INDIC CALENDAR FACTS
Why some Indian festivals fall on different dates every year?
As this Indic calendar shows, the bharathiya tradition has evolved a luni-solar calendar. We have lunar based, solar based and luni-solar based timekeeping for festivals. For example, Deepavali or Diwali or Naraka Chaturdasi is celebrated on the Chaturdasi that falls on the Krishna Paksha of Aippasi (Ashweja or Ashwina) Masa. Where as Makara Sankranti or Pongal only looks at the sun's entry into Makara Rasi.
