LongSynopsis

Itis1964andoutsideaParisartgallery,thedishevelled64yearoldAlbertoGiacometti(GeoffreyRush)

haswalkedoutofhisownexhibitionopening.HisAmericanfriend,theconvivialandimpeccablyturned

out40-somethingJamesLord(ArmieHammer)comestofindhim.

GiacomettimusesthatLordhasneverposedforhim.AlthoughLordsayshehastoleaveforNewYorkin

acoupleofdays,GiacomettireassureshimthatitwillbequicksoLordagreestositforaportrait.

LordarrivesatGiacometti’sramshacklestudiowithitsadjoiningbedroomandricketystaircase,all

leadingoffaclutteredcourtyard.AnnetteArm(SylvieTestud),Giacometti’stiredlookingthoughmuch

youngerwifegreetsLordwarmly.Giacomettiworksonasculpturebutlamentstohisbrotherandright

handman,Diego(TonyShalhoub)thatthepieceisamiserablefailure.

GiacomettistartsworkontheportraitbuttellsLordthathewillneverbeabletopainthimashesees

him.Healsoissuestheominouswarningthatitisimpossibletofinishaportrait.Lordremindshimthat

hehasaflighttocatch,buttheartistreassureshim.

Caroline(ClémencePoésy),aprostitutewhoisGiacometti’slover,museandmodelarrivesandLord

smilesasthepairkissandgiggle.LordseesthatAnnetteisalsowatching.Giacomettihasbeenopenly

havinganaffairforfouryears.

Lordwritesanaccountofallthatgoeson.GiacomettiandCarolinegoouttohavefunwithfriendsand

drinkwineintheirlocalrestaurantbeforefallingintobedtogether.Giacomettithengetsupandreturns

tohisstudiotoworkthroughthenight.Asdaybreaks,hecrawlsintobednexttohiswifeandturnsthe

lighton,asheisafraidofthedark.Thisishisroutine.

Thefollowingday,anunseasonablywarmMarchmorning,LordmeetsGiacomettiwhoistellinghis

dealerthathewillneversellhislatestportrait.HeplanstogiveittoLord.Backbehindthecanvas,

Giacomettistartstoshowthefirstsignsoffrustration.Heexclaimsthatitisimpossibletogetthe

portraitright.Hewillneedanextradayortwo.Lordisleftwithnochoicebuttochangehisflight.He

can’tunderstandhowGiacometticandoubthisabilitysogreatly,especiallyashebecomesevermore

successful.Theartistrespondsthatthereisnobetterbreedinggroundfordoubtthansuccess.Hefeels

thateverythinghehaseverexhibitedhasbeenunfinished–it’simpossibleforhimevertobesatisfied.

Diegoarrivesfromthegallerywithahugebundleofcash.Giacomettipeelsoffsomenotesforhis

brother,asmalleramountforhimselfandheasksLordtohelphimfindahidingplacetherest.

LordwitnessesGiacomettidoingbusinesswithadealer,tradingsomeofhisnewworkforhisold

drawings,atransactionthatsurprisesLord,buttheartistcan’tletgoofhisoriginalworks,andtheart

worldloveshismostrecentwhichtheyseeasiconic.Ashepaints,Giacomettigetsmorefrustratedand

exclaimsthathedoesn’tevenknowifheshouldcontinue.

ThetwogoouttoeatwithAnnette,butonceintherestaurant,GiacomettiseesCarolineanddisappears

tositwithher,muchtoLord’sdiscomfort.Annetteisusedtobeingabandonedbutsheishurtand

leaves.

Dayfourand,whilstLordfeelsthepaintingisgoingwell,Giacomettisayshesimplycannotreproduce

whathesees.Giacomettisayshejustneedsanotherweek.Lordchangeshisflightagain.

AnnetteisinherbedroomwithIsakuYanaihara,aJapanesefriendwhohadmodelledforGiacometti

andwhotheartistencouragedintoanaffairwithhiswife.Meanwhile,Carolineisinthestudiocajoling

Giacomettiintobuyingheranexpensivecar.Muchtoherdelight,finallyheagrees.

DiegotellsLordhow,asaboy,heusedtolovewatchinghisbrotherandfathersculptingtogether.He

didn’tchoosetojointhemashewashappiergettingintomischief.Lordsayshewasthesame,busy

beingthrownoutofvariousinstitutions.

Giacomettiburstsin,violentlyrippingupdrawings.Hehasbeentoseealithographerabouttransferring

hisartontostone,buthehasbeentoldthatthepaperistoooldforthisprocesstowork.Lordtriesto

savethedrawings,someofwhichhavebeenincludedaccidentally.Diegojustwatches;heisusedtothis

tumultuousbehaviour.Later,DiegopresentsLordwithoneofhisownsculpturesandexplainsthat

Carolinehasgonemissing,whichexplainstheartist’sparticularlycrazybehaviour.

