    Vol. 6 • Number 1 MARCH 2015

President’s MessageMargie Washnok APRN, MS, DNP

    President of SDNA

I had the honor to represent the nurses of SD as the SDNA President at the 2014 Presidents Immersion Course sponsored by ANA in early December . I met Pam Cipriano, ANA President, the employees of ANA, and the State Presidents who attending the meeting . Pam Cipriano, ANA President, presented information about “Creating Your Personal Legacy” to inspire presidents to lay the groundwork for developing personal plans . Some of the other presentations included information about strategic planning at the state level, creating a personal leadership plan, and communicating with the news media and training .

Role playing was done with State Presidents on communicating with the news media . It is very important for nurses to determine in advance the topic the media wants to interview the nurse to obtain information on, as well as; understand how to not provide information that the news media personnel are attempting to obtain from the nurse, even though the nurse does not want to disclose the information . I believe this is an exercise that all nurses need to be exposed to, so the correct information is provided . News media personnel like to tell the interviewee that the camera and recorder has stopped and attempt to trick the nurse to respond to the answer . Often the news media personnel will say this is off the record, tell me what you really think about the specific top, but in reality the camera or recorder is still on .

ANA’s Strategic Goals were shared with the State Presidents . It is important for each State Nurses Association was encouraged to develop a Strategic Plan . SDNA had a Strategic Plan that was developed several

years ago . The SDNA Board of Directors will be working on the Strategic Plan over the next few months . The Strategic Plan will then we posted on the SDNA website for the members to review . This will then be voted on at the annual convention in 2015 . SDNA Mission and Vision are on the SDNA website .

Meeting our ANA President, Pam Cipriano, was an excellent experience . President Cipriano is very interested in each state to determine how she and ANA can assist with membership, provide workshops, etc . President Cipriano organized telephone conferences with each State President to determine what she and ANA can do to assist the states . President Cipriano wants each State Membership to think strategically about membership recruitment and retention .

The 2015 Membership Assembly will be July 23-25, 2015 in Washington, DC . Check the ANA website at nursingworld .org for more complete details .

    M. Claire May, South Dakota Nurses Foundation Community Board member

“Will the TWO recipients of the Marianne M . Stenvig Scholarship, please step forward!” This singular scholarship is usually “awarded to a male registered nurse in pursuit of his educational goals .” In the summer of 2014, in an unprecedented South Dakota Nurses Foundation Board decision, two nurses were selected for the Stenvig Scholarship: Charles Pugsley of Aberdeen, SD and Thomas Munce of Sioux Falls, SD .

Currently studying for a Doctorate of Nursing Practice with a specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner at South Dakota State University (SDSU), Pugsley began his nursing career on the Medical Surgical Trauma Team at Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, SD in 2011 . He related, “I learned what a nurse truly does day to day .”

For Pugsley a medical career seemed to be a natural fit . Appreciating and helping others, in addition to an enthusiasm for science, anatomy, and a “hands-on job” drew him into nursing . He remarked, “I also enjoy learning and in this profession, that never stops .” Initially, Pugsley wanted to be a nurse anesthetist . After working with a Nurse Practitioner, he realized, “I enjoy talking with my patients and planning their care, rather than knocking them out .”

Pugsley has served in the Emergency Department at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center for three years . “I have always had a desire to work in the [Emergency Department] and my dreams and goals have lived up to my expectations . I am truly blessed to work with so many great professionals .”

A significant epiphany for Pugsley is how “uneducated people are about health care, often through no fault of their own .[…] I find it so hard with all the technology and information that is a click away, people have very limited knowledge about how to take care of themselves,” he articulated . “Health care has a long ways to go to make the system better and more successful, especially in America .”

Professor and mentor Dr . Lori Hendrickx inspired Pugsley’s professional philosophy: Pursue excellence in all that you do . “She is the nurse that myself, and I am sure many others, look up to,” he recounted . “She has a passion for the nursing profession that makes you work hard, strive for excellence every day, and I hopefully one day can reflect that same passion for this great profession as she does .”

Pugsley’s father has been an inspiration as well . “He has shown me how to speak to people, communicate with them, which comes in handy in the nursing profession,” Pugsley replied .

Growing up in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Pugsley attended elementary and middle school in Custer, St . Thomas More High School in Rapid City, and acquired his B .S degree in nursing at SDSU . Upon completing his Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner, hard working Pugsley reflected, “I [will] continue to learn, [impact] the lives of many South Dakotan’s, and pursue excellence in all that I do .”

Pugsley enjoys frequent annual hunting and fishing excursions with his Rapid City family and friends, as well as travel or a good read when time permits . With a beer in hand this “die-hard Green Bay Packer fan” enjoys life to the fullest . Pugsley can be heard to say, “Don’t forget to look up in life, enjoy the stars .”

And it well might be in the stars to grant Charles Pugsley deepest desire “…to serve the people of [South Dakota]… . Maybe some day in the distant future, I would run for governor of this great state… some day… maybe!”

