Masterpreneur Season 2

Hasina Kharbih, Winner - Masterpreneur Season 1

“No matter how great an idea may be, or how high a vision is set, it matters only when the idea is capable of creating a social impact and drives a positive change in the lives of people. Entrepreneurs who are focused not only on taking their enterprises higher but are also committed to be the driving force behind social change, such individuals are the ones that emerge as true Masterpreneurs, the torchbearers of entrepreneurial spirit and the face of empowered India.

After a successful debut in 2013, Masterpreneur was back with its second season in 2014. It was another six months of hard work and preparation that culminated in selecting the second round of winners in December 2014. This season, we were looking for business talents that are fuelling growth in the economy; such entrepreneurs who have not only dared to dream big, but also had the resolve to transform their dreams into reality.”

Sanjay Pugalia, Editor-in-Chief, CNBC-AWAAZ

Last year, my experience at Master-preneur was quite humbling. As a host and an observer, I had the op-portunity to interact with 50 inspir-ing entrepreneurs and meet people who had taken the plunge ‘to do or die’ by setting up a business them-selves. Many were without much help from the formal avenues of VC’s and angel investors. But, most who had come had done so with an

intention to bring about a social change and with the drive to excel in their fields.

At the end of the first season, I could not wait to take the event forward into the next season. And this year, I feel honoured to be as-sociated with yet another exciting chapter of Masterpreneur India Awards, a platform that provides the small Indian entrepreneur an opportunity to not only showcase his talent, but also to be mentored and eventually be funded by industry leaders.

This season, the focus was towards socially-responsible enter-prises, and a new category of award was introduced – ‘Social Entre-

preneur’ for businesses that serve the weaker sections of the society and empower them to become self-reliant.

If numbers are anything to go by, the scale of response we re-ceived this season testifies the fact that India has moved a step ahead towards innovation and entrepreneurial excellence. The response this year was tremendous – over 1800 applications, more than double of what we received last season. Beyond numbers, the overwhelming response to our initiative only demonstrates the vigour and spirit of entrepreneurial talent in our country and its emerging business land-scape. And these applicants came from all over India, were not merely confined to the metro cities, but were from small towns like Yamuna Nagar, Varanasi and the likes. The entries were filtered across five zones, where 23 semi-finalists were further shortlisted to six final-ists, who competed for the prestigious title at the grand finale held in Mumbai.

Masterpreneur has not only been instrumental in recognizing the true trailblazers but has also helped foster an entrepreneurial ecosys-tem that will help nurture, sustain and transform emerging business-es into engines of India’s economic growth, going ahead.

A path-breaking initiative in identifying and helping emerging com-panies and their tough-minded leaders, Masterpreneur India -Season 2 began with a bang and targeted early-stage businesses, helping en-trepreneurs reach the next level and emerge as true champions in this ‘commerce oriented’ world.

Our aim, this season, was to introduce innovative businesses that were not easy to duplicate, and give them an opportunity to get men-tored and raise the necessary funds to fuel growth.

We introduced rising entrepreneurial stars to venture capital firms and initiated an interaction between them beyond the "pitch" process. Exchange of ideas with highly accomplished industry stal-warts gave them an opportunity to explore different areas of growth.

As all good things come to an end, so did Mastepreneur Season 2 but not without identifying the true champion of this season, who not only has the grit and determination to achieve his dreams, but also the strength of character to inspire others. On a personal note, I am looking forward to work with the entrepreneurs that participated this season and help them take their business to the next level.

Sunjay Kapur, Vice Chairman & Managing Director,Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd

Villgro came on board as the Funding and Incuba-tion partner for the so-cial enterprise category, this second season of Masterpreneur.

After initial discus-sions with the show’s producers, we agreed to establish a separate so-cial enterprise category, given that social enter-prises have different fac-tors to consider in their business (social returns often rate higher than

monetary returns) and, therefore, need to be evaluated differently. We also agreed to change the criteria for application to account for the fact that social enterprises grow more slowly and require longer lead times to become sustainable.

Our involvement at the application stage also included promoting the show and the platform within our networks to garner more ap-plications and to give Villgro incubatees the chance to showcase their work on a bigger platform.

