“ELECTRONIC NOSE”PRESENTED BY
S.VENKTESWARLU
Over the last decade, "electronic sensing" or “E-sensing" technologies have undergone important developments from a technical and commercial point of view
The First idea for E- sensing comes on 1914 Since 1982 research has been conducted to
develop E-sensing technologies
History
Different existing gas detection methods such as
Gas chromatography (GC) Mass spectrometry (MS) GC-MS Method Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) etc
GAS DETECTION METHODS
5 Human Senses
Human Senses were replaced by E-senses such as
EYE-------> Camera Hear------> Microphone Touch-----> Thermometer Taste -----> E-Tongue Smell-----> E-Nose
E-sensing Replacements
Human olfactory systems have large numbers of organs in the (10 Millions for humans, 100 Millions dog).
There are 1000 different organs (We smell in 1000 different “odor”).
Working
Works on non seperative mechanism Each odour has its unique identification as
same as finger print No two odours have same properties By this we can analyze the flavour
Principle
The major three components of E-nose are
1. Sampling Deliver system 2.Detection System 3.Computing system
Major Components
The sample delivery system enables the generation of the volatile compounds
The system then injects this headspace into the detection system of the electronic nose.
Sampling Deliver System
It consists of a sensor set to react It is the "reactive" part of the instrument The sensors react when odour detects which means the sensors experience a
change of electrical properties.
The detection system
Here MOSFET used to amplify the signals Change in odour leads to change in sensor
electrical property (either positive or negative)
This change directly given to the MOSFET to amplify the signal
For weak signals (low concentrated signals)
It is used to match the recognised pattern with predefined patterns and give appropriate results
Computing System
Applications
A few applications of E-Nose are
Medical Diagnostics Food Processing Industries Explosive Detection Chemical Research Laboratories Quality Control Laboratories etc
Applications
Some types of Cancer detection such as lung cancer
Harmful Bacteria detection
Future applications
High cost Low range application area
Complex city in matching odour patterns
Challenges with current E-Nose
E-Nose is one of the major invention which can capable to sense the human senses
It can help the modern world to solve many problems and save more valuable lives.
This is not a device which completely replace the human sense but most of cases it is possible.
Conclusion