One might say nursing was definitely in the stars for the Thomas Munce family . Three of his immediate family members are registered nurses at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls: wife Kristin Munce, brother Andy Munce, and sister-in-law Arika Munce . “My older brother (Andy) opened my eyes to the nursing profession,” confessed Munce, who met his wife at SDSU when both were working on their degrees in Nursing . “I choose the nursing profession as my career because I have always been drawn to the medical profession and have a passion for helping others,” responded Munce, who is currently pursuing a SDSU Master of Science in Nursing Education .

Dedicated Duo are Stenvig Scholarship RecipientsIn fact, Munce’s wife Kristin is his greatest inspiration . “She is always encouraging

me to better myself in my studies as well as my career,” Munce testified . “She pushes me to reach my full potential and always believes in me; and is an excellent mother and wife .”

“Education has the power to enhance the health care field and should be placed at the forefront of our professional responsibilities,” asserted Munce . With discipline he aspires to be that professional nurse who “exhibits exemplary clinical practices while providing individualized plans of care…” couched in empathy for patients and their families .

Munce, Project Manager in the Clinical Informatics department at Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, SD, has a multi-faceted role . Some of the departments he works with include the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Telemedicine . Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status . Telemedicine includes a growing variety of applications and services using two-way video, email, smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology .

The tech savant Munce reflected on his typical clinical informatics day . “[My day] includes educating end users on how to use Sanford’s electronic medical record (EMR),” he asserted . “I lead meetings to assure the EMR system is standardized and appropriately implemented across the Sanford enterprise and other sites who have purchased Sanford’s EMR . Clinical managers, physicians, end users, and clinical informatics from each facility or network attend these meetings .” Munce daily reviews documentation for compliance and troubleshoots issues for end users .

The EMR is a digital version of the traditional paper-based medical record for an individual . “In my clinical informatics position, I am amazed at how beneficial an EMR can be,” Munce confessed . “Whether it be a provider monitoring trends in a patient condition or nurses being able to document an entire shift worth of vital signs in a matter of seconds, the EMR is truly an amazing tool for all health care workers .”

Munce and wife Kristin’s family is complete with one-year old Lydia and Peyton, the chocolate lab . Lydia is Munce’s daily, extended release dosage of laughter; “she definitely keeps life unpredictable!” A zealous sports spectator, golfer, and a year round fisherman, Munce has also begun participating in barbeque competitions with family and friends .

Both recipients reflected on the Marianne M . Stenvig Scholarship . Not one to apply for scholarships, Munce encouraged nurses to “apply as it is a smooth process and well worth your time .” Pugsley added, “My advice … would be to get involved in your professional organizations . Nurses need a voice and that is a great way to get that voice known .”

Pugsley summarized, “It is a true honor to receive this scholarship . I am thankful for the consideration and it will help me reach my goal to receive my [Doctorate of Nursing Practice] and touch the lives of many in this great profession of nursing . Thank you!”

PAC is the acronym for Political Action Committee . The primary purpose of the PAC is to collect money to support or oppose a legislative candidate sensitive to nursing issues . This is done through group advocacy efforts .

The funds collected are referred to as either “hard money” or “soft money .” Hard money refers to the contribution given directly to the candidate; whereas money given to a political party would be soft money .

Why does SDNA have a PAC?The South Dakota Nurses Association PAC collects funds to support or oppose

state legislative candidates running for office . It does not provide funding to a particular political party . The distribution of SDNA-PAC funds occurs via delineated decision-making process of the SDNA- PAC committee with great regard given to those candidates who are supportive to nursing issues and concerns . The SDNA-PAC committee is authorized to provide endorsements with or without monetary attachment .

How can I support the efforts of the SDNA-PAC?You can support your SDNA-PAC by submitting your contributions . The cost of one

latte per month from each member would strengthen the SDNA-PAC and significantly impact its ability to influence legislation that improves health outcomes, removes barriers to care and allows nurses to provide care and services to the full extent of their scope of practice . Advocacy for patients and nurses is not new-it dates back to Florence Nightingale and continues today . The methods may have changed but the core message and purpose has not . The 2015 SDNA Nurses Convention theme is “What would Florence Nightingale Think?” While we can’t say for sure what that may be, we believe it would be a message to continue her passion and work in the area of advocacy .

How has SDNA-PAC impacted you or someone you know?SDNA and SDNA-PAC have been instrumental in the passage of legislation that has

improved the safety and health of South Dakotans . Tobacco legislation, seat belt use, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP),mandatory coverage for preventative health screenings, and practice language for nurse practitioners to name a few .

We would like to take this opportunity to encourage each nurse in the State of South Dakota to support SDNA-PAC!

SDNA-PACFAQs South Dakota Nurses Return to the Capitol City

The 40th Annual Nurses Day at the Legislature (NDL) was held in Pierre February 9-10, 2015 with over 200 nurses and nursing students from across the state in attendance . The first day of the NDL was held in Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center . The kickoff for the event was a luncheon . During lunch, Carrie Clausen Hansen, Chair of the Government Relations Committee (GRC), Deb Fischer-Clemens, SDNA N-STAT Coordinator and GRC member, and Brittany Novotny, SDNA Lobbyist, provided an overview of SDNA’s Health Policy Agenda, the legislative priorities for 2015, and Orientation and Advocacy session . The session included information on how a bill becomes a law, testifying before a legislative committee, becoming a politically active nurse and effective lobbying strategies . The SDNA Nurses Strategic Action Team (N-STAT) then provided an update on federal legislation . Deb Fischer-Clemens gave updates .