GiacomettiturnstoAnnettetomodelforhim,inthefreezingcoldstudio,butshedoesn’tpleasehim.In

herfrustration,Annettedespairsthatshegiveshimeverythingbuthegiveshernothing.Hedoesn’t

understandwhatmoreshecouldpossiblywantfor,beyondaroofoverherhead.Butforherthisisnot

thehome,northatmarriage,thatshelongsfor,plussheseeshimgivingallofhismoneytoCaroline.In

response,hethrowssomecashatherbeforestormingouttosearchthestreetsforhislover.

CarolinereappearsassuddenlyasshedisappearedandthedelicatebalanceofGiacometti’slifeis

restored.

Lordisonthephonejustifyingtosomeonebackhomewhyhemustdelayhisreturnyetagain.Although

GiacomettiishappytohaveCarolineback,aftertwoweeksofposing,Lordseesthestrugglethat

Giacomettifacestoexpressinvisualtermstherealitythathesees.Theywalkthroughthestreets

togetherandtalkabouttheiracquaintancePicassoandthatartist’sowninsecurities.Theirnextsitting

goesevenmorebadlyandGiacomettihastostopbeforehedestroysthework.Lordlamentsthe

endlessnessoftheprocesstoDiego,whoempathiseswithhisbrotherbutadvisesthatLordshouldnot

changehisflightagainandshouldinsteadsetadeadline.

Annettehasusedhermoneytobuyanewdress.Herhusbandhaspromisedtotakehertotheopening

nightofChagall’sceilingattheOperaHouse.Carolinejubilantlyscreechesupinherbeautifulnew

convertiblecar.SheinsistsontakingLordandGiacomettiforawhiteknuckledrivethatbothamuses

andterrifiesthetwomen.

Giacomettifallsillandcan’ttakeAnnettetotheOperahouse.Shecaresforhimthroughhissickness,

whilstCaroline’spimpsmakesurethatsheiskeptbusywithotherclients.Onceherecovers,Giacometti

hasanewleaseoflifeandheagreestofinishthepaintinginfourmoresittings.

Hisstudiohasbeenransacked,whichDiegotellsLordisawarningfromthepimps.Lordaccompanies

Giacomettitoameetingwiththesemenwherehepaysthemoff,nonchalantlygivingthemwaymore

moneythantheyhavedemandedforCaroline’sservices:bothposingandforsex.

WhenGiacomettireturnstohisportrait,hebecomesmoredejectedand,seizingalargebrush,he

obliteratesthepainting,sayingheis“undoing”it.Lordsayshehadthoughtitlookedverygood,butthis

onlyreinforcesGiacometti’sintent.

Theyworkonthepaintingforthreemoredaysandattheendofeverysession,Giacomettireachesfor

thebrushandwipesouteverythinghehasachieved.Lordchangeshisflightonceagainbutthentells

Diegohehasaplan;Lordhasnoticedapatternintheartist’sbehaviourandhasmadeuphismindto

stoptheworkwhenhesensesGiacomettitobeathismostpositiveandbeforethebigbrushcomes

out.Atthenextsitting,Lordimplementstheplan,leapingupattheexactmomentanddeclaringthe

paintingtobethebestithaseverbeen.Giacomettiistakenbysurpriseandconcursthatthiscouldbe

thebeginningofsomething,butLordbrightlyinsiststhatno,itistheend.HewillleaveParisthevery

nextday.Hecheerfullyproclaimsthatithasbeenhisverygreathonourtositfortheartist.

LordandGiacomettitakeafinalwalktogether,Giacomettiinsistingthathisgoodfriendmustcome

backtoParissothattheycancontinuetheirworkastheyhavemade“some”progress.

However,thisistobetheirlastmeeting;Giacomettidiesashorttimelater,havingwrittentoLordto

tellhimhowmuchhehadenjoyedtheirtimetogether.Giacometti’sfinalportraitispackedupand

shippedofftoanexhibitioninNewYork.

ProductionStory

GailEganproducedFINALPORTRAITforPotboilerProductions,alongsideNikBowerforRiverstone

PicturesandIlannGirardforArsamInternational.ShecametotheprojectwhenStanleyTuccishowed

herthescreenplaythathehadwritten,adaptedfromamemoirwrittenbyJamesLord,‘AGiacometti

Portrait’.

