EPM Cloud - Can the Capacity of an EPM Cloud Service be Increased?
By: Tanya Heise | Sr Principal Technical Support Engineer
This question has been asked by our EPM Cloud customers a bit more frequently.
Kash Mohammadi, VP of EPM Cloud, provides the following information when it comes to this topic.
• EPM Cloud is architected for elastic scalability.
• The likely reason for most performance issues is application design, not memory or compute
resources.
• Application design inefficiencies can be identified by reviewing the Application Activity Report.
If you have a significant performance issue and have exhausted application design related avenues,
please contact Oracle support and we will investigate the root cause of the issue. Please specify in the
SR what exact operation is not meeting your performance requirements and what is the expected
performance.

To help identify opportunities to improve application efficiency PBCS offers a few tools to
customers when it comes to troubleshooting various cloud issues and knowing how their
systems are being used:
• Application Monitor or “Application Diagnostics”
• Activity Reports
• Migration Reports
• Instance Reports
• EPM Automate
• Snapshot Recovery
Troubleshooting Overview

Found in the Navigation Menu under “Application Diagnostics” you can
use the application monitor to
analyze the following:
• Block storage cubes
• Dimensions
• Simple forms
• Standalone business rules
• Approval unit hierarchies
• Reporting mappings
• Export data functionality

• Application Monitor also
provides traffic lighted object
feedback for each of the
artifacts.
• In some cases it will note why
an artifact might be red.
• Clicking on ”View Details”
shows more information.

Found in the Navigation Menu > Overview there is a tab for “Activity Reports” you can use
the activity reports to see a variety of useful information for up to 60 days prior.

The EPM Automate Utility is used to automate tasks in PBCS.
• The tool returns an exit code and message to indicate the status of the
operation.
• Exit codes are grouped under five code numbers; each code may
indicate many error conditions.
• Review the message returned with the code to identify the specific
condition that caused the error.
• Log files that capture the code output are created on the computer
from which you run the utility.
• Oracle documents the codes and their meaning, which can be found
on their documentation portal, EPM Automate Codes.

If the database fails for some reason, you can use the artifact snapshots
to restore the database’s contents to the previous day or to a previously
known state.
To recover a snapshot, run EPM automate commands to complete these steps:
• Sign in to the target environment using admin credentials:
• Re-create the environment.
• Delete Artifact Snapshot if it is present.
• Copy snapshot Artifact Snapshot from the local file system to the target
environment.
• Import artifacts from Artifact Snapshot into the environment and create new
users in the identity domain.
• Sign out.

Metadata / Data Loads…
• If the cubes listed in the import file do not match the cube names in the
application, the application will ignore unrecognized cube columns.
• If any import errors occur during an Essbase data load, the import will quit and
no data will be loaded.
• If data is exported to a file in Planning format, you can use a text editor to
change the database name in the file; for example, ASOCube, and then
import the data file into the aggregate storage outline (provided all dimensions
exist in the aggregate storage outline.)
• There are special characters that will cause failures in metadata and data
loads. For a list of supported delimiter characters and exceptions, see Other
Supported Delimiter Characters.

Application Migration…
• If you get an error that says no data sources are available, then an application
already exits in Oracle Planning and Budgeting Cloud. Delete the existing
application and try the migration again.
General…
• Many reports in PBCS, like every report, record time as UTC or Greenwich
Mean Time and not Eastern Daylight Saving Time
• Use a support browser! When using Oracle EPBCS, PBCS or FCCS, you may
encounter errors if you are not using a compatible web browser.
