PERSONAL PARTICULARS & BACKGROUND OF YUSOF ISACK :

•born in the year 1910 in Padang Gajah, Perak.•Wanted the end of british colonial rule in singapore and malaya .•He received his primary education at Victoria Bridge School (now known as Victoria School), and secondary education at Raffles Institution.

• Was offered a scholarship to raffles College but turned it down as he wanted to be a journalist .

• As the most outstanding cadet of the School Cadet Corps, he became the first student in Singapore to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Cadet Corps.

• was raised in a humble beginning and soon became the 1st Malayan-born Yang Di-Pertuan Negara (Head of State) on 3 December 1959.

23 November 1970, Yusof Ishak passed away from heart failure, with an age of 60.

• Yusof was well known both as a journalist and the founder of the Malay newspaper Utusan Melayu prior to becoming head of state of Singapore.

•He first served as Yang di-Pertuan Negara (head of state) between 1959 and 1965, remaining in office during the time that Singapore was part of the Federation of Malaysia between 1963 and 1965.

•Following the departure of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965,he served as the First President of the Republic of Singapore until his death in 1970.

•Yusof is buried at Kranji State Cemetery.The people mourned the death of a president whom they had come to respect and love .

CONTRIBUTIONS OF YUSOF ISHAK

•Yusof Bin Ishak was president during one of Singapore's tumultuous times, when Singapore struggled for economic survival and was divided by racial conflicts. He contributed significantly to controlling the latter challenges by steadfastly

promoting multi-racialism in Singapore. •He also went out of his ways to interact with the people of all races to help restore trust amongst

the different ethnic groups during the racial riots in 1964.Yusof made the people see that skin colour

does not matter but their contributions to their shared homeland and their merit as individuals.

His portrait appears on the Singapore Portrait Series currency notes.