ThememoirfeaturesthelastmeetingbetweenAlbertoGiacomettiandJamesLord,ayounger,wealthy

AmericanwhohadbefriendedtheartistononeofhisregulartripstoParis.Thetwohadbeenfriends

forovertenyearswhenGiacomettiaskedLordifhewouldsitforhiminwhatwastobecomehisfinal

portrait.Giacomettipromiseditwouldonlytakeanafternoonbutthesittinglastedforanintense18

sessions.TheprocessendedonlywhenLordconvincedGiacomettithathecouldaddnomore,nortake

anythingawayfromthisparticularcanvas.GiacomettigavetheportraittoLordashehadpromised.He

wantedtopaintanotherbuthediedtwoyearslater,andthetwomenwerenevertomeetagain.The

paintingwassoldin1990forover$20,000,000.

GiacomettiwasafavouriteartistofEgan’sandwhenshediscoveredthatGeoffreyRushwasalready

attachedtoplaythelead,sheeagerlyreadthescript.Assheremembers,“Itwasbeautifullywrittenand

seemedtometocapturetheessenceofwhatitistobeanartist.IloveditandaskedStanleyifIcould

comeonboardtohelphimmakeit.”

Therestofthecastwasbroughttogetherbycastingdirector,NinaGold,includingArmieHammer,who

seemedperfecttoplayLord(if,Tucciwasconcerned,hewasalittletoogoodlooking).Egan

remembers:“ArmieseemedliketheperfectfoilforGeoffrey’sGiacometti.HeandStanleymetandthat

wasthat;Armiewasin.”Shecontinues,“StanleyverymuchwantedAnnetteandCarolinetobeplayed

byFrenchactresses.WewereincrediblyluckythatSylvieTestudandClémencePoésybothreadand

lovedthescript,andagreedtojoinus.”TestudtakestheroleofAnnette,Giacometti’slongsuffering

wife,andPoésy,theprostitutewhobecameGiacometti’smuse,obsessionandlover.

TonyShalhoubwasTucci’sfirstchoiceforDiego.Eganexplains,“Ididn'tknowTonyandhadsuggested

toStanleythatheshouldplayDiego.ButStanleystoodfirmonnotwantingtoactinthefilmbutto

concentrateondirecting.”Sheconcludes,“RightfromtheverybeginningStanleywantedTonyandof

coursehewascompletelyright;Tonywaswonderful.”

Onthecrew,Eganagainbelievesthattheywereveryfortunate,assheexplains,“Wewereincredibly

luckythatsuchatalentedcrewwereavailabletous.I’msureitwasdowntoStanley’scharmandthe

beautifulscript.

ThefilmwasshotoveronlyfourweeksatTwickenhamStudiosandonlocationaroundLondon,which

stoodinforinforParisin1964.AkeypartofmakingthefilmworkwasrecreatingGiacometti’sstudio,

wheremostoftheactiontakesplace.Thiswasfilmedonaset,createdbyProductionDesignerJames

Merifield,ratherthanarealstudiobeingusedasthelocation,whichmayhaveprovedacheaperoption.

Eganexplainsthatworkingonaset,“AllowedDirectorofPhotographyDannyCohenandPaul

McGeachan,theGaffer,todesignalightingrigthatmeantwecouldshootatanytimeofday.Wecould

haveclouds,sunshine,rainandmovetheactionfrommorningtoeveningtomorningagainatthepress

ofabutton;itwasgenius.”

Merifieldhadanumberofveryaccuratereferencesforthesetasmanyphotographsandfilmsofthe

studioexist,sohewasabletorecreatethespacewithgreataccuracy.Itwasmadealittlebiggerto

allowactorsandcrewtomovearound,butineveryotherwayitwasveryauthentic.“Itbecamevery

apparent,veryearlyon,thatthesetislikeanotheractor”,explainsMerifield.“It’sanotherleading

player.Ihopeitcomesacrossashavingapulsetoo.”

Whilstthefilmwasverymuchaboutthecharacters,theirrelationshipsandoneparticularworkofart,

therestoftheartworksshowninthebackgroundofthestudioneededtohaveadegreeofauthenticity.

FourartistsweretakenontorecreatethepaintingsandthesculptureswhichGiacomettiwouldhave

hadinhisstudioatthattime.TheGiacomettiFoundationwasverykeentoensurethehistorical

accuracyoftheartworksinthestudio.RepresentativestravelledovertothesetfromFranceand

workedwiththeartiststoensureauthenticity.

Havingestablishedthestudio,theproductionthenhadtofindcornersofLondonwheretheycould

realisticallyrecreatelocationsthatwouldworkas1960sParis.Merifieldandhisteamfoundrestaurants,

theatres,cafesandotherspacesalloverLondon,whichtogetherwithsomewellplacedperiodvehicles,

alongwithsomevisualeffects,meantthatLondoncouldpassconvincinglyforParis.

Thecostumeswerepivotalindefiningtheverydistinctcharacters.CostumeDesigner,LizaBracey

explainsthatinallthereferencestoGiacometti,heisalwaysseenwearingthesameuniformoftweed

jacket,shirt,tieandtrousers.AsBraceypointsout,“Hisclotheslooklikeheworethemallthetime;he

livedinthem.Hewasquiteshambolic,wornanddusty.”