While the show received over 1800 applications, the number of social enterprise applications constituted only a small percent-age. However, while the numbers were small, we were relieved to see the quality of social entrepreneurship. After some hectic evalu-ation of the applications, we were excited to participate in the zonal rounds of selection with Sona Koyo, Innovation Alchemy and other jury members.

The format of pitches was changed this year - entrepreneurs were required to pitch only for a couple of minutes followed by a longer Q&A session. This allowed for better interaction between the

judges and contestants. We were happy to see some great businesses and in several cities took more people to the semifinals than originally planned. These were long days of listening to pitches but the experi-ence was enriched by the growing camaraderie with staff and other partners of the show.

At the semifinals in Delhi, interactions were much more engaging after a day of workshops. It was good to see entrepreneurs in action outside the confines of a boardroom or official meeting. By the time the six finalists pitched at the Masterpreneur final in Mumbai, they had honed their ideas and words even further, to deliver smooth and focussed presentations to a high-profile jury.

Small entrepreneurs rarely get this kind of exposure or platform to showcase their business. There are some truly inspiring and smart ideas out in the world that deserve the chance to be translated into successful business models. However, often such ideas die out early due to lack of proper guidance, resources and insights. Masterpre-neur offers these connections as well.

For Villgro, it was a special opportunity to take our work to a national stage and reach out to entrepreneurs across India. We are committed to building the social enterprise movement in India by strengthening the ecosystem and helping entrepreneurs build their businesses. Through Masterpreneur, we were able to take one step further in this journey.

And finally, the awarding of the Masterpreneur-Season 2 title marked the culmination of months of effort by our team and other jury members.

Villgro stands committed to incubate the winning company and to provide Rs 10 lakh in seed funding. We look forward to working with the winner, and with the entire Masterpreneur team to help grow this movement.

Ncubate has been happy to be on board as part of the jury panel for Masterpreneur Season 2. It has been an enriching journey for us, giv-ing us a pulse of the entrepreneurial spirit across different parts of the country. We would be happy to take this direction forward in shaping the dreams of entrepreneurs, who have moved ahead on their way to make a difference.

Masterpreneur Season 2 was filled up with lots of energy and en-thusiasm, getting across with some of the country’s brightest entre-preneurs and their passionate success stories. Masterpreneur is one of those avenues that can go a long way in enabling and empowering small and medium entrepreneurs in their pursuit of making a differ-ence in the way we live. I believe it is a platform that celebrates the spirit of entrepreneurship. For all those who have ventured forth on an unconventional path setting aside jobs and starting up after identi-fying pain points / gaps in the existing marketplace and trying to solve local problems, a program like Masterpreneur salutes their mindset and pursuits. It also inspires and motivates all those who are on the cusp of starting their ventures to go ahead and grab the opportunity without waiting any longer.

Through the five zonal rounds, we witnessed a wide gamut of entrepreneurs from across the country, who held a deep passion for their dreams and unique value propositions to offer – some very clear of what they intend to do and how they would go about it while some navigating their ways through that understanding. It was a mixed bag of innovative ventures with product and service businesses and busi-ness model innovations spreading across multiple ventures. A healthy mix of entrepreneurs under the general and social category clearly brings out the opportunity that the Indian semi-urban and rural mar-kets present to modern-day entrepreneurs.

We look forward to mentoring the four enterprises which have been selected from the semifinal rounds in giving shape to their en-trepreneurial pursuits.

It was interesting to participate as part of the jury panel for the Semi-final rounds of Masterpreneur Season 2. I believe that platforms such as Masterpreneur provide a great opportunity for young budding entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas/ventures and get first-hand feedback on their direction and pursuits. From my brief engagement with the ventures, I gather that the impact of the Masterpreneur plat-form would come out from the success stories which these ventures create for themselves. Hence, timely follow-through with the entre-preneurs on their direction for growth would be really important for the overall process. Since these entrepreneurs come from varied cul-tural backgrounds looking to solve varied nature of local problems, they stand at different stages of their entrepreneurial journeys, and if mentored well can be converted into sustainable enterprises. I con-gratulate all entrepreneurs who participated at Masterpreneur Sea-son 2 and wish them all success in their ventures.

