Clare is a Deputy Public Defender in the 15th Judicial District and graduated from LSU Law in 2014. She is a Gideon’s

Promise Fellow in the class of 2017. She is part of the Miller Team and a Felony Trial Defender.

Caitlyn is a graduate of San Francisco Law School and a Gideon’s Promise Fellow in the Class of 2016. She is part of the full

time felony team in Acadia Parish, and also part of the Miller Team in the 15th Judicial District.

10:00 - 11:15 a.m. Alternatives to Mass Incarceration, Rob Reardon, LPSO Director of Corrections - 1.25 CLE

Rob is Director of Corrections for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. A career in Corrections has helped Rob establish job

training and rehabilitation programs for Acadiana. Data on who is locked up and why, the costs related to that,

implications of mental health and what we might do better are included in Rob’s resume.

12:30 - 2:00 p.m. Recent Developments, G. Paul Marx - 1.5 CLE

Long ago in 1980, LSU Law gave G. Paul Marx a Law Degree, and shortly after his swearing in he opened his first file: an

appointed case. That’s been the deal for 36 years, including working as a contract defender, an Appellate Lawyer for

Capital and Felony cases, and now as District Defender in the 15th.

2:15 - 3:30 p.m. Complications in DOC Calculations of Time Served, Chad Ikerd - 1.25 CLE

Chad is a 2011 graduate of LSU Law School and before that worked as manager of a housing program in post Katrina

Louisiana. He is First Assistant Defender in the 15th Judicial District.

3:30 - 5:00 p.m. Ethics for Criminal Defense Lawyers, Leslie Schiff - 1.5 CLE

Leslie is a veteran litigator including years in the Disciplinary Administrative Process of the Louisiana Bar. As such, he can

explain what to do when the disconcerting letter from the Disciplinary Counsels’ office arrives and particularly how that

impacts Criminal Defense Counsel.

Chaz is an LSU Law Graduate in Private Practice, focused on DWI Defense and Personal Injury. He is contract counsel for

the 15th Judicial District Defender in District DWI Court.

9:30 - 10:45 a.m. Getting in Touch with DOC Clients, Keith Nordyke - 1.25 CLE

Keith is a Baton Rouge attorney in private practice focused on Post Conviction work, and as such has numerous clients in

DOC custody. He has some very practical detail on how to communicate with folks in lockup. There is internet

communication, proper planning and even dress code issues for you to be aware of.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Gwen’s Law: Did Anything Change in 2015? Leo Costales - 1.0 CLE

Leo is a Gideon’s Fellow in the class of 2017. A graduate of Vanderbilt Law School, Leo grew up in the Houston area and

now works in the 15th Judicial District as a Team Member on the Pre-Indictment Team and in the felony drug court. One

of the challenges that practice has brought is “Gwen’s Law”. It’s been revised. So what?

1:15 - 2:45 p.m. Professionalism: How to Deal with Clients & Authority in a Dustup, William “Billy” King & Eric McClendon - 1.5 CLE

Billy is with the State Bar’s “Practice Assistance” program, which is a mediation type program in the nature of a diversion

from any disciplinary procedures.

Eric is an attorney with Disciplinary Counsel, who reviews initial complaints. Their focus for us will be how you should

approach the process for the most beneficial outcome for all concerned.

2:45 - 4:00 p.m. Marijuana Sentencing: How to Apply New Provisions, Natasha George - 1.25 CLE

Natasha graduated from LSU Law in 2011 and joined the 15th Judicial District in July 2015 as full time felony counsel in

Vermilion Parish. Her first big challenge has been getting proper application of the reduced penalties for Marijuana, and so

she has some motions to show us and a view of the law that is critical.
