Articles must be in one of the following formats: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Illustrator, or an RTF file. Please note: many programs will allow you to save a file in an RTF format. PDF files are NOT acceptable; editor will not retype PDF files to enter into a presentable docu-ment. If you send a PDF, the quality will be poor and the type is usually fuzzy and hard to read. We reserve the right to edit, shorten for space considerations or otherwise alter the articles submitted. We also reserve the right to refuse articles that are not suitable for this publication.

2018 FLENSBURG CONFERENCE CANCELLED Despite great interest from potential attendees, we need to cancel the 2018 Flensburg Genealogy Conference for English Speakers. It was a wonderful idea that we hope to do in the future. The planning team was too small and the preparation time was simply too short to put together a quality conference. We had good enthusiasm, but we underestimated the large effort to accomplish this. We thank everyone who encouraged us along the way and also thank each potential attendee for expressing your interest. We encourage you to attend the 2018 Genealogentag (German Genealogists Conference) in Melle. Sincerely, Kent Cutkomp & Yogi Reppman

PALATINES TO AMERICA 2018 NATIONAL CONFERENCE

We have a great line up of expert speakers:

Christopher White is a genealogist, gravestone conservator, and independent historian with a special focus on local (Albany) German-American history. He holds a BA and MA in History from the University at Albany. His writings include a Master’s thesis, From Acceptance to Renunciation: Das Ende von Albanys Deutschtum. His blog is Finding Your Past: Genealogical Gleanings with the Albany Grave Digger.

Donald Schwert is a retired geologist residing in Fargo, North Dakota. His German ancestral lineages, however, all pass through Buffalo, New York—a city that he regularly visits to do research. Most recently, he has been documenting a pulse of immigration into the city from northern West Prussia, along with the surname changes of these immigrants that occurred almost immediately after their arrival.

Bruce Romanchak is a retired educator whose maternal grandparents were both direct descendants of 1710 Palatine immigrants to Germantown, NY. Working with social media, spread sheets, interactive maps and chromosome matching he is part of a group that has built a rapidly growing, active, and successful online community sharing and using traditional and genetic genealogy tools and methods.

Joseph Lieby is a past National President of the Palatines to America. He retired as a school district administrator, and has over twenty-five years’ experience in genealogical research in the New York-New Jersey area. He has spoken at na-tional and regional societies and has published articles on his research interests in the New York Palatines newsletter of which he is the editor.

Carolyn Heald has been researching Irish Palatine history and genealogy for more than three decades. Carolyn is the author of a book called The Irish Palatines in Ontario: Religion, Ethnicity, and Rural Migration and co-editor of the Irish Palatine Association Journal which is issued from Rathkeale, Ireland. She is a Director of the Ontario Genealogical Society’s Irish Palatine SIG and was a recipient of the Eula C. Lapp Award for significant contributions to Irish Palatine genealogy.

Garry Finkell is a descendant of Johann Philipp and Anna Catharina Finckel, who were among the Palatine Germans who arrived in the Colony of New York in 1710. Their descendants were Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. Most of the family went to Upper Canada (Ontario) after the war. Garry is currently President of the New York Chapter of Pala-tines to America.

Baerbel K. Johnson, AG® is a native of Germany, a professional genealogist, and works for FamilySearch as a Euro-pean research specialist. She holds degrees in Family and Local History Studies and Sociology from BYU, and has over thirty years of extensive experience in European family history research with emphasis on Germany. She has published numerous journal articles, contributed material for several books, and lectured at various conferences. Her personal inter-est is in ―putting flesh on the genealogical skeleton‖ by placing everyone within a proper social and historical context. Baerbel currently serves as Commissioner of Education and Mentoring at ICAPGen. She is a member of NGS, the Ger-man Professional Genealogists Association, and the German Society for Computer Genealogy.

John Philip Colletta, Ph.D. has been a popular lecturer in the field of genealogy for thirty years. A resident of Wash-ington, D.C., he worked at the Library of Congress and taught programs at the National Archives for twenty-one years. He is a long-time faculty member of the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (University of Georgia) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. He also teaches programs for the Smithsonian Institution and lectures at NGS and FGS con-ferences. Dr. Colletta’s publications include numerous articles, both scholarly and popular, two manuals—They Came in Ships: A Guide to Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor's Arrival Record and Finding Italian Roots: The Complete Guide for Americans—and one murder mystery/family history, Only a Few Bones, which includes instructional essays on how to write narrative family history. In 2014 The Teaching Company released his 15-lesson Great Course, ―Discovering Your Roots,‖ on DVD, CD or streaming. Dr. Colletta has received many professional awards and honors and appears frequently on podcasts and local and national radio and television.

