Presented by Souha Aranout Facilitator: Teaching English As a Second Language
What is Communicative Language Teaching Strategy?
The Communicative approach emphasizes the ability to communicate the message in terms of its meaning, instead of concentrating exclusively on grammatical perfection or phonetics.
Goal of Communicative Approach
Communicative Language Teaching is a natural follow-on from the reaction during the 70s against previous methods which over-focused on teaching grammatical structures and template sentences, and which gave little or no importance to how language is actually used practically
History of Communicative Approach
1) Focus on meaning. 2) Communicative competence is the desired goal. 3) Learner-centered. 4) Fluency is the primary goal. 5) Students are expected to interact with other people,
either in oral practice. 6) Dialogues, if used, center around communicative
functions. 7) Intrinsic motivation will spring from an interest in
what is being communicated by the language. 8) Task-based.
Features and Principles of Strategy
Communication in the classroom is achieved by creating real-life situations. Task-based activities are developed to ensure that communication takes place between the learners.
Intended Learning Goals
Understanding occurs through active student interaction.
Teaching occurs by using authentic English texts. Students not only learn the second language but they
also learn strategies for understanding Importance is given to learners’ personal
experiences and situations, which are considered as an invaluable contribution to the content of the lessons
Using the new language in unrehearsed contexts creates learning opportunities outside the classroom
