June 2016 Meeting Review

Once again we had a wonderful potluck meal before our last meeting of the year. There were 92 members in attendance. Door prizes were donated by Peggy Beckett, Marilyn Robinson, Carol Darou, Anita Payne, Mara Harrison, and Ross Hollingsworth; winners were Mary Cooke, Marilyn Devlin, Betty Watt, Lois MacLean, Deborah Ward, Rosemarie Bowick, Donna Eglington, Cate Nesbitt, Kathy Truelove, Roberta Peets, Ruth Rodford. There were some wonderful projects in the 27 items presented during Show & Tell. The charity quilt was presented to Sarah Bingham, the Fundraising Coordinator for Interval House who thanked us for the quilt and explained how the money raised from the raffle will be used by their organization. Sarah stated that this beautiful quilt meant more than raffle funds; it let’s clients know that “people care about them”. Carol Darou asked for one more person to audit our books with Diane Gallagher; Mara Harrison volunteered to do this. Carol then presented 10 year gold name tags to Linda Bates, Leona Blair, Berkeley Butler, Bev Davidge, and Vicki Hough; followed by 25 year name tags to Pat Landry, Gwen McNaught, Kathleen O’Flaherty, and Mary Young. A Vice President is still being sought and we also need someone to take over Show & Tell from Peggy Beckett. Marilyn Robinson advised that more donations of item are needed for the Fall Sale. The “early” draw was made from names of people who have already donated, with Diane Gallagher being the winner. Bev Davidge advised that the Fall Retreat is October 11-12 at the McIntosh Inn in Morrisburg. Heather Buchan showed her stained glass tulip block sample for Block of the Month.

Bridget O’Flaherty spoke about the survey she had distributed asking members to complete it and return it to her so she knows what to plan for Program. Carol Darou recognized the hard work of all outgoing and remaining Executive members and introduced the new members. Marilyn Robinson explained that it is Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017 and announced that she is reintroducing the President’s Challenge in 2016/2017 in conjunction with this. She outlined the specifications for this Challenge and had handouts for members who are interested. (see also front page of this newsletter).

Library

All three books are from the same series, The Classic American Quilt Collection. (Rodale Quilt Books).

The Classic American Quilt Collection - Nine Patch (1994). Donated by Sharon Kryvenchuk Nine Patch is one of America’s favorite and most versatile quilt patterns. Even today it is one of the first patterns to be taught to beginner quilters. The humble Nine Patch often kindled the flame of a lifelong passion for quilting and offers limitless design possibilities.

The Classic American Quilt Collection - Log Cabin (1994). Donated by K. O’Flaherty A red centre block came to symbolize the hearth of the home, and a yellow centre represented a lantern placed in the window as a welcoming beacon. During the Civil war, a Log Cabin quilt

with black centre squares hung on a clothesline was meant to signal a safe haven for the Underground Railroad. One half of the Traditional Log Cabin is made using light fabrics and the other half is made using dark fabrics. Hundreds of different quilting designs can be created using the Log Cabin.

The Classic American Quilt Collection - School House (1995). Donated by Sharon Kryvenchuk. The earliest examples of quilts using these blocks appeared sometime after 1870. House blocks were identified by a variety of names, including Log Cabin, Old Kentucky Home, Old Folks at Home, and Lincoln Log Cabin. Ruth Finley first used the name Little Red Schoolhouse in her 1929 book “Old Patchwork Quilts and the Women Who Made Them”. Many years later the Schoolhouse block still works its special charm on quilt makers.

Thank you to K. O’Flaherty and Sharon Kryvenchuk for their donations to the LCQG Library! ~ Marilyn & Edith~

Outreach

It is time to start preparing for this year's Outreach project. The fabric and pattern have been purchased. We will be distributing kits for members to sew one block each in October. You will have a month to complete your block and return it at the November meeting. We will then put it together and have it quilted. Our goal is to present the quilt to the chosen charity in February. That will give them time to sell tickets until our show in August 2017. We are excited about this project and hope you will help us with the process. ~ Nancy & Mary ~

Sad News

Laurielle Chabeaux, a Guild

member since September 2014, died on September 11 following a long battle with cancer. In the words of fellow Guild member Anna Cornel, Laurielle was “a

delightful lady who was optimistic to the end and was always ‘up’ to try new things”. Our sympathies are extended to her family and friends.

Many of our members have a

block in this Lombardy Fair quilt block challenge quilt.

The winner of the quilt was Jill Turnbull (2nd from right),

minister of the Presbyterian Church in Smiths Falls.
