::: Session: 2-Hour/Twilight Lecture ::: Session suitable for: ECE/School/OOSH/Playwork Sectors

TOPIC ONE:Working with uncertainty: the importance of risk in children’s play

Who this is aimed at:An engaging and informative 2-hour session specifically designed to support people who have responsibility for children and play including those working in ECE, School, OOSH, and Playwork sectors.

What it is about:This session is about the topic of risk and how we, as educators, deal with balancing the need for our children to be able to play in the way that best suits their needs while still addressing the apprehensions we may have over health, safety and welfare. It will explore the concerns we might have over allowing for more risk in our centre’s and answer the most common questions educators raise.

Specifically the session covers:.: Why we feel uncomfortable with some of the riskier elements of children’s play.: Why children of all ages enjoy risky play and seek out uncertainty.: How we can provide help and support to worried staff and parents.: Address what practices will best support children playing with uncertainty.: Consider Risk Benefit Analysis as an alternative to Risk Assessment

How do we do it:The lecture is organised around a series of interactive experiences, presentations with photographs and examples of children playing with risk and uncertainty.

::: Session: Full Day Seminar::: Session suitable for: ECE/School/OOSH/Playwork Sectors

TOPIC TWO: Managing risk in children’s play provisionWho this is aimed at:An engaging and informative full day seminar specifically designed to support people who have responsibility for children and play including those working in ECE, School, OOSH, and Playwork sectors.

What it is about:This very practical session aims to explore our attitudes and previous experiences towards risk in play. Using small group discussions and whole group presentations this session will detail the physiological, emotional and social effects and benefits that children generate while playing with risk and uncertainty. It tackles head on the barriers that exist and cause us concern over allowing more risky play and will enable the participants to adopt a Dynamic Risk Benefit approach to working with children and young people rather than the more commonly used Risk Assessment.

Specifically the session covers:.: How to develop the skills and understanding required to manage risk and uncertainty in a play-centric way.: How to support fellow educators and develop appropriate risk management policy and procedures.: How to advocate effectively for children’s opportunities to play with risk.: How to use Dynamic Risk Benefit Analysis in place of Risk Assessments

How do we do it:The day is organised around a series of interactive experiences, presentations with photographs and examples of children playing with risk and uncertainty. It develops this into a number of questions to explore in small group discussions. By the end of the day participants will have an understanding of the issues and practice of supporting children and young people in their riskier play and how to apply a dynamic Risk Benefit Analysis in their own workplace.
