A school administrator or school board member perhaps? THE MESSAGE ON THE ROCK Robert Sheldon This outstanding piece has “Spring Concert” written all over it. A patriotic extravaganza that’s not too difficult, it has a true story as its inspiration. Artist Ray Sorenson of Greenfield, Iowa, discovered a rock that had, for some time, been painted with graffiti. He decided that the rock should be properly painted once and for all, and did so with truly remarkable skill. He emblazoned the sides of the rock with battle scenes from our nation’s history, including Washington’s crossing of the Delaware and a scene from 9-11. Fragments of speeches from American presidents are included and an American flag drapes the rock - now known as “Freedom Rock” The piece opens with a military sounding march that leads to a solemn section over which a narrator reads the speeches seen on the rock while a muted trumpet plays Taps in the background. The initial march then returns, with fragments of numerous patriotic melodies juxtaposed with the original melody, including the Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Battle Cry of Freedom, Yankee Doodle, The Girl I Left Behind Me, The Caisson Song, The Marine’s Hymn, Anchors Aweigh and Chester. Eventually the Battle Hymn emerges and a brief statement of America the Beautiful brings the piece to a rousing conclusion. 22278 Gr. 2 $48.00 SEE PAGE 7 FOR INFORMATION TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTE

GRADE 1-2 - CONCERT BAND MARCHES

PAGE 2

ALPINE MARCH Joseph CompelloCultural marches for young bands are hard to comeby and that’s what makes Alpine March unique. It’sin a Bavarian style (think Oktoberfest) and is a goodtool for teaching eighth note-quarter note groupings incut-time. There is a trumpet solo and section soli andyour snare drummers will need to be on top of theirflams and rolls. A nice change of pace march!

YPS27 Gr. 2 $50.00

BARNUM WOODS MARCH Carl StrommenStrong rhythm work and a catchy melody make this aquality sounding march for young bands. Plenty ofeighth note, dotted eighth-sixteenth and eighth-quarter-eighth syncopated rhythms are used throughout. Solidreinforcement of concert F major.

FPS40 Gr. 1½ $45.00

BIG BRASS ON PATROL Arr. Robert SheldonTeach cut-time, staccato and accent articulations, andget those fingers movin’ with Sheldon’s straightforward arrangement of F. W. Meacham’s AmericanPatrol. Use this opportunity to expose your studentsto a wonderful standard march.

22257 Gr. 1½ $42.00

DISCOVER AMERICA MARCH Ken HarrisNothing sounds more quintessentially American thana march. Harris has composed a march that is greatto showcase a young band. The melodic line is lightand with a lilt. Percussion drives this march alongwith a catchy low brass countermelody. Great pieceto introduce cut-time.

015-3358-00 Grade 2 $40.00

HONOR ROLL MARCH Mark WilliamsReinforce concepts with your first year students usingMark WIlliams’ Honor Roll March. In 2/4, Williamsincorporates the use of repeats, multiple endings and aD.C. al Fine into a piece with limited range, divisiparts for more advanced players and eighth noterhythms. Appropriate for first or second year players.

22245 Gr. 1 $40.00

POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE MARCHES Edward Elgar/Mark WilliamsThemes from Elgar’s four processional marches, including the traditional graduation march have beenarranged for young band and remain recognizable. Usethis arrangement as a concert piece, or employ theoptional D.C. and gain some good P.R. by playing anelementary/kindergarten graduation or an awardsceremony. Concept reinforcement includes repeats, first and second endings, staccato articulation, keychange (from concert Eb to Bb), D.C. (optional) andeighth note and sixteenth note rhythms. A very usableand teachable piece!

22252 Gr. 1½ $42.00

RAPP’S WOODS RAMBLE Robert LongfieldIf you have a solid junior high band, need a piece thatmakes full use of your percussionists, or are lookingto push your students to the next level, check out Rapp’sWoods Ramble. About the woods adjacent to thecomposer’s childhood home, this tuneful march passesthe melody through all of the winds. Multiple endings, repeats and key signatures are used (concert Bb, Eb,Ab). Your percussionists will be kept busy utilizingtheir skills on bells, timpani (3; tuned F, Bb, Eb), snaredrum, bass drum, crash cymbals and sand blocks. Anice alternative to standard marches.

B1207 Gr. 2 $55.00

TORCH OF VALOR Arr. Andrew BalentAndrew Balent has succeeded in making this marchaccessible to young players. In cut-time, the notevalues center around around whole, half and quarternotes; however, the oppportunity to teach dottedquarter-eighth rhythms presents itself in a melodic way.Balent’s arrangemnt has an introduction ala Stars andStripes Forever and uses bells, timpani (2), crashcymbals and triangle in addtion to snare and bassdrums. Great way to reinforce cut-time!

AS ALL THE HEAVENSWERE A BELL Jay BocookCommissioned as a tribute to the Fire De-partment of New York City, this immenselymoving work was premiered at an emo-tional performance in Manhattan this pastMarch. Using a sensitive treatment of themelody from America (My Country, ‘Tis ofThee) it includes haunting vocal colors, cued in horns. The nation in turmoil is de-picted in an intensely driving and power-ful section which evolves marvelously intoa full-blown treatment of America with cho-rus and band. A truly magnificent musicaltribute to the heroes of 9/11. 40 chorus partsare included in the arrangement.