AlthoughtherearestrikingsimilaritiesbetweenRushandGiacometti’sappearance,intermsof

physiquetheyareverydifferent,andtheactorrequiredcostumestocompletethetransformation.

Braceyexplains,“He’stallandthin,andGiacomettiwasshortandwide,sowe’vepaddedhimandtried

togivehimwidertrousersandthingsjusttocompacthisstature.”

Physically,LordistheoppositeofGiacometti,beingimmaculatelyattired,thoughhehastowearthe

sameclothesallthewaythroughbecausethiswashisportraitoutfit.Thetensionbuildsbetweenthe

twomenasthepaintinggoesonandLord’slightcolouredtrousersstarttoshowthedirt.AsBraceyputs

it,Lordisfromaverydifferentworldtotheothercharacters,eventhough,asshestates,“bytheend

there’sdirtonhisclothe;theydon’treallybelonginthatstudio.”

Annettewhowhenshewasyoungerusedtolookverypretty,bythe1960shadbecomefrumpy.Bracey

continues,“It’sdifficulttomakeSylvieTestudfrumpy,butjustasthestudioandadjoiningliving

quarterslookcold,dirtyanduncomfortable;SylvieTestudendsupinlotsoflayersandbigwoollen

cardigans.Bycontrast,Carolinebringsawholenewdimensiontothecolourpalletofthefilm.Bracey

explains,“Shebringsyouthintoit,andlightness.”Shegoeson,“Everybodyelsehasgotfairlydark

clothes,andCarolineistheonlyonewhowearsabitofcolour.”Braceyconcludes,“She’sthelifeofit,

costumewise.”

Therewerenumerouschallengeswithbringingthisstorytothescreen,andonatightbudget,butthe

filmrisesabovethese.AsGailEganconcludes,“Whenyouhaveacastwhonevercomplainandcouldn't

domoretoaccommodate,andacrewwillingtogowayfurtherthantheextramile,anythingis

possible.”

InterviewwithStanleyTucci(WriterandDirector)

Idon’tcareforbiopics.Idon’tknowhowyoucramsomebody’slifeintoanhourandahalfortwo

hours.Itjustbecomesanevent-drivenfilmwhereasthisisacharacter-drivenfilm.Andwehopefully

gleanasmuch,ifnotmore,aboutthepersonandhislifefromfocusingonthisveryfiniteperiodoftime.

I’veculleddifferentexperiencesandcircumstances,eventsfromGiacometti’slife,andputtheminto

thesetwoweekstocreatealifeinmicrocosmsothatyougetasenseofwhohewasinsideandoutside

ofthatstudio

I’mabigfanofGiacometti’swork.Ialwayshavebeen.Ibegantoreadaboutit,includingthisbook,‘A

GiacomettiPortrait’.Icarriedwithmefor25yearsorsomethinglikethat.

Iwrotethisfilmtenyearsago,ormore.Iamalwaysinterestedinthecreativeprocess:whyyoudo

whatyoudoasanartist,andalsotheartist’srelationshiptotheirworkandtosociety.Thatcreative

processisverywelldescribedbyLordandbyGiacomettiinthislittlebook.It’sarguablyoneofthebest

bookseverywrittenaboutthecreativeprocessandIthinkanybody,inanyartform-itshouldbelikea

bibleforthem.

Giacomettiwasoneofthemostarticulateartistsofhistime.Hewasalsoincrediblyfunny;hehada

greatsenseofirony.

GeoffreyRushisagreatactorandIalwaysadmiredhim.OfcoursewhenyoulookatGeoffreyyousee

distinctlythatthereisaresemblancetoGiacometti.Therewasstillafairamountwehadtodotoreally

gethimtolooklikeGiacomettibecausehisphysicalselfisdistinctlydifferentfromGiacometti,hisbody

isdifferent.Geoffreyisverythinandlanky,andGiacomettiwasshortandstockyandmuscular,sowe

workedthatout,andwealsobroadenedhisface.BecauseGeoffreyimmerseshimselfintocharacters

andisincrediblycharmingonscreen,andveryfunny,hewastheperfectperson.

ItwasveryhardtofindtherightpersonfortheroleofLord.EventuallysomeonementionedArmie

Hammer,andIrememberedseeinghiminacoupleofmoviesandlikinghim,andIthoughthewas

reallyperfectforit.Wetalkedandhelovedthescript.HehaddonealotofreallybigHollywoodmovies,

andIthinkhewasreadytodiveinanddoasmall,independentfilm.Andhewaswonderful.

