Since 1976, the federal government has offered an income tax credit as an incentive for rehabilitating historic buildings.This tax credit program is administered in Oregon by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in conjunctionwith the National Park Service (NPS) in Washington, D.C., which makes the final decisions on project eligibility. To date,the program has stimulated more than 150 successful projects in Oregon with a total investment of over $530 million.

Historic Property Tax Incentives (http://egov.oregon.gov/OPRD/HCD/SHPO/tax_assessment.shtml ) Oregons Special Assessment of Historic Properties program offers a 15-year "freeze" of a property's assessed value

for buildings that will be significantly but appropriately rehabilitated and maintained. Applications are accepted year-round. Dating from 1973, this program is the oldest of its kind in the country.