The lunch concluded with updates from Kim Malsam-Rysdon, Secretary of the Department of Health, and Lynne Valenti, Secretary of the Department of Social Services . Following the luncheon, all attendees went to the Capitol building to be recognized by both the Senate and House of Representatives .

Next, all attendees returned to Ramkota Hotel for the 2015 Legislative Update . Carrie Clausen Hansen and Brittany Novotny gave updates . The day concluded with a Legislative Chili Social where attendees worked hard to educate legislators on several important issues to nurses in South Dakota . This session was well attended by legislators, nurses and nursing students .

Tuesday morning began bright and early . Attendees were invited to the Capitol at 7:00 a .m . for a continental breakfast with the legislators . Following breakfast, many attended committee hearings throughout the morning . The day concluded with a group picture with Governor Daugaard on the Capitol stairs .

Nurses Day at the Legislature provided attendees with valuable knowledge about the legislative process and SDNA’s 2015 legislative agenda . It also provided nurses and nursing students an opportunity to network with colleagues and friends . Plans are already underway the 2016 Nurses Day at the Legislature . We hope to see you there!

This article is due mid-January to meet the deadline for the March edition of the SD Nurse, so I’ve kept the content brief and generic .

The Government Relations Committee (GRC) consists of a geographic representation of politically active nurses from across the state . The primary functions of GRC include: studying the need for legislative action; reviewing proposed federal, state and local legislation to determine the impact on nursing and overall health in SD; identifying possible legislative priorities consistent with SDNA’s Legislative Agenda and advising the Board of Directors on legislative matters .

The five basic tenants of the SDNA Legislative Agenda are to support: professional nursing practice, access to quality and affordable health care, public health, occupational and environmental health, and human rights . The full version of the Legislative Agenda can be found on the SDNA website www .sdnurses .org .

Legislative Updates were e-mailed out to membership weekly during the legislative session . We hope you found these updates helpful and informative . Thank you to everybody that responded to our Action Alerts . Legislators appreciate hearing from their constituents and we appreciate you taking the time to represent the nursing profession .

On November 10, 2014 over 50 nurses from various practice settings attended the co-sponsored South Dakota Nurses Association and South Dakota Nursing Workforce Centers conference on Leadership at All Levels in Sioux Falls . Rhonda Kemmis, the keynote speaker, talked about the “subtle” side of leadership and how we can empower and lead from anywhere . State Senator Deb Soholt, District 14, shared her leadership journey in nursing which played an important role in her desire to become a state senator . The importance of identifying and having a leader mentor who sees possibilities in you that you may not see in yourself finished the morning session . The afternoon session began with formal leaders who shared stories about their leadership journeys and who mentored them:

    • Judy Blauwet - Sr. Vice President of HospitalOperations and CNO, Avera McKennan Hospital

    • June Larson - Associate Dean, School of HealthSciences, Chair, Department of Health Sciences

    • Jessica Cherenegar - Director University of SiouxFalls School of Nursing

    • JillFranken-PublicHealthDirectorfortheCityofSioux Falls

Jerry Nagel, a Steward in the Art of Hosting Community of Practice and Co-founder of the Meadowlark Institute, led the participants in open-space discussions where a number of topics were covered, including:

    • fullauthorityforAPRNs• howarewegoingtohelpRNsstayatthebedside• workplaceviolence• identifying40emergingnurseleadersunder40

South Dakota Action Coalition• ways to increase nursing leadership and learning

    opportunities in clinics• what’supwith50+nurses• mentoringmembersofteamswhoaresemi-engaged

    or disengaged• howtodealwithdemandingleaders

All topics were discussed in small groups and then the discussions shared with all attendees .

The feedback from the open-space discussions will be integrated into the ongoing work of the Center of Nursing Workforce and the South Dakota Action Coalition . Planning has begun to host this education conference in Rapid City in 2015 .

On November 17-19, 2014 Linda Young and Darcy Sherman Justice traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to join state action coalition leaders from all states at the National Action Coalition’s Leadership and Legacy: The Future is Now conference . The conference provided great networking opportunities with other state action coalition leaders, as well as providing information on the goal to put 10,000 nurses on boards by the year 2020, a goal in direct response from the IOM report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011), which recommended nurses play more of a role on boards and commissions to help in improving the health of all Americans .

A number of state action coalitions have developed 40 under 40 programs to begin preparing selected emerging nurse leaders under 40 to lead state nursing initiatives . The South Dakota Center for Nursing Workforce and South Dakota Nurses Association are exploring the possibility of providing a 40 Under 40 Leadership Program in South Dakota in collaboration with other state nursing organizations . As this program develops more information will be shared in the SD Nurse .