TonyShalhoubisoneofthegreatestactorsever.IhaveadifficultyimaginingnotworkingwithTonyin

everyprojectthatIdo.He’ssogood.HeplayedmybrotherinBigNight;hewasinthesecondmovieI

hardroletocast.OfcoursewehadtohavesomeonewhospokefluentFrench,andshespeaksEnglish

verywell.She’ssotechnicallyadeptwithoutsacrificinganybitoftruth.Youcoulddoonetakewithher;

shewasincredible,almostlikeaforceofnature.Andshe’salsoveryfunny.

Giacomettineverwantedtogetmarried.HemetAnnetteduringthewarwhenhewaslivinginGeneva.

Shewasquiteabityoungerandtheyendedupfallinginlove;shehadabrightspiritandshemadehim

veryhappy,andshedotedonhim.ShemovedtoPariswithhim,andconvincedhimtomarryher,and

hedidn’twantto.Butheneverstoppedfrequentingbrothels,andseeingotherwomen.Hedidn’twant

thetrappingsofdomesticity;hewantedonlytodohiswork,andhewantedcompanionship,andhe

wantedsex;andtheywerecompletelyseparatethings,hecompartmentalisedallthosethings.Andthat

wasn’twhatshewanted,sothereweretheseconstantarguments.

ClémencePoésyisincredible!She’sagreatactressandshe’sjustsostunningyouneverwanttostop

lookingather.Herfaceissodifferentfromeveryangletoowhichmakesherevenmoreinteresting,and

shewasveryplayful.IwantedCaroline[Giacometti’smistress]tobringacompletelydifferentenergy

andbreakopenthiskindofquiet,almostsepulchre-likefeelingthatwasinthestudio.

GiacomettimetCarolinetowardstheendofhislife.Hecarriedonanaffairwithherforthreeorfour

years.AndCarolinebroughtakindofenergy,andbyallaccountsshewasveryfunnyandverybeautiful.

Andshewasdangerousbecauseshemovedinthisunderworldofgangstersandthieves,andheloved

allthat.Andhegavehersomuchmoney;heboughtthingsforherthathewouldneverbuyforhiswife.

HewasincrediblygenerouswitheveryoneexceptforhiswifeandAnnette,forsomereason,accepted

this.Theylivedthisverystrangelife.Heencouragedhiswifetohaverelationshipswithothermen,one

maninparticular,aJapanesefellow, IsakuYanaihara,whobecameafriendandwasoneofGiacometti’s

primarymodels.Tome,Ithinkheshould’vejustlethiswifego,andyetatthesametimeshewasn’t

interestedingoing.Sheneededitasmuchasheneededit.Thisissomekindofexistentialtorturethat

theywerebothinflictingoneachother.

GiacomettiandhisbrotherDiegowerealwaysgoodfriends.Theywereverydifferentinthesensethat

Giacomettiwasmuchmoredemonstrativeandworehisheartonhissleeve.Diegowasmoretaciturn

andremoved;nobodyreallyknewalotabouthispersonallife.Hewasanartistinhisownright;hewas

clearlyverysmartandtalented.Heendedupmovinginwithhisbrotherandbecamehisright-handman

untilhisbrotherdied.Butinthemeantime,hewasmakinghisownart,whichwasmoredecorative;

theybothhaddonethisduringthe1930s-theydesignedvases,lightingandfurnituretomakemoney

whentheywereyounger.

Tomeitmakesperfectsensesthatnomatterwhatyoudowhenyou’recreatingsomething;youalways

knowthatwhenyoufinishamovie,ascript,apainting,you’realwaysrethinking.Butyouhavetoletit

go,andmoveontosomethingelse.Thegoodthingaboutpaintingisthatyoucanalwaysgobackandfix

themupalittlebit.I’mfascinatedbythat,thatsortofperpetualdissatisfaction.AndGiacomettihasa

greatline:“whatbetterbreedinggroundfordoubtthansuccess.”It’sabsolutelytrue.

Youwanttobeastruthfulaspossible,butofcourseyouhavetotakepoeticlicence.Ifeelwe’vebeen

astruthfultohimandhisstoryaswecouldbe.IhadgottentoknowJamesLord,whichishowIgotthe

rightstothebookoriginally,andLordwouldtellmelotsofstoriesaboutGiacometti.Sothatwas

incrediblyhelpful.PlusI’dreadjustabouteverythingthathadeverbeenwrittenabouthim.Alotofour

dialogueiswhatLordrecounted.

JamesMerifieldisanincredibledesigner.Wehadaverysmallbudget.Luckily,CGIisgettingmore

sophisticated,andlessexpensive,sowewereabletodosomeofthat.Ifyoucanhavethatyousellthe

ideathatyou’reinParis.Butalso,obviouslythemostimportantthing,becausethisiswheremostofthe

actiontakesplace,isGiacometti’sstudio,andrecreatingthatastruthfullyaspossible.Wemadeafew

changes,butit’sasclosetotherecreationofhisstudioasyoumighteverget.