hopefully result in a more efficient and productive society. One of my greatest pleasures was being able to visit each of the state chapters for one of their scheduled meetings and to meet the officers and talk personally with their members. I will complete that goal by attending the New York Chapter meeting during the Annual Confer-ence in Buffalo. I also hope that at some time in the future I will be able to attend one of their regularly scheduled meetings. I will be handing over the role of president to the very capable hands of former Ohio Chapter president, Roberta Newcomer. While I plan to continue to be active and engage in a couple of yet-to-be completed projects, my main interest in German genealogy has changed somewhat over the last year. I have a growing desire to focus more on education and teaching individuals how they can successfully conduct German genealogy research—regardless of whether they know any German or not. This has been a real transformation, because in the past I have not generally been comfortable speaking before an audience. However, I was sort of thrust into this role fol-lowing the unexpected death of one of our Indiana Chapter officers. Little by little, I seem to have gained more self-confidence and now look forward to giving presentations to library groups and local societies. Having focused almost exclusively on researching my mother’s emigrant family over the past 12 years, I feel that I have learned a great deal of information that I can share with others. I truly enjoy one-on-one consultations and small group dis-cussions, as well as presentations for 30-50 individuals. Following the Pal-Am conference I will be returning to Germany for about 10 weeks and will conclude that time by attending the annual Genealogentag in Melle, Ger-many. In the spring of 2019 I hope to conduct the first sessions in a Beginning German Genealogy course that the Indiana Chapter is developing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone—individual members, board members, and Resource Center staff and volunteers—for your support over the last 2 years and urge you to continue your membership and support Roberta as she takes over the leadership of Pal-Am on June 17. I also encourage you to attend the National Conference in Buffalo on June 13-16. The schedule appears to be outstanding! Vielen Dank!

FREE RESEARCH IN VIENNA Prof. Roger P. Minert of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, is pleased to announce that he will be tak-ing a group of BYU students to Vienna, Austria, in September 2018 for a three-month academic program. Several of these students are pursuing a degree in family history and genealogy and will be participating in a research in-ternship. They will compile family trees from original (primarily Catholic) church records in modern Austria and the historic territories of Bohemia(Böhmen) and Moravia (Mähren, now in the Czech Republic). These students are trained paleographers who can read old parish records. This team of researchers is currently soliciting research projects that will be carried out on a first-come, first-served basis. The work will be carefully supervised by Prof. Minert. All data will be compiled in RootsMagic and will include precise source notations. Work done in Vienna will be gratis, but clients are expected to pay the expenses of students traveling out of town to research venues. Interested parties may contact Prof. Minert via email at [email protected]. A project may be accepted if the client can identify the home town in Austria and if the needed records are available in the original collections or digital image collections. If time allows, the students will be permitted to search for an unidentified home town for a maxi-mum of three hours. Clients will be expected to support their requests by attaching scanned documents with critical genealogical

data. All data collected will remain solely the property of the clients and will not be shared by Prof. Minert’s team

with any other parties.

SALT LAKE CITY TOUR UPDATE

The Pal-Am sponsored tour will occur the week of Sept. 9-16, 2018. There has been a steady flow of requests for information. Five individuals have already paid the $100 to reserve a place. A half -dozen others have shown interest, or indicated they will be going. Many are ―repeat‖ tour attendees. There is no other library or research facility in the country with so many records available in one place! My own library experience covers the years from 1987-2016, with many visits there. Although the various floors at the library are loaded with books, microfilm, maps, and other materials of inter-est – my own focus has been the German church records on the International floor. Meeting other genealogists with the same interest, socializing and sharing information is a plus! Not only are many of the staff trained to assist, but there is the availability of local researchers who come to the library (for a fee) to help with the research, if needed. We were given a ―limited‖ number of rooms at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, so please give some consideration fort the trip. If you plan to go, please get your reservation/down payment in to me before the June 1st, early deadline. Sharon Kennedy, Tour Coordinator

For more information, or questions, please contact Sharon Kennedy, 2018 tour coordinator. Sharon has been to the Family History Library numerous times over the past 30 years,

including as a tour coordinator. E-mail: [email protected].

Perhaps you had not thought of it, but here is another option to find informa-tion on your ancestor. This listing came from the New York's Historical News-paper Archives, 1733-1922. This listing was available at the NY State Archives only, and shows letters remaining at the Post Office in Canandaigua on July 1, 1812. This list is alphabetical, and subdivided by town. Although it involves some work, it might be worthwhile to see if there is one for your own area.

This new site, called Community Groups, is a site where people can ▪ ask questions ▪ upload documents and get help with translation ▪ participate in discussions ▪ learn about upcoming webinars ▪ discover new resources Also, if people have special knowledge and skills, they can ▪ answer questions ▪ translate documents for others ▪ share new resources Of course, it is free and there is no obligation. Of particular interest for your members would be the 'Germany’ group, but we have groups for other countries as well. We hope that this tool will be a valuable resource for those interested in their family history. For more information about how to sign up and use the site, please see this link: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/FamilySearch_Genealogy_Research_Groups
