PGA

Golf Chairman Phil Schwartz and I will present the 2015 Golf Calendar to the Board for approval at their February meeting. The Golf Calendar will be announced at our Golf Season Opening Night on Thursday, March 12th in the Ballroom. We will begin at 6:30 p.m. and hope all of you can make it to this fun event and learn more about the golf program for 2015! Sign-ups for the Spring Tuesday Night Twilight League will begin at this event, as well. Last spring’s Champions, Joe’s Giants, get to keep their squad together for this season.

The Tremblay’s Two-Man Team Championship reg-istration will begin on February 1st and run until March 22nd! As we did last year, we will take as many teams as possible in multiples of four. If your schedule isn’t very flexible or you know that you will be away quite a bit, this probably isn’t the event for you as trying to coordi-nate four different schedules is trying enough. We will group teams into divisions of four teams for round-robin play between April 1st and July 5th. The top 32 teams will then move into a single elimination bracket culmi-nating with the “Final Fore” in October. Once we get to the bracket stage, there will be set dates that matches will be played on (unless the two teams schedule it prior to this date).

Any remaining Golf Shop Credit will stay on the books until February 28th so be sure to stop by and get some great deals on remaining merchandise. The equipment manufacturers are all coming out with NEW products this spring:

• Callaway – Big Bertha Irons, Alpha 815 Woods, XR woods and irons, Odyssey Works putters

• Nike – Vapor Pro, Vapor Flex, Vapor Speed woods

• PING – G30 series irons and woods

• Taylormade – R15 woods, AeroBurner woods and RSi irons

• Titleist – 915 series woods

For those of you who are looking to travel with me on one of our golf trips, we are planning to go back to Bandon Dunes in 2016, likely in late August or early September. For 2015, I am working on a couple trips

to courses within a few hours. If there is interest, I may try to put together a trip to Wisconsin to play Erin Hills, site of the 2017 U.S. Open. If you are interested in receiv-ing my trip emails or have an idea for a trip, please email me at [email protected].

Finally, Alissa Volchko and Tyler Bantle are running a 20% off promo through the month of February for re-gripping of six or more clubs. If you’d like us to evaluate your set, bring them by and we’ll help you determine which grips need replacing and help find the right new grip for you!

We are always looking for new players, so if you play bridge, please consider joining us for an evening. SGCC members gather on the first and third Friday evenings of each month, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and ending around 10:00 p.m., for a fun evening of social “party” bridge. Many of us meet for dinner at 6:00 p.m. and others join us at 7:30 p.m. for the bridge. Upcoming sessions are scheduled for February 6th, February 20th, and March 6th. Sign-up is on a session-by-session basis, so there’s no need to find substitutes when you can’t play. If you would like to reserve a spot for an upcoming ses-sion or have any questions, please call Don Frederick at (703) 425-9722.

to propose a new candidate for membership as most all of his friends are already here. The Board deter-mined that we need to establish a stronger web pres-ence in our member marketing efforts to better expose the club to potential members.

Additionally, the Board reviewed initiation fee pric-ing and determined that this would be the right time to begin a “membership drive” to attract new members prior to the season beginning. We decided to change the initiation fees for Active Membership to $20,000, Senior and Young Professional to $12,000 and Social to $5,000. These new rates will only apply to the first 30 applicants. Our goal is to return to full membership this year and with your help and a more aggressive market-ing plan we believe that we can achieve this objective.

Thank you for your support and I hope to see you at the club.

February 2015

Retirees CornerBy Bill Gaffney

The 2015 season of the Northern Virginia Retired Mens Golf Association, henceforth to be referred to as the Retirees League, is less than eight weeks away. Last year we finished in second place, only half a point from tying for the Championship. We can do it this year – we are appealing to all our Springfield buddies to sign up for the new season! Greg Bedner became our newest member and the second to sign up for the coming season.

The only non-waivable requirement for joining the Retirees is to be at least 55 years of age – at that time you must have retired from something. A love of golf, of competitive, friendly matches with great teammates and opponents who are as dedicated and gentlemanly as you are is a given. Mostly all matches take place on Thursday with half of them at Springfield. The half on the road are at several of Northern Virginia’s finest private courses. This year we’ll visit at least two recently renovated courses: River Bend and Westwood. In addition to the golf, each match is followed by a delicious lunch with the course’s kitchen putting their best cuisine on display for the retirees. All handicaps are not only welcome, but needed! The more players on the team, the greater flexibility the captains have in putting the right pairings together. We have two

teams, Red and Blue, with handicaps ranging from the single digits to the mid-thirties. The captains have to keep the teammates within eight strokes of each other. Because our opponents follow a similar strategy, each match is different. Some weeks you get strokes, some weeks you give strokes; regard-less, the goal is to win the hole! We have match play against the other clubs and metal play against the field playing that day in the “sweeps” for credit at the Pro Shop. All sorts of variations are possible and it is never, ever boring.

So, come join us – registration is at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19th in the Ballroom. The en-try fee is $75. If you cannot make the meeting, just leave a check made out to “Springfield Retirees” with Emily at the front desk and one of the cap-tains will contact you.

WGA-9 NewsBy Maria Supko

And so the planning begins! The WGA-9 Executive Board is starting to gear up for the 2015 season, which is only two months away. But before we even think about golf, we will once again kick off the season with our Winter Social.

February and March are our big Membership Drive months. Membership forms were emailed in January and completed forms are already starting to come in. Forms are also located in the WGA-9 file cabinet in the Main Office. Feel free to pass these out to friends who might be interested in joining.

If you’d like to join the WGA-9 in 2015, we’d love to have you. Contact Chair Margie Jones at [email protected] for information.

The entire Board will meet over the winter to finalize the golf season. If you have any questions, ideas, or suggestions please contact a Board Member. We’ll be sure to discuss it during our planning meeting in early March.

February 21st Saturday Evening George Mason Women’s Tennis

April TBA Saturday Ice Breaker Tournament

Tennis ChatterBy Patty Evans and Michael Thimblin

February is here and the start of the professional ten-nis season is upon us with the recent conclusion of the Australian Open. The 2015 tennis calendar has been created and is ready to be reviewed by the Board of Directors. There will be plenty of fun and competitive events including the Icebreaker, World Team Tennis, and the popular Bisque. The club will once again be hosting the George Mason Women’s Tennis team, coached by our very own Steve Curtis. They will be playing on Saturday February 21st at 5:00 p.m.; there will be a bar set up for refreshments. Our first on-court event is the Ice Breaker tournament in the middle of April. The exact date will be finalized once we have coordi-nated dates with the golf folks to avoid conflicts. In the meantime, sign up to play in the round robins which are going strong on Sunday mornings.

In case you missed the weekly tennis email from Dave Ruben, the annual Interclub meeting was held at The Country Club of Fairfax, and we are back in the league for the upcoming 2015 season! A meet-ing for all women interested in playing on our Interclub teams will be announced in the coming weeks. Team rosters, Captains, practices, match dates, etc. will be items for discussion. Watch for the meeting date announcement.

The Australian Open Wine and Watch Party, our first event of the year, took place after this went to print so we will have a write-up and information in next month’s Club Life. Please note the upcoming events. We hope to see many of you cheering for the George Mason women or playing in the Ice Breaker Tournament in the weeks ahead.

If you are not receiving the weekly tennis email opt-in via the SGCC web site or by calling the tennis pro shop. The weekly emails highlight the various upcoming activities that are available at the club. As always, we are interested in hearing about how we can make your tennis experience better so feel free to contact us with any suggestions.