Recreatingtheartworkwasanotherreallydifficulttask.Jameshiredthreeyoungartistswhocould

recreatethesculpturesthatwecouldassumewereinhisstudioduringthoseweeks.Andthatwasquite

atask,buttheydiditbrilliantly.

Asanactor,youneedtohaveacostumethatisgoingtomakeyoufeelcomfortableandtohelpyoufind

thatcharacter.Thepalettewasveryspecific;it’saveryneutralpalette.Carolinewouldgiveusasplash

ofcoloureitherinherlipstickorhercoat.AlsoAnnettehasamustardcolouredcoatthat’sdescribedin

anumberofdifferentbooks.BecauseGiacometti’sworkisveryneutral,wewantedtocreatethat

palettewiththeselittlesplashesofcolour.

DannyCohenwasamazingbecauseIdidn’twanttofussaroundwithlightsontheset.Iliketomove

veryquickly;Iwantedthingstobeasspontaneousaspossiblefortheactorssowehadtoshootvery

quickly.Hewasabletolightthesetsobeautifully,soquickly.Atthepushofthebuttonitwouldbecome

dusk,itwouldbecomedaylight,orlateafternoon.Ihadtheseincrediblepeople,Catherinealsowho

wasdoingthemakeup.Wewerevery,verylucky.

WhatIhopeaudienceswilltakeawayistolearnmoreaboutGiacometti,andtoseethecreative

process.Andalsothatanartistisveryseriousaboutwhatheorshedoes,butalsoatthesametime

there’sthiswonderfulsenseofhumour,asenseofironywithinthatprocess.Andthatprocessnever,

ever,everstops.AndjustgiveaninsightintowhatIthinkisanamazingprocessthatartistshave

struggledwithforthousandsofyears.

IreadthescriptandIthoughtitwasabitofagem.Stanley,veryflatteringly,saidthishasgotyourname

alloveritandIwantyoutodoit.It’saverynice,verysmartpieceofcataloguingofLord’sexperienceof

sittingforapersonwhoatthatstagewasquiteafamouslivingicon.Hegivesawonderfullyinsightful

analysisofthedilemmasinthecreativeprocess.

ArmieisalmostperfectasLord-thisguyisliketheclone.Hebringsaverynatural,veryauthentic

qualitytothisguy’sAmericanenergyinthisEuropeanartworld.It’sanicethingtobounceoff.

GiacomettiandDiego’sisaverysymbioticrelationshipandtheyhadaverynaturalantiauthoritarian

attitude.ThefilmhasanicesenseofnaturalcomedyandthatisoneofTonyShalhoub’sgifts.Helooks

forthepuretruthofwhatcanmakethemostbenignmomentfascinatingandamusing,justbecauseof

thehumanfrailtyrevealedorthebrotherlyconnection.

SylvieTestudbringssuchfantastic,natural,veryFrenchenergytotheroomandinthisparticularlittle

sliceoftheirlivestogetheroveraperiodof18days;sheisfraughtwitheverythingshehashadto

endureabouthiswayward,eccentric,selfobsessedways.Stanley’sscriptcapturesthebiggerpictureof

Stanleyissodeterminedthatthisdoesn’tfallintothetrapofbeingthebiopicofthegreatmomentsof

themaestro’swork.Therearenoeurekamoments,it’salltheshabbyandmessybitsthatgoonina

verymessyandshabbyatelierwherehelivedandworkedforyears.Stanley’sgotagreatsenseof

rhythm,seeingpeopledealwithcelebrityandthetorturousprocessofmakingart.He’sverygoodwith

thecamera-workingwithDannyCohenandshootingfast,it’salmostguerrillafilmmaking.Itfeelslike

flyonthewallkindofcamerawork-quiteartful.

It’srefreshingtoseesomebodywhoistotallydenyingwhatwenowknowascelebrityculture.Inalotof

theinterviewsthatGiacomettidoeshesays:forgetaboutthemetaphysicalandexistentialquestions,

I’mjustmessingaroundwithsomeplaster,fiddlingaroundwithsomeclay.Idon’tknowwhereI’m

going,I’mjustplayingandthensomehowitemergesintosomething.

Ithinkfromacontemporaryperspective,peoplewouldcomeinwithverychallengingmorality

questions.Giacomettiknowshehascertainmanicimpulsesthatallowhimtoexistandhejustpursues

them,notinamalevolentoraselfishway,hejustdoeswhatheneedstodo.

Stanley’sscriptdrawsyouintothemicroscopicbanalitiesofcharactersthatarevividlyetched,whohave

thislevelofcelebrityandacademicappraisal,fameandfortune.Buttheirlivesstumblealonginapretty

ordinary,banalway.There’safairamountofnaturalcomedythatcomesoutofthat.

facetomakehimwrinkledandweathered.Andofcoursehe’sanimmensetalent.

