Handling and Shelving

When are White Gloves in style and when are they not? Wash your hands and if patron is handling fragile items

for which gloves should not be worn ask them to wash their hands before proceeding

Shelve oversized items separately if needed to keep them from being placed on spines or fore-edges

Put loose leaf or thin newsletters/publications in pamphlet binders so they do not curl

Keep items snug on shelves Teach student workers to identify shelving problems

Page 8: Preserving Louisiana Collections

Emergencies Keep a phone tree and emergency contact

information Practice building escapes such as fire drills

with staff and patrons Have a non-work e-mail where you can be

contacted as cell phones might not work during an emergency

Practice the proper use of fire extinguishers

IMLS Connecting to Collections

In 2011 an Institute of Museum and Library Services Connecting to Collections Statewide Preservation Survey was undertaken in Louisiana. The purpose of the project was to identify preservation needs across the state and to help individual institutions determine the preservation conditions within their own facilities.

The final summary report is available at:http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/research/c2c report2011.pdf

A link to the original survey questions is:http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/research/c2c surveyquestions.pdf

Our biggest preservation problems will continue to be:

Lack of storage space and shelving High humidity/mold Lack of budget/funding for preservation Lack of environmental control Lack of staff to complete preservation projects

Page 12: Preserving Louisiana Collections

Libraries need help with:

Preservation program planning Consulting – circuit riding

archivist/preservationist Funding Training Inventorying of collections