Building Entrepreneurial Ecosystems What It Takes To Make The Cut

Our Team at Innovation Alchemy feels privileged to have had the op-portunity to partner with CNBC-AWAAZ and the Sona Koyo Group as Knowledge Partners for the 2014 Season of the Masterpreneur platform.

As I look back at Season 2 of the Masterpreneur, I am amazed at how the three winners so wonderfully reflect the characteristics of the new world of Indian entrepreneurs!

All three of them exemplify focused, ambitious, technology savvy, socially conscious and business minded entrepreneurs who will define the future of Small and Medium Business Enterprise in India, going ahead. And it’s very fitting that they should have found recognition through the Masterpreneur platform in 2014.

Selecting them from over 1800 entries from across India required a deep and transparent process of assessment, assimilation and elimination. A shortlist of 75 entrepreneurs met a jury panel to make personal pitches for their business ideas and innovations, across five cities in India. Each of these interactions was an opportunity to really understand the nature of ideas and people who make up the SME space in the five major regions of the country. Some excellent socially relevant enterprises fought for the top position against more traditional profit making business enterprises. And in the end a combination of these won.

We talk a lot about corporate social responsibility these days, because it is now a rule in the Company’s Act. But I feel that if we look beyond the definition of the rule – the real essence of the idea is for large busi-nesses and successful entrepreneurs to support others in the ecosystem who have the potential to contribute to the country’s progress, through enterprise & innovation. Especially support those who may not necessar-ily have the money, funds, visibility or the management skills to do it alone.

Through the Masterpreneur platform, I believe Sona Koyo, and Sunjay Kapur in particular have really committed to helping a whole new batch of entrepreneurs who can leverage the might of Sona Koyo, both in terms of market, opportunity and mentorship. In addition, having multi-ple independent investors on the jury panel has enabled more than just the winners to get access to serious investment – creating an opportunity for growth capital infusion for their companies.

We look forward to working with the winners and many of the final-ists through a longer engagement of acceleration over the coming year. And soon, it will be time for Season 3 of this successful platform to call for applications again!

One Step Away

After sifting through scores of applications received and holding extensive interactive sessions across the five Pre-defined zones, the jury announced the 23 semi-finalists of Masterpreneur Season 2.

These 23 aspirants belong to different backgrounds and have set out to establish themselves in a variety of industries – ranging from education, training, travel, food services, human resource development and more. Season 2 also brought to the fore some interesting and innovative concepts such as cooking as a medium to build team skills; turning scraps to affordable IT solutions; digital media business, drone manufacturing and multi-purpose food processing machine.

The semi-final event was a two-day long affair, where the selected participants had the opportunity to gain mentoring from experienced industry maestros and learn from their experiences as well as their challenges and struggles, and how they could turn their own disadvantages into plus points.

Workshops were also conducted that helped participants gain insights as to how they could take their businesses off the ground, set new standards and explore better ways of doing business.

On the first day, participants were given two simulated tasks to complete. Contestants were judged on the basis of their task performance and delivery.

The first activity was a group assignment crafted to test core capabilities of the participants. Six teams representing residents of a virtual society were required to devise zero-waste management solutions and ways of tapping investments for the same. The jury selected the winning team, based on an assessment of the strategies proposed and its execution plan.

The second activity was conducted in pairs, and each of the teams was provided with certain unique resources. The challenge was to convert these limited resources into interesting business opportunities. Three of the most novel business ideas, then pitched their ideas to the judges (playing as venture funders), and a winner was chosen.

Masterpreneur of the Year

Mukund BS ReNew IT

ViSiOn:

the company’s vision is to make computers available to everyone. In order to make it more digitally inclusive, India needs more than 600 million computers that are not only available for usage but are also affordable and in working condition. RenewIt aims to fill this gap.