IloveGiacometti’swork.Hissketchesaregreat,hisoriginalwatercoloursaregreat,buthissculptures-

thereissomethingmagicalaboutthem.They’regreat.

inmyresearchLordspentmoretimewithDiegothanhedidactuallywithAlbertoandthat’sinthis

script-youseethelittlesideglances,youcanseethatJamesandDiegohaveaverysortofseparate

emotionallifethanJameshaswithAlberto,andeventhatDiegohaswithAlberto.Theymakeupaside

ofthistrilateralrelationshipinthismovie.It’sfuntoseeallthesegrownmensometimesactinglike

childrenandplayingoffofeachotherandtryingtoirkeachotherandfeedingoffeachother.

IthinkTonyShalhoubismyfavouritepersoninthewholeworld.Tonyhascreatedaninternallifefor

Diego.It’sthisreallykindofcompellingthing,watchingthisstillbutverydeep,emotionallifeofDiego

andyoucanjusttellhe’sgotahistoryandapastbutthere’slikeamysterytohim.

Clémenceisfantastic.There’sthisthingabouther,thiswonderfuljoiedevivre.Andshe’sspeaking

FrenchandthentheycallcutandsheswitchestospeakingEnglishwithaperfectaccent.Weshota

scenewhereshecameinanddidn’tsayanything,shejuststoodinthedoorwayandthelookonher

facetoldathousanddifferentstoriesanditwasgreat.Apartfrombeingabsolutelygorgeous,she’sso

talented.

SylvieTestudissofun,she’ssofreeandshe’ssouninhibited,youwatchherjustliveandsheistotally

un-phasedandnon-plus-edbyallthenegativitythatGiacomettimightthrowather,shejustmoveson

anddoesherthing.It’safuncharacter.

I’vealwaysthoughttheonethingthatshinesthroughStanley’sworkmorethananythingelseishis

intelligenceandhowquickheseems.Andtobedirectedbysomeonewhoisalsosuchanaccomplished

actor-heknowshowtotalktoyou.

Itmightjustbeapartofbeinganartist,thatsortofperpetualdissatisfaction.Becauseifyoudidapiece

andyouwerelike,wow,it’sperfect,itmightnotbeenoughimpetustokeepyougoing.Itseemslike

Giacomettiviewstheworldentirelydifferentlythanallofus.He’stryingtocreatehisartintheway

It’sabouthow,asbrilliantasGiacomettiwas,hewastorturedbyfrustrationandselfloathingandwhat

heperceivedasaninabilitytocreatewhathewassettingouttodo;tocapturenatureandcomeup

withkindofanewform.Iwasstruckbythemanandthestory,andofcoursetheopportunitytowork

withStanleyagain,andtobeabletohangoutwithhim.

IcanseewhyStanleyconnectedtothismaterial,andIthinkalotofactorsandwritersandallkindof

creativetypeswill,becauseweallhavethathauntingsenseofselfdoubt.AndIthinkpeoplewhoare

notinthecreativeworldwouldhavethiskindofexperience.Ithinkweallhavethosemoments:dowe

notionanditconsumedhim-inaway,itmadehisworkthatmuchmorebrilliant,becausehewasso

Diegowasanartistinhisownrightandanincrediblesculptor,buthedevotedhislifeandtimetohis

brother.AndIthinkbecauseherealisedAlbertowassoincrediblyspecial,Diegowantedtoseehim

reachhismaximumpotential.Idon’tthinkGiacometticouldhavedoneitwithoutDiego.SoDiegowas

theretoprovidethisworkforprobablylittleornomoney.Andthecharacterisveryprivate,quiet,but

definitelyputinhistimeasamodelandbecauseofthatsympathisedwithwhatLordwasgoing

Armieisjusttremendous-everydayhe’sjustsuchabrightlight.Greatlooking,alwayssmiling,he’s

quiteaforce-averyfunnyguy.Andyouhavetokeepasenseofhumouraboutthiskindofwork,

especiallyonthisproject,becauseittapsintothatpartofus,thatprivateparanoiaweallcarrywithus

aboutourownability.

I’veworkedwithStanleysomanytimes.HedirectedmeinaBroadwayplayaboutfiveyearsago.

We’veactedtogetheronstage,infilm,ontelevision.Soourfriendshipandworkingrelationshipgoes

backalongway.Ifeelthathegetsmeandthere’sacertaineaseandcertain,Ihope,mutualrespect.

AnytimeStanleycalls,Iwouldbethere.

Whattheydidwiththeset-it’sphenomenalwhatthey’vecreated.Youreallygetthesensethatyou’re

thereinthistimeless,wonderfulenvironment.Itjustseemstobedrippingwithcreativityandintensity,

andthecomplexityofwhoandwhatthismanwas.

