Emanuel AME Church• Nine people were killed
Gun Policy• Addresses how guns need to be limited in some manner
to try and prevent these types of shootings from happening
SUBJECT CONTINUEDRacism• Obama addresses in this statement how racism is still a
factor in today’s society• He talks about this because the shooter was targeting the
specific church, because it was an mostly African American congregation
OCCASIONCharleston Church Shooting• June 17, 2015• Charleston, South Carolina• Dylann Storm Roof kills 9, including the pastor, African
Americans at Emanuel African Baptist Episcopal• Hate Crime
The Speech• June 18, 2015• Delivered by Barack Obama• At the White House
AUDIENCEPeople at the White House• Mostly reporters
More importantly, Emanuel AME Church• Mostly African American• More liberal crowd• Obama appeals to this when addressing the churh
AUDIENCE CONTINUEDAmerica• Obama wants to unite the Americans as one
• “outpouring of unity and strength”• Wants to create a sense of safety and warmth for
everyone that is watching
PURPOSEInform• Obama is informing Americans about the recent shooting
that took place in Charleston • “Reverend Pinckney, along with eight others,-- were
murdered last night.”• Wants Americans to know that everything will be okay if
they can come together and unite
TONEStern• Obama has an extremely stern tone when addressing
such a horrific event• Obama is usually comical in his speeches but cannot be
like that in his speech due to the occasion of the speech
Sorrowful• Has to seem sorrowful to let people know that he is upset
about what has happened• “deep sorrow over the senseless murders”
ETHOSAutomatic Ethos
• Obama is the president• This gives him automatic ethos in this statement• No one is questioning the authority he has, because it
is implied
LOGOSGun Control• Part of Obama’s agenda is to limit guns in America• This shooting lets him express his feelings more about this topic• He uses logos when talking about gun control by stating that
these types of mass shootings don’t happen in other advanced countries
• He feels very passionately that these types of events can be stopped by limiting guns, because many other civilized countries have already done just that
Claim of Policy: “…and for us to be able to shift how we think about the issue of gun violence collectively.”
PATHOSEmotional Appeal• Obama appeals to the emotions of his audience by using
key words to trigger a feeling such as:• Sorrow• Tragedy• Murdered• Heartache• Sadness• Anger
PATHOS CONTINUEDObama also uses pathos to create a sense of unity among the congregation using words such as:
• Love • Unity • Hope• Strength• Rise again• Peace• Fellowship
TARGETED AUDIENCESince he is somewhat addressing Emanuel AME Church he appeals to them with different statements• Gun Control – Emanuel AME Church is a more liberal crowd• Religious statements – Since he is addressing a church he
uses quotes from the Bible; also talks about how good their church is and how hard they worked to build it up
• Racism – Obama discusses racism and how it is still alive even in today’s world
By appealing to Emanuel AME Church in this way, he somewhat builds his ethos, because the Church feels like they can trust Obama much more
MY THOUGHTS ON THE STATEMENTObama’s use of appeals was done very well• Fantastic job targeting his specific audience• Creates emotion by emphasizing certain words• Also uses logos effectively to get his point across about
gun control
Creating a sense of unity amongst the audience• Obama effectively uses specific words to build a sense of
fellowship among his audience