This generation is more high tech than ever before. Everyone knows about computers but very few Indians have the privilege of using one. A closer look at the Census 2011 data shows that India has an IT penetration of 9.5% at a household level. Less than one in every 10 households has a computer, and this despite India being renowned for its $100 billion IT industry. There can be a dramatic transformation across all strata of our society if IT penetration in the country reaches 30% like China or 45% like Brazil. It would create a new generation of icons like Narayana Murthy, Azim Premji or Satya Nadella, and

chances are bright these new heroes would bring to the fore some groundbreaking ideas on the likes of Google or Facebook. Millions of employment opportunities would be created and the Indian economic growth would sky rocket!

ReNew IT believes that a tech-savvy generation can be a key catalyst for transforming India from a developing nation to a developed economy. This can be achieved by providing high-quality, low-cost computers to the Indian masses. We aim at creating entrepreneurs in small town and villages – these aspirants who run their own cyber-cafes can become IT resellers and provide AMC services locally or even run IT training institutions. These entrepreneurs would not only have the advantage of working locally in small towns or even villages instead of migrating to urban India but also be highly respected in their native places as the facilitators of spreading computers and computer knowledge in every corner of Bharat.

At the heart of the digital divide between “India” and “Bharat” is the issue of affordability. The primary reason behind the rapid penetration of mobile phones in all parts of the country is the availability of low cost phones. These phones have transformed the lives millions of Indians. But tablets or phones cannot give all the skills required to get jobs in the new age economy.

Most of the higher paying jobs today require some amount of

The Masterpreneur of Season 2

computer skills. Technology has matured to such an extent that even 7-8 year old computers have enough computing horse-power for most of the day-to-day applications like emailing, web browsing, viewing multimedia videos or animations, office work like tally, excel sheets etc. Computers unlike mobiles, have no low-cost options unfortunately. A new computer costs around Rs. 20,000/- which is beyond the reach of a vast majority of Indians. ReNew IT is trying to address this gap by providing computers from as low as Rs 4,500/-. These computers not only contain the hardware but also genuine Windows licenses on them.

ReNew IT buys old computers from large organizations and upgrade to the latest technology. These computers are refurbished in our state-of-the-art facility near Electronics City at Bangalore after wiping all the data using a ‘Department of Defence’ compliant software. As an ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified organization, ReNew IT ensures that all computers are passed through their standardized, stringent testing procedures. Only the best computers which pass all the processes are marketed to schools, students, small offices and millions of Indians, who have never had a computer.

Qualified and educated citizens are primary building blocks of a strong economy. In a country like India, there’s a huge disparity between the level of education resulting in lack of opportunities for some and abundant opportunities for others. There are 23 crore children enrolled in 13 lakh schools across the country. Unfortunately, places where teachers are needed the most have the least access to good quality teaching. Time and again, research studies have shown that rural students receive very poor quality of education. Many 5th standard kids are unable to read a 2nd standard book or do two-digit subtraction problems.

Computersinschools.org is a CSR initiative by ReNew IT that aims to reduce the disparity by empowering rural and low income schools with ICT so as to create equal opportunities for the future citizens of India. There are many large organizations which dispose thousands of computers every year. These computers, which have negligible value on the books of the large organizations, hold the passport to a better future for millions of students across the country. When combined with an internet connection, these computers can open up a whole world of possibilities. ReNew IT is working with the CSR programs of many large organizations in bridging the digital divide in India, thereby creating a brighter future for millions of India.

iMPact:» ReNew IT has supplied computers to many rural and government

schools whose students are now using computers for the first time.

» Many parents have now been able to buy computers for their children to give them a better chance to their dream jobs

» The company has created many micro-entrepreneurs, who sell computers, provide AMC and after sales support

» ReNew IT has also been working closely with many NGOs to help make India a better place. AMBA, an NGO which trains mentally challenged community to do data entry work. Because of the low cost laptops provided by ReNew IT, AMBA has been able to train over 100s of mentally challenged who now earn a livelihood through dignity.

He is keen to enhance learning through technology in education to bridge the digital divide in rural and government schools through the computersinschools.org program.

“Since inception, ReNew IT has sold more than 10,000 computers impacting over 50,000 Indians. By doing this, we have broadly accomplished two aspects – providing access to the economically weaker sections of society to buy their first computer, and preventing premature disposal of computers, thereby conserving natural resources.”