IhopethataudienceswillfallinloveGiacomettiandhiswork...butalsothattheytakeawaythis

understandingofwhattrueartistryisaboutandwhatartistsgothrough.Butalongsidethat,there’sa

Stanleywasreallyinvolvedwithhissubjects.Hewantstoreallyseethefeelingsgoingout.These

characters,thesepeoplewereinbadsituations,andStanleywantstoseeinsideofeverybody.Andyou

reallycanseethattherewasalotofloneliness;theywerealllivingtogetherbuttheyareallinsideof

theirownsouls.He’sreallysensitivetotheirfeelings.

Whatisreallyimportantforanactresswhenchoosingacharacteristhatshefightsagainstsomething,

andthatsheisnotthesameatthebeginningasattheend.Andthisisexactlythecharacter,andthe

realperson,ofAnnette.Shewassoinaholeinaway,butsheneverstopshoping.Shelefteverything

forGiacometti,forhimtocreate,andhegavehernothinginreturn.

ofhimwasabrilliantidea;andtheprospectofbeingintheatelierseemedlovely.Carolinemet

Giacomettiandstartedposingforhim,andIthinktheybothfellinlovewitheachother.

There’sareallybeautifulsentenceattheendofthebookIwasreading[aboutCaroline],‘LeDernier

shoeseveryday.ItwaslovelyworkingwithArmie;it’salovelycast,itreallyis.Thedynamicbetween

thetwoofthemisquitefunny.

Stanleydoesseemtowantthingstogoquitefastsoit’sgreat-itmeansyou’reinandoutofthestudio

reallyquickly.Andhe’senthusiasticwhenhehastobe,andquiteclearwhenheneedssomething

changed.Hejustfindsawaytokeepupenergylevelsonsetallthetime,whichisessentialinthisfilm,

sothatitdoesn’tbecomeaboutsomeonesittingforaportrait.He’sveryattentivetotheamountof

movementandenergyandlivelinessthatthereisonset.

Thefirstdayweenteredthestudioandsawalltheseworks,andallthedetails,itwaskindofmagical.I

thinkthere’ssomethingsoamazingaboutrecreatingthislittlepieceoftimeandspacesomewhere

completelyrandomandwhenitisfullofthecopiesofmyfavouritesculpturesever,it’sevenbetter.

Ialwaysfounditfascinatingtotryandunderstandwhathappensinsomeone’smindwhenthey’re

creating,becausereally,anartistjustinventsaworldofhisown.Andhowthatworksandcomesabout,

andwhatmakesyouanartist,Ialwaysfoundwasoneofthemostintriguing,themostfascinating

subjectstoresearchandlookat.

ALBERTOGIACOMETTIsculptor,painter,draughtsmanandprintmaker,wasbornneartheItalianborder

ofSwitzerlandin1901.Giacometti’sfather,Giovanni,wasawell-knownpost-impressionistpainterwho

instilledaninterestofartinAlbertoandhisthreesiblingsfromayoungage.Aftergraduatingfromthe

GenevaSchoolofFineArts,GiacomettimovedtoParisin1922tostudyunderAntoineBourdelleatthe

AcadémiedelaGrandeChaumière.Herehespecialisedinsurrealism,androsetosuccessquickly,

exhibitingforthefirsttimein1925.Aroundthistime,itisnotedthathebegantofindthetaskof

copyingreceivedrealityimpossiblewhichbecameakeythemeinhisworksofart.

In1927,Giacomettimovedintoastudioat46rueHippolyte-Maindron,whichwastobecomehis

permanenthome.HisbrotherDiegojoinedhimthereandbecamehisright-handman.Followinghisfirst

In1956,Giacomettiwentthroughanartisticcrisis,triggeredbyhissessionswithIsakuYanihara,a

Japanesephilosopherwhomodelledforhim.ThisperiodlastedfortwoyearsuntilGiacomettimet

YvonnePoiraudeau,theprostituteknownasCaroline.Thismarksthestartofthefinaleraof

Giacometti’slegacy,referredtoasthe‘lastportraits’.

From1958until1960Giacomettipaintednearly30portraitsofCaroline.Itwasin1964thatthe

articulatewriting,hisambitiouswereoftenmockedbyhisclassmatesandhewasexpelledfromone

boardingschool.Hecameoutasahomosexualtohisfatherwhoseresponsewastosendhimtoa

psychiatrist.In1942,LordenlistedintheUSarmyandservedintheIntelligenceUnitbeforebeing

stationedinParisafterD-day,whereaboldphonecallledLordtomeetPicassoandhisthenmistress,

DoraMaar.

Thiswasthebeginningofalong-timeacquaintancebetweenLord,PicassoandMaar.WhenLord
